Steemit is a decentralized social media built on the Steem blockchain. It is decentralized because its activities and the blockchain is ran by the community, unlike facebook, reddit, medium or twitter whose main aim is to take people's data and use it for its purpose without giving the users right to their content as well as taking the entire profit.
What is the Steemit Blockchain?
The same technology that runs with Bitcoin on a blockchain is the same that runs with steemit on the Steem blockchain, only that the Steem blockchain is built on Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS). The steem blockchain is a distributed ledger that allows informations get recorded in it and transactions verified by it automatically, securely, and decentrally by nodes known as witness nodes which are maintained by users known as witnesses.

Who are Witnesses?
Witnesses are individuals who validate transactions in a distributed system of consensus known a mining on the blockchain. the witnesses mine new blocks every 3 seconds and there can be as many witnesses on the steem blockchain but the first 21 witnesses produces 21 blocks every 63 seconds while other mine as backup. Every witness can mine on the steem blockchain but the community vote for witnesses who they want to represent them as the top 21 witnesses.

Click on the sign up for free button and provide information such as username, email address, and phone number. You should verify the email and phone number after which an account password will be generated.
