I'm pretty sure that's an average of all price fluctuations over a week long period. Could be wrong though, don't quote me on that. Anyone know better?
It's due to the exchange rate changing. The estimated value you see is based on the average exchange rate over the last 7 days. It will fluctuate over time, and as Steem is still a young currency you can expect it to jump around quite a bit
If the price goes down then your value will go down. @joshbreslauer is correct, the price evaluation is based on a 7 day average. So you can gain steem, but that won't mean you are gaining USD at the same time.
