Just found out about this today. I'm curious how this all works too. If its what I think it is, this is reddit where good posts actually get paid instead of forcing ads on me to get paid? Please tell me I'm right. If so, this will be bigger and better than reddit in no time!
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

The first payout will be on July 4th, from then on daily.
You'll have your earnings in your wallet (top right corner of the site) then, and can send them to an exchange to get US$ or whatever currency you want.
There's a bit more details to it, the amount is different to what you see, and you can't send all of it right away. There are a lot of good posts here explaining everything in detail. And you should definitely read the whitepaper linked by @twiceuponatime in another reply here.
