Almost a month ago (May 26, 2017) I decided to transfer all the STEEM I had from my Poloniex account to the Steemit platform. I've waited a month to post this, so as not to alarm anyone and give Poloniex time to resolve the problem. In fact, I still have hope that I will recover my money ... but less and less :(

Previously I had read some posts explaining how to do it. A very helpful post is this one by @cryptos. But I think I was overconfident, so I recommend you go very carefully and do not make the following mistakes:

First mistake!!!

The first mistake I made was because I made the transfer from my mobile phone, so when I typed my user the first letter was automatically typed in capital letters. At least I think this is part of the problem if someone has more experience and knows I'm wrong, please comment it. My user is "jduarte" and I wrote "Jduarte". You can see what I say in the following image:

Second mistake !!!

The second mistake was not to include "Memo" in the corresponding box:

Because of these two mistakes the transaction could not be completed resulting in an error that Poloniex has typified as "Complete error" ... a well-fitting name!!

Automatically I contacted Poloniex in their support center and in the online chat (trollbox) requesting this operation to be canceled. However I am still waiting for their response ...

It is clear that is my fault to perform the transaction wrong, but at no time did the system warn me that I was doing it wrong. I am not an computer expert and I am a rookie in the "cryptocurrencies world". So I ask myself the following questions:

  1. Where did my money go? Has it just disappeared?
  2. Is the current system of poloniex really so fragile or do they simply take advantage of the lack of legislation of the so-called cryptocurrencies to steal your money?

In any case, since I am a perseverant person and I was careful to send only half of the STEEM in the "first attempt", on the second opportunity I did well and the STEEM arrived to my wallet. I can show you how I should have done it:

A retreat to steemit from Poloniex well done should look like the following:

Made a Similar mistake like this before, ended up costing me around 250+ Steem. A lot of users are going to lose their funds like this, so learning to be extra careful when it comes to Cryptocurrency Dealing is a good idea. Little did i know that if i were to make a mistake like that on Poloniex it would end up costing me

So you never recover your money when you made the mistake you talk about? So sad!! :(

My upvote may decrease your pain!

No pain no gain!
No problem @freiheit50! Thank you very much!

thank you for sharing this story. I am sure many others have made the same mistake and you have ensured that i dont......upvoted and resteemed

Thanks to you!
That's the idea @paulag!

I've read other stories like this unfortunately and no they didn't recover the funds. This needs to be addressed it's technically theft.

Keep onto them and hopefully this resolves if not at least find out where the money went! Good luck.

Thanks for the support @hotandrandom!!
Yes, I will keep onto them!!

i don't know what occurs to money that goes 'missing' like that but yes, an honest exchange wouldn't even let you send the transaction without validating the information. most banks use 'opportunities' like these to keep the money.

I totally agree @ura-soul!!

Have you looked at you history in poloniex, I only ask because I thought I had lost money doing the same thing the transaction had not gone some error so I cancelled have a look it might help. Cheers mike I hope you find your money

Yes I did, is where I took the screenshots above....

Than you!

This also happened to me. I wanted to transfer 60 Steem from Polo to my SteemIt account, and got that Error... I had to wait 4 months for Polo to reiumburse me back. Then, I tried to do it again, doublechecking my account name and MEMO where all good. However, I got the same error again!

Luckily, I replied back to Polo and in a few hours I have my funds back. Now I think I'll just friecking convert them to BTC and GTFO, leaving them in BTC.

Ok, so it worked for me. My mistake was, ironically, respecting the caps.
My username is 'MrEarthbound', so that's exactly what I typed in the address. This gave me the error.

When I used my username in all lower case 'mrearthbound', the transaction was accepted and I got my Steem in my SteemIt account

Did you ever recover your funds? I did a test run of 30 steem because I was scared i might mess it up and it’s been about 12 hours and I’ve yet to received the steem in my steemit wallet

Also does anyone know what happens to steem if it’s lost in the blockchain like this? Is there some sort of private key recovery we can use? It would be really helpful especially for people who mix up steem and SBD and send it to incorrect addresses!

Although a failsafe would be better prevention is better than cure right?

thank you for sharing this story . i wish i do notthe same mistake

Thank you! I wish you won't @hassemhamdi!

Thats sad Hope you earn more than what you lost.

Don't worry @mocool1, I will definitely survive 😜
I'd be glad to help others not to do the same mistakes. Thanks for the support!

Such a bummer! Sorry that happened to you. I always try to send a very small amount the first time to make sure the process works, then send larger amounts once I've confirmed.

you're giving a good advice @adventureevryday!
Thanks for the support!

There should be a failsafe to return your money to your #Poloniex #STEEM wallet if the transaction fails.

This however will not help if you send STEEM to a wrong account that actually exists. Then you would have to contact that account holder and beg for your money back. Luckily you can contact STEEM accounts unlike addresses for other blockchains.

It was my pleasure and I'm Grateful to you if you up vote my blogs :)
Peace
