A dose of reality,...

Once this hf17 fiasco levels out perhaps we need to revisit the parameters of the experiment.

Has the 800mvest limit done a good enough job?

Would 400mvest give even more power to the little guys?

We already see what letting the whales run wild gets us.

Why would letting their sycophants run wild improve who makes it to the trending page?

Sock puppets alone mean that the same folks that gave us .07usd steem are still at the helm.

What level of whale disconnect is needed to make being a minnow attractive to 'good' content creators?

If limiting voting power to 800mvests has energized the base enough that a hf17 had to be pushed through to get many of them to quit in disgust, how much would a limit that doubles their impact do for the bottom line.

Steemit was rolled out as primarily a way to onboard folks to crypto-currencies.

That fact is often lost in the rewards dust up, but is clearly stated in the white paper.

This is an issue  that has to be worked out before we can realistically expect the masses to give up a phone number.

When the neighbors start telling folks that steady money can be found here we can bet that user sign ups will explode.

As it is now, you have to be favored by a whale, or whale connected individual, to get anywhere within jumping distance of the rewards pool.

The last number I saw, admittedly some time ago, was that only about 40% of folks get any rewards at all.

That may have been pre-experiment.

Having started at 3 Steem, and not being a producer of eye grabbing, touchy feely, all positive content, I can assure you that most won't stick it out long enough to earn their way to even 50mvests, as it is now.

Is that all bad?  Nope, not in my opinion.

Most folks that come here will not earn enough rewards to compensate themselves at crapitalistic levels.

That is just a fact we need to acknowledge.

We can hide it behind outsized rewards to create 'high profile' accounts, and those accounts can make a worthwhile amount of money, but the average user will not be one of those.

Again, not all bad, just needs to be made known to the newbs.

So, what can an average user expect to find here?

A wonderfully supportive community.

Money.

Fun?

Just coming here and voting for what the friendly folks have had to say today can earn some money on curation, once you have 1000sp.

Coming here, saying something, and letting the friendly folks vote on your blog will give you something as well, maybe.

The new user has to decide whether that is a profitable trade of their time for them, or not.

The odds of hitting the top of the trending page should be common knowledge for all.

Especially the newbs.

This will help keep the butt hurt down.

In our defense we can tell the newbs that getting any rewards now is likely to amount to something as quick as next year.

The rewards in their wallet will sit there and not go away.

If they hold until we dominate the market they are likely to have something from what they did do to earn rewards today.

IF they hodl, and IF we can make this place attractive to more than just a few favored insiders, perhaps our price will rise absent the manipulated pumps.

That is what we should be selling to the newbs, imo.

The hope of exponential growth.

All we need is a little help from our friends,....and maybe an incentive to hodl sp for authors,...

Have a perfectly peaceful day.

Steemit rules!!

Well said.
I think false or misleading promises will attract the wrong sort of people and they won't stay. If all we have to sell steemit as is a place where you can earn money people are going to be disappointed. We need to broaden it's appeal base. In my opinion the money should be a bonus not the main selling point.

Yep, we are going against the current if we practice to deceive.
Realistic expectations will help us more than unrealistic ones, imo.
