Yes you can really make money on Steemit,you get paid with Steem coin which is a cryptocurrency (i hope you know what a cryptocurrency is), those Steemcoins that you earned can be changed to USD or other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
You can exchange to BTC in a minute or two - I made a guide here if you are interested - and then convert to USD, EURO, GBP or whatever else through your favourite exchange.
You cannot however expect to make much on a post like this - try dedicate yourself to something which interests you and publish an article about it.
