When @lukestokes challenged steemians to make a post on the prompt of “What Steemit Is To Me,” I knew I had to participate.
Too Good to Be True
Have you ever had an idea that is “Too Good To Be True?” If so, you have probably had a lot of people tell you that you are crazy…
Maybe you wanted to start a business and change the world.
Maybe it was about personal freedom, avoiding the grind of the 9-5 career in favor of something more meaningful.
Maybe it was just to be happy, to be peaceful, to de-escalate towards a more voluntary society.
Whatever it is, the default answer in our society is “That would be nice, but it’s not possible.” People want to be realistic, and for good reason. In the past, we had to live by the Icarus thesis: Be only a little optimistic. Don’t fly too close to the sun.
What Steemit Is To Me: A Redefinition Of What Is Possible
Steem changes everything. The sun is way higher in the sky, and we can fly a whole lot closer to it. We’re like Icarus with teflon wings, cruising in the warmth and light.
It’s a place where musicians can band together to share their work, earning fair rewards the whole way.
It’s a place where people from marginalized political ideologies, people who believe in peace and liberty, can make real progress and influence the world.
It’s a place where intelligent debate is encouraged and hate/ignorance are treated like poison.
Steem represents a natural evolution towards a more independent and self-reliant society. As more and more people turn to freelancing for their income, it makes sense that we build structures to help this process be easier. Steem is a way for anybody to be a freelancer and do the work they want to do.
It’s not easy. It certainly isn’t free money. But, Steem is a place where your hard work will be rewarded.
I Am Grateful
Every day, all day, I am grateful for steem. I’m grateful for the community, the ideas, the rewards, and the potential. Because above all else, I am grateful that this is just the beginning.
Cheers to Luke for coming up with a great prompt. For everybody reading this, I’d love to know: What does Steemit mean to you?

I am very hopeful regarding steemit but at the same time quite sceptical, so too good to be true is quite fitting.
It is very refreshing to read your gratitude paragraph about steemit as it seems to be more hip bash steemit at the moment.
