QUESTION: How does the Steemit payout system work?

Hi. I was wondering if someone can teach me how the Steemit payout works.
I read on their whitepaper that you earn rewards in Steam Dollars and Steam Power if I am the original poster. How is this divided with the upvoters and commenters. Also, will the Steam Power I earn be able to be converted? and to what?
