A new social network?
Like majority of us would have noticed, most of the posts on here are directed at steemians.
Although this seems very natural for a young community with people still trying to grasp what Steemit is all about and how best to use it. However I believe that to attract new folks and grow the community, we should maybe treat our Steemit blog like we would do our Wordpress or Medium blogs.
I used to have blogs on both Wordpress and Blogger and I can't remember ever writing a post targeted at my fellow Blogger and Wordpress users only. The goal was to write articles and provide information that will capture people's attention, by showing up in search results, and give solutions to questions they may have. Even Medium articles tend to follow the same path.
So why should Steemit be any different?
The problem maybe lies in the way Steemit is being marketed. I do not think Steemit.com is a social network. I believe Steemit.com is more of a blog and should be treated as such. Except maybe Medium is also a social network.
I personally have been finding it hard to decide what type of content I want to put up here and this has been really tough. A social network like Facebook and Twitter would let me post my most random thoughts as they come to me. I doubt I can do that here.
Blogging on Steemit.
Seeing Steemit as a blog doesn't stop you from sharing your wonderful personal stories, your amazing artworks, breathtaking pictures, and insightful analysis of happenings around the world.
Maybe this post was inspired by an article explaining SEO and why we should optimize our Steemit posts for it.
Right now I feel articles that will drive traffic to steemit.com should be what we will be pivoting to. When a visitor finds solution to her question or problem on here then notices the monetary value beneath the post, she becomes interested and tries to find out more about Steemit. This is where all other articles about steemit come to the fore.
We will all keep working on ways to grow the user base of Steemit and keep them active.
Steemit will pay you for sharing your stories!
Steemit will pay you to share your photos and artworks!
Steemit will pay you to blog!
Steemit pays!
I agree that one of the problems is too many self-referential posts (too many posts on steemit that are about steemit or steem relative to other topics, including this one! :) ). Given the feature set and restrictions this is much more a blogging platform than a social network like facebook (though blogging communities are a type of social network themselves). I think Steemit needs to find other features to promote that make this a good platform for blogging and/or social networking other than the cryptocurrency aspect. Some people may not even care about the money part of it. So aside from that, what are the things people are going to care about that make this a better platform than wordpress or blogger or whatever?

Haha! 😂 this will probably be my last self-referential post on here. Anyway, seeing that we are still under a year old, we can always look forward to better days. Probably contributions from users as regards feature sets could help fast track their implementation. The users should suggest features they need and there should be a way to effectively communicate this.

Hi! I have got to be honest - i am finding this program a bit of a maze to get around in - but i think it has amazing potential and I would like to see it go somewhere. I agree that it feels more restricted than blogging, however, you are blogging to an instaneous audience that they have already captured - instead of making of creating a blog and taking a shot in the dark for followers - and that for one is a major selling point of Steemit :) they should promote it as such :) Tamara

Hi and thanks for your comments.
Steemit belongs to us all and as the programmers contribute to its technical growth, we can also play our part by devising ways to market it properly and share these ideas with the community.
Although I believe the massive marketing is being put on hold till we are out of the beta phase.
