May 30 Days Writing Challenge - Day Nine: Where Do You See Steemit In 5 Years?

in steemit •  7 years ago

Welcome to the ninth day of the May 30 days writing challenge. If you don't know what this challenge is about, please have a look at the introductory post. Also, at the end of each article I will post the links to all the posts in the challenge (if you're joining the challenge, I encourage you to do the same). Also, if you join, don't forget to tag your post with #challenge30days and also leave a comment with the link of your post, so I can evaluate if you're one of the 3 lucky Steemians that will get a full upvote from me.

Where Do You See Steemit In 5 Years?

That's one of my favorite topics. Not exactly how Steemit will be / look like in 5 years, but making predictions. I like to throw out my mind at things and apply different models and see how it will play out. Knowing this, it might not be surprising that my favorite movie / book genre is Science Fiction. Altered Carbon type of Science Fiction, to be more precise.

So, how will Steemit be in 5 years?

I think there will be at least 3 layers which will cover the "Steemit experience":

  • the blockchain
  • the apps
  • the semantic networks

Let's take them one at a time.

the blockchain

In 5 years, the storage requirements for the Steem blockchain will be literally humungous. By then, some sort of sharding / splitting mechanism should have been developed and implemented in such a way that running a Steem node would be a task in itself, much like Bitcoin mining is a task in itself now.

There are already steps taken in this direction, with AppBase rewrite. I expect to see specialization: some people will run only consensus nodes - and get rewarded for that - while others will run only storage nodes - and get rewarded in a different way for that. The Steem blockchain will be an industry in itself.

the apps

I believe there will be many more apps built on top of the Steemit blockchain. Now we have less than 10 relevant apps on this blockchain:

  • text / image - Steemit, busy.org,
  • video - DTube,
  • live streaming - Dlive,
  • image only - Steepshot,
  • mobile only - eSteem
  • notifications only: Steemifications
  • and a few others that I won't mention here.

I believe we will have many other apps, on many other channels. The line between TV and computers is already blurring, so I can see in 5 years some sort of TV-based entertainment, but built on top of the Steem blockchain. Also, intelligent watches are starting to pick up, and I can also see some sort of micro apps for micro content hosted at your wrist.

Oh, and by then cars will also be way more intelligent than they are today's, so probably some stuff will be built on top of that vertical too.

the semantic networks

On top of the previous two layers I also see a differentiation based on the actual semantic of the network. Just like now we have Facebook and LinkedIn, which are basically the same thing (make friends, advertise yourself, interact) but with different goals (one is entertainment, the other one is business) I can also see these equivalents on the Steem blockchain. I also see StackOverflow / Quora clones, and, why not, Tinder clones.

So, that's it, that's my prediction for Steemit in 5 years. It's done and it will remain in the blockchain forever (or for as long as the blockchain will exist) so we may come back to it in 5 years and see if I was right or not.

Your turn now. Leave a link to your post in the comments so I can check it out.

I have no idea where it will be in 2 years.
It depends on what grows on EOS. If theres huge competition or not.
Malicious whales situation needs to improve.

Do you think most users will flock to EOS when they create a version of Steemit?

In short term? No way. Network effect is strong. Steem and Steemit and other sites will improve.

In long term - I dont know maaaan.

It's hard to know where it will be, but I hope we'll see the next Hardfork this year and that triggers more growth. Then there's potential for millions of new users. I'd hope that in 5 years there will be lots of new businesses built around Steem and it will be making a big difference in places that need it. The influence of the whales will decrease as the number of dolphins swells. There are some technical challenges, but I hope the developers are thinking at least that far ahead

my entry for today:https://busy.org/@ionutciobanu/https-steemit-com-steemit-dragosroua-may-30-days-writing-challenge-day-nine-where-do-you-see-steemit-in-5-years
First of all, I want Steemit to be even after 5 years and not to go away like other promising projects in the past.

The biggest blog site in the world

Hoping for some improvements in the next 5 years. If they happen, then we could see a bright future, if not. Well, people are still using MySpace, right?

lol, I don't know, is anyone still on MySpace?

At this pace, steemit in 5 years must have beaten facebook. Except if there are other competitors that pay better

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, look forward to reading what other think as well, should be fun. This is my post on Steemit in 5 :)

Quite a fascinating topic, I'll do well to submit my entry

I hope we double the amount of users, and have some writers stay for the quality.

I am looking forward for better Steemit experience. I know there are more updates.

I agree with your points. My view is much simpler, SMT's will introduce many new communities into Steemit and will generate exponential growth.
Here's my post

I have too many things to write about and I don't want to make more than one post a day, so I will just comment instead.

In five years from now, I will buy fags from any shop with Steem. There will be about 1billion steady users on Steemit and the other related apps.

We all pay our crypto taxes by then :P.

That would be interesting to see TV on the Steem blockchain. You're right though, the lines are blurring, so it's not inconceivable.

Here's my entry for today's topic.

I am rooting for Steemit to be strong and to be able to make the changes necessary to stay at the forefront of things.

Imaginarte si en dos años ha tenido tanto éxito y tal alcance en el mundo, en cinco años. La revolución steemit será total. Saludo amigo @dragosroua .

I think you are spot on with the storage issue... it must already be humongous... but in 5 years, whoa. Now EOS is already discussing this as well as shared RAM, so the scaling is and will continue to be one of the main things. The race is on.

Another good topic. It's really hard to tell for sure, but it's fun to make predictions. I hope you all will still be here on Steemit with me in 5 years! Here's my post: https://steemit.com/challenge30days/@michaelluchies/where-i-see-steemit-in-5-years-30-days-writing-challenge-day-9

I'm not sure why, but these topics seem to be getting harder. :) It's probably me. Oh, well. I tried. Here it is: My 9th Day post.

Here is my post for today. I am not a fortune teller though :)
Where do you see Steemit in 5 years? challenge30days Day Nine

Im thinking top 20 coin with over $20bln in total market cap with hundreds of dapps (SMT’s) and restaurants/coffee shops and other vendors have adopted steem for mass usage

I am first time use steemit in march 2018, In coming years steemit decrease the users of other sites, because many users of facebook leave it and join the steemit.

Possibly, but don't forget Facebook is getting involved in the blockchain now.

I definately will join this challenge because I see steemit going places ,,

i'm new hear ..so i need some time to understand this

Now this is an exciting challenge that i have to participate in today.Let me get time and hit up my post.

Your post is so informatic and meaning ful for me.

Hey @dragosroua. Again, I'm coming in the last second with my post. It becomes substantially difficult to keep up with the challenge, but I said to myself at the beginning that I would post every day, so I'm going to hold my word.

Here is my post for today. https://steemit.com/@tim3w4rp/steem-steem-to-make-us-all-rich-in-5-years

I have made another of the challenge and is in relation to my previous post on what needs to be done to make Steemit better
