A Dreemit's Steemit Guide for Newbies AND an Earnest Look for Veterans

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

Over the past couple of months there has been a large influx of new users on steemit, which of course is awesome! Platform growth is one of the main priorities of every user on here, and I for one find this encouraging and exciting.

But I've noticed a few things that I feel could be addressed, from comments to posts, and while I'm sure that many people have written helpful articles for newbies, I figured it couldn't hurt to compose one more. Particularly from someone who not only walked in their shoes, but remembers the journey clearly.

Think of this as Steemit's Unwritten Rules. Every community has them, and once you've been here for a while they become obvious. But in the beginning it can definitely be tricky. Much like moving into a new town, except this town is exceptional. Because this town involves the whole of the world yet somehow has the feeling of a relatively small place. In the sense that so many of us that have been here seem to share common views, desires, passions, and philosophies.

I personally believe this is because a fairly large portion of the human race is evolving. Readying for the next stage of consciousness, of a world where creativity and inventiveness, sharing and seeking to love and understand one another as well as the mysteries of this place, is going to take precedence. We are not quite there yet, we obviously still base a lot of what we do on monetary gain. But real change, big change, never happens overnight, so I think of this as the first step in that direction- which means the old world and the new will mix for a time.

I'll talk more about this at the end, but I think I should probably launch into the promised guide for newbies first.

Okay so let's begin with--

When dealing with authors who have been here for some time- have a high REP (this is the number next to your screen name, which begins at 25 and hopefully goes up-I'll discuss this more later) or a significant amount of SP (Steem Power, if you look in your wallet you will see the different forms of currency for the platform. The more Steem Power you have, the greater your vote) or both, you should not:

1)
a)Leave a half-assed comment about the post
b)then put a link to your own post,
c)or tell the author to follow you,
d)or tell the author to upvote your posts,
e)or tell the author to resteem your posts,
f)or do any combination of the above.

Even if you leave a thoughtful comment about the post you should not do any of, or any combination of the above. In some cases it could annoy the author enough for them to downvote you. See this post by @nonameslefttouse as an example.

You also should not:

2)
a)ever spam. Ever.
In case you are unclear about what constitutes spam:
b)Writing a comment then copy/pasting this comment to multiple users is considered spam.
c)Putting links to your posts in comment sections, also spam. (Unless the author of the post is a friend of yours and you know they won't mind)
d)Putting gifs or pics that do not pertain to the post you are in, particularly if you put them in multiple posts? Spam.
(With the exception that the gif is your signature and you also write a thoughtful comment to go with it, *see @creatr's comments for an example)
e)multiple posts about the same thing--BIG SPAM.

*Should you do any of the above you are likely to be downvoted/flagged. Should you do it often, you are likely to attract a whale who will put you on a downvote bot. In many cases this results in your posts being muted. See this blog for an example.

In extreme cases you will attract an entire trail that will put you on a downvoting bot which will hit every post and comment you make until your rep falls below zero and you will no longer have the opportunity to reap any rewards. See this blog for that example.

Recently I also came across a comment that was pretty much extortion, which I will deem the biggest DON'T of this article. It went something like: "If you respond to this comment, follow me, and upvote my post, I will upvote this post and follow you."

Ummm, dude, come on.

So those are the biggies, or what every newbie should know not to do. Now I'm going to give you a basic outline of how you should go about making friends with steemit 'veterans', or as I said above-those who have been here for quite some time, who have a high REP or a significant amount of SP.

One thing to understand is that it isn't necessarily a matter of the veterans thinking their hot stuff (though I'm sure some do), it's more that they have many followers, many people commenting, and therefore their time is very limited. So wasting it is counter-productive for both you and them.

If you've come to my page, for example, and asked me to visit your blog-I do try to do it. Though many others get annoyed with this, I understand that being new you are unaware of the etiquette so I don't tend to get upset if you aren't following all of the 'unwritten rules.' However, I just don't always have the time. I am FAR more likely to make the time for people in the following circumstances, and I'm willing to bet others are as well--

Basic do's (it was easier to make a point by point list of don't's, for this part it will be a bit less formulaic)

Leave a well-thought out comment on a post, introduce yourself and let the author know that you are new, then come back to the same author and leave another thoughtful comment. And one more-At this point it would be fine for you to say something along the lines of "I would love it if you find an opportunity to have a look at my page."

(With certain people you can get away with using this tactic right off the bat, but I would suggest two comments minimum, because many authors might be looking for you to return enough times that it's obvious you are interested in their material, and not just looking to make an influential friend.)

Also, to be clear, when I say a well-thought out comment, I don't mean a paragraph of flowery compliments. Just something that lets the author know that you have read the post and not just the title and a few highlights. Of course compliments are great, but there is a fine line between genuine complimenting and arse-kissing.

To be clear though, this is a social platform, so Be Social. Talk to people. But don't just tell them Great Post, tell them why their post is great. Don't just tell them you love what they have to say, tell them what you love about what they have to say. Strike up a conversation. Don't just tell them their art is excellent, tell them what about it you find worthy of excellence.

Be genuine.

With your comments, and also your posts.

And that's really all I have for a definite Do list. It's much easier to point out what should not be done. What should be done...it's very much dependent on the individual and their personality. I can tell you how I do things, but if you have a different nature than me, then it could potentially hurt more than help.

At the beginning I said I had more to say concerning how special this platform is.

that sign.jpg

Recently @nonameslefttouse put up a post and just below his 'signature' he wrote- He's got the whole world, in his hands.

I continued the song in the comments and he told me he had no idea why he'd written that. It had nothing to do with the rest of his post after all. I had the song "It's a small world after all" stuck in my head a couple days prior to this, and for me it seemed connected. Just as so many things have seemed connected since the day I joined. Despite it's diversity, there is a unity.

Though I'm writing this for the newcomers in particular, I also wanted to speak to those who have been here for awhile. Some for over a year, or just over a half a year like myself.
As I've said, this place, despite being global, despite being of every ethnicity you can name, is for the most part a large Cheers.

And there is no reason why it can't continue to be so while it expands. It's true that eventually, if not already, it will be impossible for everyone to know everyone else, but we can still care about those we don't know, we can still feel connected to them and make them feel connected to us, included. For every person we follow they might get close to a hundred people we don't know and we'll be connected to those hundred through them.

This is a special place. Almost magical. And I can see no reason why it shouldn't retain these aspects even after millions climb aboard. It is a small world in the grand scheme of things, we are brothers and sisters on a tiny planet in a vast universe.

I have never felt that more than I have these past months of being on this platform.

So let's all work together, the veterans and newbies alike, to keep this place going in the right direction--

forward.

Hahaaaaha, Oh God. You know how much I love your buttcrack photos, they are a vision. I will not say what they are a vision of, I'll let your colorful imagination fill in the blanks.

Excellent summary.

One other thing to add is approaching people in SteemitChat. In general, before messaging someone in Chat I would recommend:

  • Ideally have some interaction with them in post comments, so that they know who you are
  • Let them know in a comment that you intend to message them
  • When you message, don't just say Hello. Say something like "Hello. I'd like to talk to you in private about ..."

If I see a message in Chat from someone I've never interacted with and they just say "Hello" - sorry, but I just ignore it. If I saw a message saying, for eg "I see you've done some recipes for people with allergies. Can I ask you some questions about that?" I would happily respond.

Any other thoughts on etiquette for Chat?

What do you mean" Steemit Chat"? - I thought you were busy - you won't see me wasting time on there, I've got work to do!
Here is a photo I just took of your desk:

My desk does feel like that some days...

Awesome, yes, that's a great tip. As I just told @hanshotfirst, I'm glad I waited to vote (waiting for my power to get up there) because now I can position helpful additions to the post at the top.

Actually, I should have thought of this since I had an interaction with a new guy on chat. He approached it perfectly, and we are fast becoming friends :)

Only being here for almost two months, I've run into some of the stuff you talked about in your post. The spam. The follow for follow. And I frankly, don't understand it. If we just blindly follow each other, the quality of content here will only decrease. Good content creators should be rewarded . .

I decided to invest enough to get a decent amount of SP. It seemed like a wise thing to do. I'm currently in the process of getting back into blogging, gaining followers etc . . but I want them to be "real", if that makes sense. Not a tit for tat sort of thing. It diminishes the value.

A well-thought out comment does wonders for me when I write out a post. The make me feel happy about writing, plain and simple. The generic comments for self-upvotes (done by users with high and low amounts of SP) I read, but for the most part, skip over. But they are in the minority, thankfully, and just move on after a short time.

You have nailed it exactly, I will probably direct people to read this comment for further explanation as to why it's a waste of time.

That was definitely a wise thing to do, there will be some corrections like the one we're going through with steem, but eventually it's going to blow up. I know it. And starting out with some steem power tells people you're serious about being here, which is always a good thing.

Nice to meet you @shawnfishbit, I will definitely check out your blog when I get a chance :)

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Just about everyone enjoys real interaction. The best advice to anyone is to try to genuinely engage with content creators who you enjoy.

This place can be world changing for a huge group of people. I hope that we can all work together to make that a reality.

Perfect! I'm glad I was waiting for my voting power to go up before hitting any comments, now I can position helpful ones at the top. Thank you!!

I have thought all of these things and you have put it amazingly! I still have to reply to your reply, my internet time had been a bit limited but I try to get on to vote up my homies :0)

Why thank ye kindly- oh no worries, this homie wants you to have a splendid time away!

Cheers homie!! ;0)

I finally wrote the Mom and a Brewery post, lol!

You did and it's fab!!

great post if you unterested tourism and nature i pleasure to visit my blog thanks my dear

Thank you so much! Being new here has been overwhelming...to the point of where sometimes I doubt myself being here. It's posts like this that help me get things figured out and gain a little confidence back to keep going. Thanks so much!

Oh, I know that feeling well, it is a steep learning curve and I couldn't find a single post like this one when I joined. In my experience if you do something you love with determination and pushing forward that's what it takes. As well as comments like that one, socializing on this social platform is definitely key!

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment and imparting even more wisdom! I definitely have determination in my blood! I entered my first contest today. Not sure I would have the confidence to have done that without your post :-).

This is really great advice for new people joining Steemit @Dreemit! Great content. Keep it up.

You can check out @ENAZWAHSDARB for the best Entrepreneurial content! If you appreciate what you see, you can leave a follow! :)

Good reminders!

Good comment! (KIdding, haha, my friends can slide on the two words ;)

I feel like most of us "veterans" have all ended up making one of these posts at this point. I felt the need to flag a comment for spam today. Copy pasting and linking on everyone's post that came up and already on Cheeta's blacklist. Sigh, some just don't get it, but they won't last long anyway.

It's all good, people like that will fall away and they should, they're not ready. That doesn't make them bad, just at a different level, and I'm sure I was there in a not so distant life :)

Oh it was loong. Seems like it's been a week since i started reading.. :d
It was so long that i've grown a beard! I turned gray! Actually.. nah it wasn't that long.
Was fun to read, thx :d

Funny guy! You're doing it right btw, you are definitely memorable, haha, I have you on the short list of new people I need to check out ;)

The thing is.. i'm not sure about blogging. Just having fun.
There is almost infinite cool stuff to read on steemit. So while i'm trading i can talk time after time with different people and cool my head. Sorry for unnecessary commentary.

Oh gotcha, and that's totally fine. I have a couple friends on here like that, no need to apologize :)

I couldn't agree more! I joined Steemit this month and I've seen plenty of new users do what you said. They get on and just spam everything with generic comments. I myself treat Steemit as a social platform, and one to engage in positive conversation to connect with people from all walks of life. This is a community, not some marketing tool to advertise your account. If people want to do that, they need to go to instagram, twitter, or facebook. I've enjoyed Steemit so much since I got here and love every article I read. It gives me new ideas and a different perspective on life. Thanks for sharing :)

Sometimes I think it might be a matter of language barriers. If their English isn't very good then they'll be more likely to keep using the same line over and over...I probably should have mentioned this, suggested google translate and talking to my friend @jlufer. He's almost strictly Spanish speaking, but still makes the effort to find different ways of telling you he appreciates you.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, I was the same way, I fell in love. You're doing great, excellent feedback. I'm going to follow you now :)

Thank you! I think that's great to use google translate, it's such a great assistant. I do the same thing myself. I also heard there's an app that you can talk into and it translates it immediately, I'll have to look it up. At least he's using what he can, and even if we can't understand the words, the body language is universal. Just one step closer to breaking the language barrier.

And I've been following you as well :)

Hello dear friend, today casually I was thinking of doing a post with some suggestions for people who are just entering, I have noticed that the vast majority of the people who follow me are new guys and I have seen many irregularities and infractions that we commit when we are new.
I want to make a query because now I am doubting with what you have published, my idea was to place at the end of the post a suggestion box for the newcomer, such as the FAQ link, contest listings, and a list of 10 People as a suggestion to see their work, that list of people is spam, right?

Excellent work dear friend @dreemit always actively collaborating on the platform and users, thank you very much for sharing this excellent work

No I don't think that would be considered spam my friend, suggesting people that they should follow is a good thing. I didn't put it in the post, but I have made many suggestions to new people about a list of blogs they should look at.

I used you as an example too, that despite language difficulties you work very hard to write unique comments to people :)

Thank you! I always love to see you on my posts, and I will be visiting yours shortly!

Thank you very much dear friend @ dreemit, for your answer
Sorry for not visiting your post more often, I'm with several inconveniences that are taking away time, I'm trying to solve, among them the internet service is very bad, I have microcut that make me lose a lot of time.
I send you a big hug, greetings to all your loved ones

'a)Leave a half-assed comment about the post
b)then put a link to your own post,
c)or tell the author to follow you,
d)or tell the author to upvote your posts,
e)or tell the author to resteem your posts,
f)or do any combination of the above.'
Well this sums up my comments section
I do all of these!
Do I get a prize? Haha
Great Guide to new members here on Steemit. I hope the sites keeps on growing like it is currently and one day it rivals some huge social media platforms.
At least the community is going to be that little bit better with your helping hand :)

If that's true...I don't remember you doing it, haha! I only remember you making me laugh several times, including this one, which is why I'm following you. If it were possible I would tell people "Do make people laugh" unfortunately that's one of those things, you either have the gift or you don't. Forcing it would work against you ;)

Great advice for new members @dreemit! Always positive, positive, positive! :)

Thanks @tonyr, you are an awesome example of how people should treat this place when they're new ;) I should tell them to follow your comments around, like shadow interns haha!

:) I do like to comment! :)

I hope a lot of those who are new to steemit get the chance to read your post as it can be a confusing place when you first get here and can be difficult to find your feet but if they follow your advice I'm sure they will do just fine! :)

Hello, thanks for the informative post. As one of the aforementioned newcomers, it was quite nice to see a clear formulation of what looks like a core aspect of interacting on Steemit.

I'll be sure to keep these things in mind moving forward. Cheers!

Hi there, I'm glad if it helps in any way! As I said, I was new once too, a lot of things I learned by trial and error, but I thought it might be nice if I could eliminate some of that for people.

Good luck friend!

Love the That 70´s show pictures, I am a very big fan of the show! You always post things like this one, always care about giving back to the community some of the tips you´ve learned, right the same way you did with me when I started.

That is the only direction, Forward...

Hi love! How are you? I actually have a post of yours up in my browser, but I'm doing a voting experiment which requires me to wait for my power to get back to at least close to a hundred percent. I'm lining up posts, haha, and I finally broke and started commenting on them, letting the people know I'll be back with a vote. I'll do the same with yours now that I've told you :)

I did the same, got my Voting power to 1% to see how it works, I think we shouldn´t go lower than 80% due to the recovery time of the SP, also votes with lower than 50% are so disappointing to give. My lasts votes while experimenting were 0.02, that felt discouraging for me, I wasn´t helping anyone but I had to experiment right?

Thank you so much! Ohh now I feel honored :) I hope you read the one about Love journal... It is one of my best pieces I think, the only one Ive wrote completely from the heart.

Yes! Let them know! Otherwise they´ll think you don´t love us anymore :( hehehe hugs and kisses my friend

I don't think that was the one I had up, but that's an easy fix ;)

I'll let you in on a secret about my book so you can stop being jealous--it's already written LOL. It would not be wise for me to write a series straight into steemit, there's too much planning necessary to make sure all of the characters, big and smaller plot lines, stay consistent, keep their integrity, etc. A single stand alone book is one thing, or short stories, but yeah, definitely not a series. This book is nearly five hundred pages, and I'm about a hundred and fifty pages into the third book. I'm really hoping I can get that one finished and revised before I'm done putting this one through. Fortunately I have it plotted out and books four and five are partly plotted too.

Oh and big squeeze and smooch right back at you ;)

Good stuff my man. I will keep it in mind while I keep build and bonding in this community. Good to know that someone cares for us plebeians, too.

Thanks! Though 'my girl' would be more accurate, haha, no worries, I've lost count of the times I've been called bro here ;)
I hope it helps, good luck my friend.

I got that bargaining reply on one of mine, "IF you go through the following steps correctly, then I will upvote and possibly read your post". I flagged it with 1%, a warning shot. I couldn't reply because it was one of the demands, and I'm terrible with demands.

I know you did, haha, it was actually on your post that I saw it :)

I am actually a newbie and I have to say I should have read an article like this sooner. The unwritten rules ; it difficult for newbies to learn with time. Providing it in ur post, that the coolest...... Appreciate it 😊

I'm really glad to help out in any way I can. I know how difficult it is in the beginning. Hang in there, you'll do fine :)

Thank you 😊

Nice! It's awesome that a lot of people echoed your sentiments here, sister! I had written about some of the points you mentioned in the past, but no one really ever listens, so I decided to just stop and let them prove me right. Oh, wait, most of those people aren't active in the platform anymore because even though they post every hour, they're not seeing significant profit haha!

I do hope newbies (and veterans alike) heed your call. You have developed significant clout here, so it's nice that you're putting your dolphin status to work. Me, I'm stuck as a minnow trying to position myself in a sea of newbies haha! Will I get lost in the tide? I hope not, but we'll see :D

Preach, sister. Preach!

VERY well said @dreemit. I'm brand new here and this helps a lot! I had already noticed some people doing exactly what you said not to do, and was thinking....hmmm...that's kind of rude....glad I'm not alone with thinking that. This place DOES feel like CHEERS!

That's awesome to hear, I'm glad to help! You're already ahead of the curve if you recognized that, haha, and from this comment I can see you're a natural. I'm betting you'll do great here ;)
Welcome to the global Cheers!

Preach!

I absolutely agree. I've been on here for 2 weeks (I'm a piano teacher so posting tutorials etc) and I'd already started to follow these unwritten rules unknowingly. I'll post a video teaching an exercise or something, and people will post things like "Nice article, follow me back and upvote me!" and I'm thinking..... "Naaaaaaaaa", it makes them look kinda cheap, and that's me being a minnow just 2 weeks in, so I imagine after a year of that it must be slightly grating to say the least. Having said that on my first day I did do one reply asking for a follow before I realised it wasn't the thing to do, so I guess we've all been there.

Nice writing style by the way, it kept me engaged all the way through. My upvote was worth a powerful .14 for your pot! I know I know.... you're welcome...... (Bows whilst walking backwards out of the room)

I think for some it is fairly apparent pretty quickly, and generally as long as these people perservere and don't get discouraged they end up doing very well here :)

Ha, I appreciate your honesty, that says a lot about you. Thank you for the compliment and the fourteen cents! When I first started it was months before my vote was worth a couple pennies so you're already ahead of the game :)

I also read your other comment, and I'll answer here. I see no reason why you couldn't re-post something down the road. I've been considering this myself. In my case I intend to to a little revision and add some photography, so maybe when and if you do choose to re-post just put something in it that adds a little more value :)

Teaching piano, that's a really awesome idea, I will definitely check out your page!

You know what they say, honesty is the best policy. :D I am loving Steemit so spending quite a bit of time creating content for it, which is great because in turn I'm practising more on the piano, which is never a bad thing. Glad you like my idea of doing lessons on here, I thought I'd give it a shot and people seem to be liking it. I'll look out for your posts in the future. Hope you like my page.

I've just thought of a question in regards to 2 e). If I record and edit a piano tutorial or song that takes me hours to do but it happens to get missed, if in a few months I repost the video for the benefit of my new followers, would that be frowned upon or okay?

Great post ! you got my follow for sure ! Dreemit Steemit ! :D

Thanks @chrizbiz, hope it helps :)
