Dear Steemians and content writers.
I came across something really interesting earlier today and I just had to share this with you all..
Today, I'll talk about Repetition.
- However, I won't go into any details regarding what it says in the screenshot above as it clearly speaks for itself.
Let's begin..
Whales or readers on steemit doesn't matter if we don't have great content. That's a fact.
We all know that "good" content are content that brings value to the readers. The readers however, will be the ultimate judge. They decide whether or not it's good, fun or quality content that you benefit from. - That's one of the reasons you'll see more votes on specific content contra other posts.
What good content actually means is almost impossible to know. Perhaps you could figure it out if you're able to read people's minds. - Are you a mind reader? - Didn't think so.
However, there's obviously a few "tricks" you can use to figure out what good content really is.. And most of us are aware of these "tricks" already. - You write content you like yourself. You publish posts you are satisfied with. Sooner or later, others will find it.
That being said..
When you write, you often write exactly how you speak.. And when you're truly trying to write something useful and something exceptional.. You often repeat yourself.
In my line of work, as an online freelancer, I do this frequently. Especially when I pitch my products. No matter where I do it. If I do it on a marketplace or in real life, I often repeat myself multiple times. - Most internet marketers are doing this. - It's essential to get sales and to bring more clients.. but it's also very important not to overdo this as it could have a negative effect instead. - If you do this multiple times and overdo this, potential clients will get the feel of you being desperate.. And desperate people are to be avoided in business.
However..
If you do this, but don't overdo it.. You'll often get superb results. I know I have failed many times in my freelancing career but I've also gained experience and found new ways. - I always try to learn from my mistakes.
How do we write on steemit then?
If I where native in English I would perhaps have the "upper hand" from the beginning, but I'm not. I'm from Sweden so English is my second language. That means, more time spent on writing to build proper sentences and to figure out how to write things good enough so others will understand what I have to say. - I personally believe that I'm doing a decent job so far.
Anyhow, the things I found today, was about repetition.
When I found this I went to my steemit blog and read some of my previous posts, and yeah, it was true. - I read a couple of other posts from other authors and I could still find the same pattern. Perhaps it's just a coincidence but people seem to repeat themselves in their blog posts. Not once or twice, but a bunch of times.
The most common is the use of words like "I" and "but". Words of that nature are used one too many times in several good articles on steemit. I'm not a "true" author who publish books or anything like that. I write reports and guides in various internet marketing niches, but even in those, this is common. I do this several times. I often start a new sentence with the same word I started the previous one too!
One thing you could do, if you want to minimize the use of repetitive words, is to use synonyms. - A synonym of the word "really" for example would be "surely", "truly" or "literally".
Hi @hitmeasap, I thought I'd stop back and let you know that of the more than 30 posts I read today, yours was one of my favourite reads. I've shared that with others here https://steemit.com/life/@shadowspub/tuesday-ramble-through-steemit-my-favourite-reads-sept-6th

Good post, I need to work on adding new words to what I write so I don't use the same ones over and over again too :)

Thank you! - Yeah, it's very common. The funny thing is that real, serious authors are doing the same thing too. I guess it's pretty hard to avoid. But you could still find ways to minimize it at least. :)

I'm really bad about repeating myself in verbal speech sometimes.

Guilty as charged!
I consciously try to avoid repetition. But, mind is like a beautiful wife. It convinces you.
When I read my draft I am not able to catch the culprit. After a while when I reread the post I make the discovery. It is too late.
The great writers never fall in love with their first draft. They are ruthless in editing. Detachment is like their second nature.
Long way to go to reach that level. As I said, mind is like a beautiful wife. And as they say,
Love makes you blind

Great post, I definitely support this kind of material. Gets you thinking. Upvoted.
I really dislike repeating myself and try to resort to the use or application of various words around a central topic that is synonymous in relation to one another. That is also a bit fun for me to work my way around a maze of different phrases to reiterate what I am trying to convey. There is a way to repeat yourself but if used in variation, I believe it to be more subtly effective as not coming off as desperate or too condescending/or superior (especially repetition within dialogues/discussions/or debates).

Its like the power of the mantra or positive affirmation. Thoughts and words have power and repitition can increase it!

Good article with good information and it's amazing how much well you write for a non native speaker! I do repeat for emphasis especially in a summary at the end of my articles but I should use more synonyms in my writing. Thanks again and UPVOTED!

the word 'that' is my Achilles heel... I have to pause when using the word. Finish the sentence.. then mentally remove the word 'that' and read the sentence. If the sentence makes sense without it, I need to toss it.

I use "I", "I've"and "I'm" very frequently. Especially as the first word in a new sentence. Kind of odd when you think about it. :D

Well, if you are writing about yourself, that would be in context. If you were writing about someone or something else.. that would be very odd :)

Good to read posts like this before I start writing myself. May a do's and don'ts of posting would be a good one.
