Why isn't Steemit as big as Reddit yet?

in steemit •  6 years ago

Steemit has supposedly reached over 1,000,000 members of whom only roughly about 10% are active. Now we have to take into account the fact that many people have multiple accounts and also many of these accounts are bots. And the interactions between these active accounts aren't that great.

Now I look at Reddit and they have hundreds of millions of visits every month and their user base grows at a much more rapid rate than Steemit. This to me is surprising because, even though you could say they have a more user friendly interface (to me that is doubtful) but frankly Steemit pays you, that should be a very big incentive.

OK, I can understand a lot of people just looking around seeing that making money on Steemit is not easy and just leaving, still the people who do this should be exponentially more than what it really is. Because most people who go to sites like these are looking for ways to make money and Steemit is offering money from the start. What could be the matter?

  • We don't promote the platform enough?
  • Most people don't really trust a crypto currency?
  • People are lazy?
  • The concept of getting paid for posting articles, videos or memes hasn't really caught on?
  • The sign up process is too slow?

I don't think promotion is a problem, plenty of people promote Steemit all over the place, in fact I have signed up 5 people, only two of them are active but I did get 5 in which I think is quite good, and I still try to talk more people into joining.

People not trusting a crypto currency does have some merit, but people who use the internet for money making opportunities are basically adventurers, and I don't think crypto is an obstacle to them.

Yes, people are lazy, but come on posting something on Steemit isn't that hard and the fact that people can see some shitty posts making a nice amount of money should be a good motivation.

As for the concept of getting paid for posting hasn't caught on is frankly naive, people can get used to being paid for anything.

The sign up process is slow but you won't know that before you sign up, so that could just be relevant if millions of people don't even bother activating their accounts.

So just what is wrong with people? I think Steemit should have way more members than it has at the moment, I think it should have more momentum than Reddit but that is just not the case, would be good to make an analysis of why Steemit isn't growing as fast as it should.

I suspect the sign up time and people don't want to go through the process of saving keys.

I know a lot of people are having trouble signing up - it costs SP everytime there is a new sign-up and there's only so much to go around. That may play into why the numbers don't jive. I hear on FB about people saying they tried to sign up but never got the email saying they were approved. With Reddit, they're in instantly. @ironshield

Hard fork 20 is supposed to fix that, but HF20 seems to be late in coming.

Interface, maybe? It does need an update...

Also, let's not forget, Reddit was a real slow burn. It's been around for such a long time it's almost considered a veteran of social media. For a long time Reddit was the USEnet equivalent. It's ok to go to slow. Arguably, so much of the carnage we'e seen within the media apocalypse is companies that have grown too quickly and then crashed and burned.

Keep going. I hope Steemit succeeds. I don't need that to happen overnight.
