Following a comment to my last article about 5 not so obvious reasons the price of Steem is mooning, an interesting point came up: what exactly makes Steemit a product? What are the parts of it and, more importantly, what is the percentage they're contributing to the whole product? Is it only technology? Is it only human interaction? Is it only code or only people?
I'm writing this article in an attempt to find an answer to this question and I'm also calling my fellow Steemians to a brainstorming session. I don't believe there is only one answer to this question (after all, there are as many realities as people describing them) but it may generate some interesting points of view.
Here is my take:
1. Social interaction: 65%
It's the cornerstone of the whole product. Without social interaction, Steemit will be, at most, an online repository of content.
2. Technology: 10%
It may be surprising for some people that technology plays such a minor role in the entire product, but that's my opinion. As spectacular as it was 7-8 years ago, the blockchain technology is becoming a commodity. Blockchain as a service is a normal paradigm, blockchains with hundreds or thousands of transactions per seconds can be installed and run by a college graduate and the overall access to technology improved dramatically.
3. Marketing: 25%
This is what the percentage of marketing activities should be, not what they are right now, unfortunately. And when I'm talking about marketing I'm not talking only about promoting the platform, the technology, I'm talking also about promoting social interaction, all sort of community activities. There were some initiatives, but they were received mostly with irony (mostly well deserved, if you ask me).
So, what's your take? What is Steemit made for, from a product perspective?
I'm a serial entrepreneur, blogger and ultrarunner. You can find me mainly on my blog at Dragos Roua where I write about productivity, business, relationships and running. Here on Steemit you may stay updated by following me @dragosroua.
I am bullish on Steemit. @dragosroua
And its not the monetization of social, censor free media or bootstrapping an anarchistic ecosystem.
Its the Steemit people.

I think you're basically correct, though I suspect I'd add some to the "people" percentage. My personal belief is that all monetary value originates in people.
I think this could probably be proved logically, but to be honest I have come to that conclusion from the perspective of theology. It's based on something that Jesus said:
I think it's pretty easy, as an individual, to see the truth in that. What would I exchange for my life? There is nothing I wouldn't give, because my own life is of infinite value to me.
And so, the "other stuff," technology and etc., is mostly window dressing.
Having said all that, it's been fun watching the value of my Steemit wallet rising recently... ;) :)

An interesting question Dragos.
I think if we use the analogy of a nice new car - what does it mean to people?
Some people care about the specs - how big is the engine, how fast does it go, what's the fuel economy? Stuff like that.
Other people want to know what it drives like, understeer, oversteer, how hard is the ride?
Still more what to know what the resell value will be.
And some are just happy that it comes in bright red.
So Steemit is like that. For each of us it mean different things, and they are all valid.
For me, it is a place where I can write and get interactions / feedback on my writing.
I get to play games with @papa-pepper, and now my Dad has joined and we are having fun together writing and trying not to get killed off in the latest round of steem-pocalyps.
So I'd say Steemit is made of an innovative mix of technologies that support interactions between creative and inspiring people, and helps them live their dreams.
It's a dream machine.

Steemit as a platform that provides the quickest incentive I'm currently aware of for the creation and curation of open source content. The type of open source content I focus on most revolves around open source architecture of built environments and infrastructure. I plan to be a part of expanding the kinds of content creation and curation that Steemit rewards to include open source Building Information Modeling (BIM).
