I was brought up in a usual Nigerian home, I’ve seen life from one of many perspectives; the society indirectly taught us to strive to succeed mainly through competing with our fellow men for the best spot. I saw instances of people bringing their neighbour down with criticism and envy, brother was turned against brother in the pursuit of wealth and success, friend betrayed friend just with the mind-set of surpassing the other individual. Children were brought up to be stereotypic and tribalistic and the community was broken down by these social vices and development of the mass was hindered. Today People lavish in poverty and misery unaware of the fact that their discrimination and miscommunication with their brothers, friends and neighbours contributes to their suffering, while the so called wealthy few take advantage of the mentality of the poor mass and exploit their discord.
Growing up in this setting, I was not comfortable with these outrageous mind set and I always yearned for more; something better. In the few leadership positions I was entrusted with I tried to remove this mind set and show people that life is not all about competitions but life is actually better with cooperation. Doing this task alone was difficult and it didn’t yield enough result as much as I hoped it would. Then one faithful day, I was introduced to STEEMIT.

I registered on steemit with the main aim of building communication, learning new things and also sharing my ideas with the world and getting a reward for it, little did I know that this amazing community has more to it.
Steemit turned out to be the physical application of a better life for most Nigerians; looking at the methods of earning, the voting process and the acquisition of reputation and steem power is an obvious example that shows how cooperation and communication helps everybody grow intellectually and financially. To succeed on steemit we are encouraged to; post relevant articles that educate people, comment on peoples works so as to encourage then and communicate your ideas to the world, resteem posts that really impressed you and you feel should be seen by others following you and also upvote posts that you were really impressed by and you feel the author deserves a reward. This method is clearly showing how cooperation and communication is important. There is a saying that goes ‘’no man is an island’’; steemit clearly backs this statement in all ramifications to the extent that even the competitions and contests on this platform are healthy ones that still helps everybody grow irrespective of the winner.
I propose that we all apply this steemit mind set to our everyday lives.

  • In our community we need to tell people our thoughts, feelings and ideas so that they can be encouraged share theirs too, so that we can all work together and grow
  • In our community we need to encourage people and assist them in any way we can, both through our contributions and advice.
  • In our community we need to contribute physically, financially and emotionally to the growth of others, so that others too can be encouraged to contribute to our own individual growth.
  • In our community we need to advocate and support healthy competitions that makes everyone grow and shun discriminative ones.

We grew up learning to be the first, we never learnt how to collaborate, share ideas, learn from other people's opinions and accept people with contrary beliefs. Steemit is just amazing

Exactly.
But now we have the opportunity to be better people thanks to steemit.
like they say, ''better late than never''

Hey @gerald.knows.
This is steemit for you bro. Here you have a truly meritocratic society. If you do good works and bring valuable contents, people gain value, then you get valued too.

The Reputation system just tells you how much value you have brought to the system.

On this platform, people can truly discover themselves. Be the best version of you coz that's what we all wanna see.

SO keep steeming. Keep bringing value.
