Do you upvote an author or his post?

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

The question from the title is something that I want to discuss with those who would like to comment.

So, do you upvote the author or the post?

Yes, I know what the most of you would say:

There are too many posts to read, we can't check them all, but we know who are our favorite authors and we give our upvotes to them!

I would ask another question to the same people:

Do you feel disappointed when you see same names on TRENDING page every day?

And the most of you would say "YES" without hesitating!

And exact reason for that is our way of upvoting!

No matter if you have more or less Steem Power, your day lasts for 24 hours. And you are not the whole day on Steemit, if you are normal person, you have other things to do in your life. We all here depend on our supporters and the most of us know who they are and we support them back. So this is the way of thinking of an average Steemer:
"This guy supports me from beginning, and I support him! I will give my upvote to him, no matter what he just wrote down, I don't need to check it, because he is my supporter! I don't have time to read the post, I will not open it, just upvote it!"

Well, it's more than nice to have every day supporters!

We made really effective and strong community on Steemit and it's really beautiful how we support each other and watch each other's back. So we got used to support the same people and the most of Steemit users don't open the posts of others, just upvote it!

The funny thing is that there are many really "STEEM POWERful" users that think the same way. They just got a habit to support the same users every day and that's the main reason why we have the same names on TRENDING page every day!

I can tell you this from my personal experience:

When somebody who had @ned's key upvoted my posts every day for three months, I got used to get rewards 10$+ every day. I always had more than 80 upvotes and rarely more than 8 views. So, in that period, somehow, I stopped to care about my content! And I posted slim posts with no real message in them, just few photos and few quotes just to fill the lines between them. I was receiving rewards every day but the quality of my posts was bad! I didn't like what I was becoming so I had to do something.

The point is, Steemit can easily turn to a platform where publishing of trash can get you awesome rewards! And we don't want that, so something has to be done! Maybe some kind of restriction of upvoting the same people? Nobody can force you to read every post, but if there wasn't any "upvote button" on the list page, you would be forced at least to open each post that you want to upvote!

Thank you!

To answer to the Questions!
I did my experiments all the time. I knows , who are supporting me all the time. Before #whalepower time.
This went back a year ago, some how @ned supporting all my posts. I've never neglected who have Upvoted me. I tried even harder for every of my contents.
Well, that was parts of my success stories.
Here , I am today , I became a Curator / Moderator. - A founder for #whalepower Tag.
My Visions to change what many have becomes Neglected , even they have becomes senior in the platform. I want to show that this #steemit platform can be as Great and Better place for the Future.
I have plan for the future. The Future is in the hand of the Next Generations.
I am building a New Community that are willing to Give to All, that will be doing a Great works for #steemit future.
Thanks Everyone for their supports.
Thanks @dumar022 for this post. We need someone like you in the #whalepower Team. A Better Community for the Future.

THANK YOU #whalepower

I never go by the poster - only the post. I find the posts to upvote in steemnow and open them to decide. If I see someone I already like, I might be quicker to choose that post to open, but I still read the posts. I'm only upvoting 8-15 times a day with no slider, but even when I get one - I would still open the posts and read them. I also use some of my votes to upvote good comments on my own posts, so I run out easily.

I never look at my feed - just new posts through steemnow. I have no idea how anyone can use the feed here.

I read about someone bigger than me by far who goes through their feed and just upvotes all for a good period of time - I'm assuming none get opened. This is not my style on any platform. I have a reputation and I don't want people to see I vote for poor posts - just like I would not retweet a bad tweet etc.

Yes, that could be one of right ways to steem around, thank you

@dumar022 - You make a very valid point. Many times I get a feel that some (even senior) steemians are voting by author names and not by content. The problem is made worse by autovoting mechanisms like Steemvoter and Streemian. Initially, perhaps the relationships were formed where some authors content was trusted by senior steemians and these authors were put on autovote. However, in some cases, content has deteriorated to downright ridiculous in some cases but the votes continue.
Anyway - I think content should be voted when it is good.
Thanks for raising this pertinent point for Steemit betterment. Upvoted. Cheers

Thanks! I would say that MOSTLY SENIOR AUTHORS are voting by author names and not by content

Of course, there are some notable exceptions too. I know for sure that some senior steemians do look at content and even provide feedback.

I always open a post before upvoting, even those of my friends. Plus, it would really be disrespectful not to read their work. I started following them because I was interested in what they have to say. You cannot establish a connection without reading somebody's work, comment on it. And I am grateful when they comment on my posts!

Exactly!

It's a very good point.. if people don't actually read content.. and upvote any content only so they can earn rewards.. that will give false positives..

Bad content will rise and good content may not have the chance to be seen.

FYI.. i only upvote articles i like.. and only follow people who i am actually interested in.. sorta no point otherwise.

I agree - completely!

followed and upvoted you....if you like latest designs, please follow me

I see what you are saying. Good points, especially the last one. Followed, resteemed and upvoted. Thanks for caring about the quality of this platform and its users.

Thank you for this nice comment!

Excellent post @dumar022 you have my full support!!!!

Thank you @adelja

I totally agree with you, I am for removing "upvote button" on the list page!
But still have to change my own habits :)

It's more important for those with 100 000 Steem Power to change their habits than us! Thanks

That seems to be a great idea! having the upvote button only after you have opened the post.

It's a simple solution but it would bring bots and steemvoter down

This post has 24 views and 56 votes at this moment. So 50% of the the upvoters don't give a monkey what you wrote ;) And honestly I sometimes do the same, just to support the authors that I like, even if I didn't have a time to read the latest post.

For me sometimes it's 1 and sometimes it's 2.

We all do that, but I really try to keep up with number 2

I promise, I upvoted this after giving it a good read.

That's indeed a problem and unfortunately I can't think of a good solution! What I can say is this. If you work hard you will sooner or later reap the fruits of your labor :)

I saw very pointless posts with large reward and really good posts without any reward. In last 13 month, I wrote both kinds of those. And I always got better rewards on bad posts than on good posts... Who would know?

Ha! Well I started here on steemit with memes and shit got hardly any rewards. Since I started taking it more seriously rewards ,followers ,comments everything is steadily increasing :)

You make a good point. It would be a great waste for Steemit to become something like we can all see in today's clickbait journalism and other social networks.

Another post of yours @dumar022 that tells it like it is. I always read the post I vote on, but have been voting when the posts are not so hot. From now on going to reward the ones that deserve it.

Unfortunately, nothing will change because we talk about people who work to stay that way!

I can only speak for myself but...
I think it's logic that you start by checking the posts of the people you follow... you followed them for a reason after all. When I start to follow someone it's only because I like the content he posted... so when I see his/her name appear I of course check his/her new post... but that doesn't mean I upvote! I even unfollowed people that start posting crap...

When I have done my daily round of followers I most of the time have some VP left... and then I visit the for me important hashtags to upvote, and in some cases find, new people to follow.

But that's me. And I suppose I would grow more rapidly if I started to upvote all and everything... but I don't want to see crap that doens't interest me in my feed 😊
