Understanding the Principle of Upvote | A Guide to New Steemians | How Does it Work?

The Concept of Upvote in Steemit

In this blog, I we will be able to answer these questions and at the same time answer the questions from a lot of my friends new to Steemit. As Steemit continues to grow in our community, I believe this blog will be beneficial to the new users of Steemit who wanted to understand how the concept of rewards are being put in Steemit. The following questions will be tackled :

  • What is an Upvote?

  • How Much is an Upvote worth? How do we compute the value of vote a user has?

  • How much upvotes am I allowed to get per day?

  • What if I'll exceed to the voting limit per day? What will happen?

  • How do I spend my Upvote Wisely?

@sndbox has already made an excellent post about it, I am adding some thoughts to make it better especially because of HardFork19 changes on the system of upvoting.

What is An Upvote?

As a comparison and definition, the word "upvote" in Steemit is technically the same as "Like" in Facebook/Youtube, a "Heart" on instagram, or simple a "vote". Since Steemit is an "incentivized social media blogging platform", we need to understand how upvoting system in Steemit works.

Our upvotes rewards the users from the content they posted. Upvotes are the reasons why our posts gets value (look pending payout). Without upvotes from users, we will have no earnings in Steemit (your self vote is part of it).

How Much is an Upvote Worth? How is it computed?

As mentioned above, upvotes are essential because it is the reason a post gets value. Upvote Worth is determine by the amount of "Steem Power" a user has and the vote weight "%" allocated on a post. The more Steem Power a user has, the more valuable his upvote is.

As defined by Steemit, "Influence tokens which give you more control over post payouts and allow you to earn on curation rewards." As to how it is computed or how to determine the value of your upvote is, you can use Steemnow.com to check for a users upvote value.

How much upvotes am I allowed to get per day?

as of the current Hardford (HF19), a user is allowed to give a 10 full upvotes per day. Full upvote means you are using 100% of your voting weight on a single post. For users who has less than 600 Steem Power (if I'm not mistaken), you will be able to give 100% voting weight on posts you upvoted. So technically, you are only allowed to vote 1000% (10 times 100% full upvote) per day to upvote a post. If your SP goes more than 600, Steemit will provide you a "voting slider" which will allow you to adjust the voting weight of your upvote on a certain post.

For example, I have a full upvote of $1.00 with around 3,900 Steem Power (assumption only and for illustration purposes). Since it is more than 600 SP, I am given a voting slider to use for me to adjust the voting weight I am allocating on a certain post. If I only give 50% of my voting weight to upvote a post, I am only giving a $0.50 upvote worth (since 50% of $1.00 is 50 cents).

What if I'll exceed to the voting limit per day? What will happen?

If you exceeded 10 full upvotes per day, say you upvoted 12 posts on a single day. The effect will be your voting power decreases. The more your voting power is decreasing, the lesser your full upvote becomes. This is a perfect way to fight voting abuse in the platform.

Don't worry, it will be replenished. As far as I know, a full upvote (1) is replenished per day. Which literally means if you voted 12 posts on a single day, you need around 2 more days for your voting power be maintained at 100%. Again the lesser your voting power becomes, the lesser the value pf your full upvote.

How do I spend my Upvote Wisely?

The preference of posts you wanted to upvote all depends on you. What my advise is to use your upvotes on worthy posts that you feel it is needed to be rewarded. Even a single meme will do as long as you feel the post is worthy to be upvoted. You also need to be mindful of how much have you upvoted this day to maintain your voting power. Remember, ten full upvotes per day (100%) is the limit and if you voted on posts exceeding 10, your voting power decreases. As a result, you upvote value decreases.

@sndbox courtesy of @hansikhouse and @voronoi made a perfect illustration on how to do you maximize your upvotes via curation rewards. When a post gets its payout, the rewards are being split to approximately 75% authors rewards and 25% curators rewards. By looking at the time a content gets posted, you can maximize that 25% curation rewards by the GIF illustrated below. Meaning, if you want to maximize your curation rewards vote posts on its 30th minute or if you want to give all of the curation rewards to the author, smash the upvote button right away!

@steemflow

Hi there! Upvoted and followed. Please resteem my post and follow me. Thank you so much! ❤️😇 https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@christeldote/introduceyourself

When you remove you upvote, its value is being pulled-out to the post and your curation rewards will reset. That's the only effect I think :)

Yes indeed it happened many a times...just wondering if that wont create any negative on my curation

Hi @jassennessaj,

Can you help me understand a little better what you mean in the section "How do I spend my upvote wisely?"

It sounds like upvoting a brand new post that no one else has seen before will get you fewer rewards than upvoting one that is 30 minutes old. Did I get that right?

If so do you have any idea why it's set up like that? I'd be interested to know.

Found out the answer to this myself:

It's to stop bots getting a bunch of rewards for being the first to automatically upvote new content.

Spending your vote wisely and the thing that you mentioned above is for curation fewards (maximizing your curation) and thats part of responsible upvoting :)

Hey... its very good for steemians to earn. New comer is seek much at steemit.
Keep sharing

Thanks jassen.. I am noting this

Btw, question: is the 100% at 30mins also applicable after 30 mins and beyond?

If you're voting more than 30 minutes, either you're giving the curation rewards to the author or give the curation rewards to those users who upvoted the post at its 30th mark

Aww.. so mas ok mag upvote at 30mins jud..yay

This is very well explained, thank you @jassennessaj ! Thank you for explaining this in detail. Will resteem this!
I had an issue with my upvoting power because I registered my account to --- (I will not say that system) and what it does was automatically upvotes curators' followers. I only discovered it in busy.org yesterday that I am upvoting posts without my knowledge like more than 50 or even 100 posts daily and that's the reason why my upvoting power was only 19% everyday even if I am not upvoting posts. Now I have learned my lesson.

Glad this helped you again @leahlei :)

Congratulations on sharing a heartfelt poem that touches on the universal desire for unconditional love, acceptance, and understanding. We have similar interests. Please follow me @bijoy123

Really nice explanation of the curations rewards. I didnt know that it was all about the timing you upvote an article. I like this article so you got an upvote from me :)

Very Good explanation 👍👍👍. . resteemed.

Well explained..!!!!

Very informative @jassennessaj and I personally found it really helpful to learn about steem.now! I didn't know about this tool but have now set myself up on this and can more easily monitor my upvote values in case I lose track of how many posts I've upvoted which I often do as I get absorbed in reading content. Thanks so much!

I am much more honored to bring valuable content for you sir @natureofbeing :)

Thank you for article and your efforts for making it.

Very helpful. Thank you. They've raised the number of full up votes since I was last active, so I've not been maximizing my curations.

Ah now i get it. good thing I stumbled upon this post. Thank you.

Thank you very much for answering some of my questions

Hi: I have a question about upvotes. How can I increase the shelf-life of my content beyond the thirty second clock? Can my content be refreshed somehow to regain the thirty second visibility window? I am here only about a month so I am relatively new. As a content creator I know how much time and hard work goes into a post. It is very disheartening to think it passed its window of exposure without so much as a single look.

Thank you in advance for any help with my questions.

Great read. Very helpful.
