Bye Bye Censorship: Is Facebook the New Myspace Now that Social Media is on the Blockchain!?

in steemit •  8 years ago

It seems blocktrepreneurship is not limited to FinTech now that Steemit.com has leveraged the blockchain to create a mutant Facebook/Reddit hybrid that boasts the ability to compensate content providers (i.e., writers) while protecting freedom of speech. But is Facebook becoming MySpace? Will Steemit.com supplant Facebook? Probably not, at least probably not soon. So far others like Diaspora, Minds, etc. have played a subpar David to Facebook's Goliath but putting it on the blockchain does provide a certain advantage; transparency and compensation for content providers. But are transparency and compensation enough of an incentive to create a Great Migration from Facebook to Steemit? Well, I don't know but I like the idea enough to encourage it. Do you?

great post! i agree with you!

Thank you :)

Although the Steem blockchain is decentralised, the Steemit website is unfortunately not. That means Steemit could be forced to not publish certain things that are in the blockchain. Another site could decide to publish all, but then they in turn will receive court orders or whatever. You end up with a game of whack-a-mole like the music industry is currently fighting against Bittorrent sites.

Good to know, thanks for the thoughtful reply!

This is a nice synopsis and an interesting idea. Signed up because of this and will give it a shot.

Thx!

I like that it is not full of ads and the seemingly less likely event of censorship happening is just as cool as the compensation! So yes I do agree.

:)

Oh, this is the post on fb after which I had to look into this whole steemit thing, and joined! Thank you for writing it. (Was it in RAW Fans group? I couldn't find it later).

Hm, Discordian Libertarians on FB? I may have posted to some other RAW groups, not sure... ;)

It is possible it was a repost. Or maybe even facebook suggesting me a post based on a like. Anyhow, thank you for writing it, that got me on board!
