Steem Ecosystem Means Both Soul and Science

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

As I woke up this morning I had a surprise when I saw Steem and SBD prices have surged. I first saw why on @dragosroua's post and then went to the source and read the technical post too, which included updates about the hivemind project and the communities.

I actually had planned to buy a little more Steem today, but for now I'll wait to see where the price stabilizes. Talk about sync...

Now that I swiftly covered the good news, what did I have in mind with the title?

When I say steem ecosystem means science, you probably will say: of course, we have a blockchain, witnesses, lots of apps and tools developed for us to use. And I agree, all that constitute the "scientific" part of the ecosystem.

But we, as users, may also be interested to use marketing or basic accounting methods to increase our posts' exposure or to boost our rewards or profits. Some users target the Trending page. Many users use bid bots (I also delegate to bots for profit, but haven't used them -yet- for exposure or increasing rewards). Some users want to lease delegations of SP for a higher voting power, and are willing to pay for it. Others are interested to fill in the demand and receive payments for their delegated SP. That's the scientific part.

On the other hand, communities are driven by people who put their heart and soul into what they are doing. Their primary objective is the benefit of the community and they know they grow and earn while the community grows.

The two parts are not necessarily distinct. A person who has the best interest of the community in mind and who helps out whenever he or she can, probably has a desire to make a profit using the available tools. In fact, I think most here on steemit are dreaming to a day when they can make a living out of the earnings from the platform, if they don't already.

On the other hand, I'm sure someone who has optimized his or her account for profit finds opportunities to give back to the community. In fact, as we see today, many of the top members of the steemit community give a lot back to the ecosystem. Maybe the witnesses voting system is an incentive for that, since most of them are witnesses, but regardless of the reasons, their contribution is highly valuable.

I like the Steem ecosystem as it is. Both the science and the soul of it. I wouldn't trade either one of them for the double doze of the other. Different tones will be from time to time and I think that's healthy.
