The Death Of A Community: About The Recent Trolls, Bullies And Miscreants....

in steemit •  8 years ago

Earlier today, I read an amazing post on here that really got through to me, it was a post about how the author's passion was murdered by authoritarian and controlling attitude of the very people that claim to be the true Steematriots (Steem + Patriots) but are actually just here out of self-interest. The post is deservingly on the front-page, you should definitely give it a read.

Steemit was not made for them and it will definitely not be defined by them. Many people have been steadily losing faith in the Steemit platform as the trolls and their like rises. I say to them, you should not in any circumstance give up hope. I know that sounds like a war send-off speech, but it really is something like that in a way.

People are the life of a community and they are the death of it.

A community is by the people, for the people. Eventually, it is even killed by the very same people. Why? There may be many reasons to this sort of thing. The most common and major one is the spread of the disease of hatred. If you asked me to name the worst disease other than Alzheimers or cancer, then hatred would definitely be it. We should be happy that someone is trying to share his interests, thoughts and opinions with us and not ridicule the guy. We should encourage him like every great community should.

Manners maketh man.

It disgusts me to my core that we have these kinds of people in our community, nested god knows how deep inside. Doing this kind of thing makes it seem to others that bullying other people is right. It becomes more inviting and people think these guys are doing it, why shouldn't I? Bullying others feels good to these people who can't find something to have fun doing.

This is not supposed to be a witch-hunt. I'm just criticizing and asking these people to change their ways, or leave the community entirely. You cannot stay here and spew this radioactive waste at us. It is not only against ethics but it is also against the very basic sense that you are good to those who are good to you. Does it make you happy picking on someone who doesn't even know of your existence?

Constructive criticism is welcome, baseless criticism is not.

If you are criticizing a post, you should highlight the positive as well as the negative of that post. You include what that post could've done better and where it excelled. You don't just say "you suck at writing" to the author and just sail away. That does nothing. Except that it breaks the authors confidence. Confidence is something that is hard to find, harder to refine and even harder still to regain. You can't know what the author has been through. He could've found this website to escape his daily life. He just wants to post his photography and writing on here.

He wants that to be appreciated online that could not find appreciation in life. That not only renews his strength and will, but it also motivates him to do what he needed to do all along.

Now, not only these people are one-step closer to realizing their dream but they are also doing what they love.

Conclusion: Moderation

Bullying is one of the major reasons Steemit needs a moderation system right now. A volunteer system would be great for this type of thing. So basically, the steemit community/devs would pick a moderator from a list of potential candidates. It would be pretty great to have moderators that do this sort of thing in steemit community as it would be a pretty nice addition. It would be a huge responsibility, not to mention the heavy workload on the shoulders of the volunteer mods so I think either we could create bots for this type of stuff, or just pay the volunteer mods in Steem. Whatever seems the best.

I think that moderation is our last and only hope of getting the Steemit community rid of trolls and bullies but it would take some time to set a system. It's the need of the hour which only grows at the passage of each second.

Bullying is disgraceful and has no place on steemit. I agree with your post, be critical if you must be at least be constructive with it.
