Less Than 10 Days Until SteemFest Hackathon - Help Me Decide What Should I Work On

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

I'm really looking forward to SteemFest Hackathon, in Lisbon. There are less than 10 days until I'll join some of the most interesting programmers in the graphene ecosystem (Steemit, Bitshares and Decent).

The only thing that bothers me is that I don't have (yet) a clear idea about what I should be working on. Not because I'm lacking ideas, but because I need feedback from potential users. I can code pretty much everything, but this everything will be worthless if's not used by real people, in real life.

So I thought to make a small questionnaire among my followers. It's not guaranteed that I will pick your suggestion, but it will greatly help me gauge my efforts and prioritize.

Steemit Apps

  • obviously, there is steem.supply. One way to develop this further is to turn it into a fully fledged mobile app, based on react native.
  • I'm also thinking of polishing my PHP Steem Tools package. Adding a few examples of what it can be built with, or perhaps a WordPress integration?
  • I'm fancying the idea of creating a desktop app for Steem, also based on react native and electron. The drawback to this is that I have no code yet written, not a single line.

Bitshares App

  • as many of you know, I deployed an asset of the Bitshares blockchain: RUNCOIN, a token rewarding runners. I am still pondering if I should follow the Bitshares route, in which case I should start working on an integration with Strava (for starters) or if I should wait for SMT. I'm 95% sure that SMT will be a better platform for RUNCOIN, but, until it's released, it could be an interesting exercise to start coding anyway. I may even build it with some sort of a "driver" as a storage, making it portable (from Bitshares to Steemit, in this case).

Decent App

  • I have a very basic idea about how Decent works so far, all I know is that it is based on the same grapehene technology (I think it's actually a Steem-based environment). It would certainly be interesting to port to Decent some of the stuff I've been already working on for Steem (steem.supply or the PHP Steem Tools package) but the learning curve can be a little bit problematic, especially because the time is so short, the app is still very young and the documentation is relatively scarce.

So, what should it be? Let the flood of comments begin :)

I think the thing that you mentioned that is going to have the biggest long-term impact on the community would be the PHP Steem Tools package as it's something that would help other developers bring their ideas to life faster and easier. In that sense, making something for other developers to use has a multiplier effect and thus larger impact (if gaining traction of course).

The WordPress integration might be an interesting idea, especially if it is a step towards a tool that would make implementing SMTs on WordPress websites (or am I vastly missing the way they are going to work?).

As a third option, I would not mind a Steem.Supply Android app and I would surely install it, but I don't think it's something that's really needed. Why put in the effort of making and supporting a whole app when your tool works fine on mobile from the browser. Still, an app with a widget to put on your mobile desktop or lock-screen might be pretty cool, but I doubt it will have huge utility over the website. If you want to have an improvement for mobile, I think you should just improve the responsiveness, that's all.

If you feel like working on Steem.Supply for the hackathon, I think you should consider adding functions it doesn't yet have that people might have asked for in the past. Something I would add might be breaking down the reward for each article into how much the person is getting from each vote and how much exactly is each vote expected to be worth. You could also add monetary values to the Social Insights part.

Good luck on the hackathong and have fun at the event! :)

Thanks for the suggestions, appreciate them all :)

And I appreciate your work and I'm sure so do others :)

I would bet on Runcoin running under SMT instead, I think steem is the proper blockchain for sportive social activities.
Keep working for the community.
Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion :)

Up until now no one mentioned a blockchain explorer?
The only legit one is steemd.com.
netuoso's and followbtcnews' are completely not legit.
steemdb.com is about half legit.
The problem with steemd is the frequent downtime of its server.
Solve this problem and steemd.com is so good it makes me wonder why does it not replace the lousy steemit.com and busy.org as complete interface?

How about an app or tool that allows us to keep our Favorite Friends listed for easy access. Its so easy to lose track of people here.

This would probably be the "communities" feature developed by Steemit INC.

Dragos, I would of course like you to figure out how we can edit posts older than a week. Give me that app, and you will be my hero for life!

😄😇😄

@creatr

The only way to do that is to republish the old story in the form of the newly edited one. It's a blockchain limitation. It can be mitigated at the UI level, but it would be overkill. There is much more effort needed for this one, sorry :)

That is the way all Steemit edits are done, even during the allowed one-week payout period.

I've been haranguing the developers to fix the UI for many, many months now. I have been told that the core code will allow it, but the UI is not up to speed. So far, I've only gotten excuses.

I guess I am just going to have to give up and figure out how to do it myself... ;)

I'm fancying the idea of creating a desktop app for Steem, also based on react native and electron. The drawback to this is that I have no code yet written, not a single line.

Saw a basic version of this on the trending page yesterday. esteem also has a desktop version: https://steemit.com/esteem/@good-karma/esteem-announce-release-of-desktop-app

If I were to vote on the ideas mentioned in your post, I would vote on polishing the PHP library. However, I'm not sure how well this would fare with other projects at the hackathon.

That ink is 10 months old... :) Thanks for the suggestions, appreciate it!

This is at the blockchain level, and it should require a hardfork. Too much work for a hacktahon.

And what do you think About the idea?

It's interesting at the first sight but I have to give it more thinking.

I hope tou would think About it And reply in the comments of my post. I think this system is perfect for removing old whale votes for inactive users. And i guess all witnesses in top 20 are prepared to the top positions. Now Its more a set And forget.

I would really like an add-in that pings every time one of my favourite authors publishes a post. One that allows me to specify which authors are included. And ideally one that allows me to separate these authors between the different tags / communities that I follow (a separate sub-box for fiction authors / for bisteemit posters etc). And once it pings has a comment that says @dragosroua published a post X minutes ago. And has the amount of current post payout.

I know that's basically the "feed". But a really condensed version. Essentially allowing me to follow my favourites more closely. And pinging so I don't keep missing things! And so that I'm up there right away for comments. And which would aid with manual curation.

I can't believe it doesn't exist already. Perhaps it does?

I think the "communities" feature, developed at the blockchain level, will solve may of your problems. No ETA for that, but they're working on it.

You can use Steem Watch to track various events that http://steemwatch.com/

wow fantastic ideas, i would love to see steem.supply as an mobile app because i am not always present on computer and mostly use android phone so it would be great if we see steem.supply developed as an mobile app.

When will you arrive in Lisbon? I will be there from this Friday until Monday and unfortunately I really have to go back on monday..

31st evening.

I would love a mobile app for steemit or busy.org or whatever so I can see content from the blockchain on my mobile devices, without using browsers.

There is such an app already - eSteem, you might want to check it out.

When I searched for an app a while ago, all I could find where kind of dubious apps so I didn't even try them.

eSteem is rock solid, I use it too. Code is open source, also.

Thanks for the info guys

Yep, not dubious at all, you can download it and try it without worry. I personally don't use it too much, but I'm still happy it's there!

I'd love to see some new features added to steem.supply! It is a very useful tool so whether you work on a mobile app or enhance the web application I am sure a lot of people will find it valuable. I voted you as a witness after using it so I hope you'll keep working on it.

If WordPress can be integrated into steemit, then i go for Steem App.

Good luck as you start your project.

I'd totally download/use an android version of Steem.supply!! especially if it had Notification feature that tell you "You've just got XX SBD".

@dragosroua - there is one clear winner for the hackathon - RUNCOIN.

You want to do something different, innovative, exciting with huge potential. RUNCOIN is all that and more.

I would look at RUNCOIN and see if it could be built to hook into any platform STEEM, BitShares, whatever (I don't really know what I'm talking about here)

Why wait for something that may not be what you want it to be? Why wait on someone else's dream to live your own dream? Why follow when you can lead?

I truely think the RUNCION has legs (that's the best pun I could come up with, sorry). It could be a game changer.

The trick is how to implement it so that it works. If you can make it plateform agnostic, with hooks into Strava, Fitbit, Garmin etc as well as exchanges like Bittrix, Poloniex etc.

Or make it so it has its own wallet.

This is something that could really excite regular people, not just a small group of developers what make themes for WordPress (or similar).

And of course, the potential for other Excercies coins is huge.

Look at the wearable tracker market today and just imagine what that would look like if people were getting paid to reach their daily step goal.

You are sitting on a billion dollar gold mine with RUNCOIN, and I'd love to see you profit from that. ;-)

So that's my suggestion. Whichever way you decide to go, have fun at the Hackathon. That's what it's all about after all.

I am a girl and I go with the names, so Decent sounds great for me :P

Decent sounds at least decent to me :)

Good one, mate! :D

Thanks, I couldn't resist:)) hope Teodora doesn't mind!

I don't :D I like irony is good for healing the importance of the self :D Humour is one of the best and juicy things around here

I'm glad that you don't mind :D You guys are making this community great!

Very well said ;)

I hope not, too, it seemed to me like she was being whimsical too anyway :)
