I do not think I'm the only person on Steemit that needs an explanation on how the "Upvote to $$" function actually works.
This is My recent post from last night. https://steemit.com/steemit/@jerome-colley/is-there-room-for-one-more-person-on-steemit
I want You to focus on the number of Upvotes and $.
Now, please look at the following posts and compare those with regards to the abovementioned post.

I think that it would be greatly beneficial if someone from the Steemit dev team could chime in and elaborate. Regardless of an upvote. If @Ned , @dantheman or any one else on the team could clear this ambiguity/confusion up there would be some very happy people on Steemit. Not that there isn't happy people here. I'm normally a happy go Steemit kinda guy. I'm not mad or upset now. I just know that I'm scratching my head today thinking "damn! What's up with that?!"
So, Dan or Ned please help a brother understand the mechanics of all this because You're evidently way smarter than Me.
Peace.

Payout depends on the Steem Power of the users voting on your post. If a bunch of bots/new members vote on a post 100 times the payout may be $1 or less, whereas a single vote from the highest SP members might be worth $10 on its own.

From my understanding, it's based on the voters voting power and Steem Power, and then also multiplied based on how many votes there was when they voted so then the there vote is weighted to equal so much $.

Good point, vote power also factors in with Steem Power.

Yep, all down to the voting power and the steem power applied to the vote.
I seen one of @crok's post earlier with 82 votes and a payout of $0.01 lol
Once more people have more steem power we'll have less whales and less minnows. The middle class is the answer to everything.....

It is very simple. 99% of the community have no power to give you money (steem power) not matter how many of them vote for you; and the 1% that have all power (the whales) are not voting your content.

Like everyone else has said, it really boils down to the steem power of the voter. I too have seen posts with 100 + votes and couldn't believe the tiny payout. The good news is, as we all grow and build our followers we also grow our steem power, one of the reasons I won't power down that part of my account for a long time to come. As our followers and our steem power grows so will our voting power, and the amounts our posts earn. This platform is still in its infancy and for the most part we are all in on the ground floor. Think of it like being some of the first people on Facebook only you're going to see a return without even having to buy stock, or work for the company. Technically we are all owners of steemit and as the platform grows so do we.
