There were 298,728 cases in which victims lost a total of 1.33 Billion $ and cyber criminals have stolen $ 28.3 Million in cryptocurrencies.
On June 22, the FBI presented an annual activity report for 2016. The report revealed the results of the Online Crime (IC3). It's estimated, that the number of attacks is much higher. According to studies conducted by the US Department of Justice, only 15% of the victims go to the police.
The FBI has analyzed many hot topics related to Internet frauds reported in 2016. For example, in cases where email boxes have been compromised, hackers have earned $ 360 million from casualties. This kind of fraud is the one that caused the greatest damage.
Millions of dollars lost forever:
IC3 has recorded 17,146 cases of scams that have resulted in 15 Million $ in losses. In these cases, hackers were asking for money for victims, under the threat of disclosing sensitive information. The agency has also identified various forms of online illegalities such as DoS attacks, paid assassins, sexual blackmail, data theft, etc. According to the FBI, criminals often require cryptocurrencies as payments, as they give them increased security.
Compared with the previous year, the number of cyber frauds increased by 3.7% in 2016. The losses suffered by the victims were also higher by 380 Million $. With the exception of the US, a Top 5 of the countries with the highest levels of online crimes are: Canada (3722 cases), India (2188 cases), Great Britain (1509 cases), Australia (936 cases) and France (568 cases). In the US, most casualties are from California (39,547), followed by Texas (21,441) and Florida (21,068).
The FBI also compared the ages of those who were attacked. Thus, the victims over 60 years had the greatest damage of 339 Million $. These are also the most common cases (55,043). Those aged between 30 and 39 were ranked second in the top hacker preferences (54,670 recorded cases). The losses suffered by these victims amount to 190 Million $. The last category targeted by attackers is that of young people under the age of 20. Only 10,004 cases were reported by young people, and the damages amounted to $ 6.7 Million $.
