PSA - Don't use the "Promote Post" feature on a post that's already paid out once. Only use it for new posts.

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

For the time being, DO NOT promote a post that's past it's first payout phase.

I've opened an issue on github about the issue and hopefully we'll see a resolution soon.

Currently you can promote any post, even those past the first payout phase. The problem is that if it's in it's second payout phase or beyond, as soon as someone votes on the post, the promoted status gets completely removed.

I'm putting this message out there to hopefully help avoid any potential frustration this issue may cause.

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

Great work, @jesta, as always. So glad to have you in this community creating amazingly useful tools and looking out for everyone. Keep being awesome.

Everyone else: if you haven't already, go give @jesta a vote for witness. He's earned it.

Already did!!

Already did!

Me too! I'd vote for him twice if I could, lol :)

thanks Nate i got it!

Already did when he announced it!

Done, thanks for the recommendation.

I upvoted @jesta as a witness a while back. It's nice to see the updates and info keep on rollin. :)

I have submitted a Pull Request to the steemit.com github page. https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/pull/200
This will prevent people temporarily from loosing money due to this bug.

Unfortunately I found this out the hard way after having done it, hehe. I mentioned it to @dantheman in the main post where everyone is talking about the new feature. Thanks for bringing attention to this :)

Yeah, this promotion thing sounds like a cool feature but once everyone uses it, i dont see there being much difference or change besides having another trending list... with probably the same people and posts on both lists
First it looked like a good way for minnows to gain attention, but itll probably work out better for the already rich and established.
Seems pointless waste of sbd for many people who dont have much...
And seriously, if you made 2k on a post why should there be a 2nd payout period? This just allows the rich to become more rich..
Just my 2cents, which doesnt seem to mean much around here unless one has a stack of SP

I think you'll see people like me who will throw 10 SBD at a post to help it get noticed. That's why I'm excited for the promoted posts section. My vote may only jump a post a dime or so, but if I really want someone to look at something, I can give it a boost out of my own wallet.

I don't really have a response to your gripe against a 2nd payout period, I think there should be a 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th payout period... people should earn long term for their content. The people who voted in round 1 can't vote in round 2, so it's not stacking. Each payout period also resets the payouts, so it's not like they're earning 2k every round. The larger posts I've had get a 1st payout that's large, and the 2nd payout is like 3 SBD. I don't see a problem with more than one payout at all.

I had a post which was about to pay out at $33 with 2 hours to go. I wanted to try out the promotion thing, so I threw 15 SBD at it, and now it's up over $70 with 8 hours to go. To me, that's not a bad way to use up 15 SBD. :)

Clearly, I'm a big fan of the promotion tab. I also like how it burns SBD without executing the contract for more Steem or being sold on the market to lower demand. It's a win, win, win. Love it. I also like how it creates a real world example for people who might be considering advertising on Steemit. I'm curious how often it will be used once the novelty wears off.

That's awesome that it help give your post a bit more exposure, that's an excellent use case for times like this.

It's a strategic tool to use when the situation arises :)

Bernie found my post. 8-)

I guess i wasnt totally aware you could repost an old blog from weeks ago. Just thought this was a new addition along with the promotion tab

whether I will get a piece of this ?

Nope, SBD is burned

I just learned about this new feature thanks to you! It would be great if more people used it to promote minnow posts. Any post supported by 1 or more whales will already be reward with both attention and money, Thanks!

I agree with you @jesta
I believe it would be AMAZING for people to be paid long term for their content.

Agreed on both accounts @jesta.

The promotion feature is nice because, like you state, it gives people the opportunity for the...erm, well-endowed to give "proper props" to a quality piece originating from a wee minnow.

I actually would prefer that there be infinite payout periods for every community member post, just like YouTube continues to pay for thumb-ups (I presume). I like the idea of future google searches on my focused # topics producing more income two, three, twenty years from now, even if the payout per up-vote has to be much lower to make this a possibility.

This way, it's possible to put out a mass of quality content over a period of time, say two years, and then turn that blog into a form of passive income (basically leaving it alone once the posts and their respective keywords have achieved a high enough google/page rank), much like many bloggers out there on the Internets have done and continue to do. This would bring more exciting strategy to how people blog, IMO.

These are my thoughts on it too. I read in another comment thread on another post, a comment by dantheman quoting $100 SBD to promote your post, but for many, including me, that's a huge sum which we don't actually have... But if you're sitting on tens of thousands of SBD, that's a drop in the ocean.

Eventually if/when the site is huge, $100+ to be at the top of the promoted list will probably be common. Using it in the context of minnows promoting their posts probably wasn't the best context though. I've found for $1-2 SBD you can (at least currently) get your post in another place where it might get seen. If you think it is a good enough post to make $10+ if the right people see it, then it could be a good 'bet' to place.

Actually the minnow point stands, because 1$ will put you all the way at the bottom and nobody goes to the bottom to read, comon. And wouldnt you say that a 100$ promoted post would bring in big $$, right? Those same big $$ would bring that post right over to the trending list, essentially making 2trending lists for the famously rich.
Its really not that big of a deal, because i plan on being up there with the rest of the big dogs, but right now it just kinda sucks...

Money attracts money. No money attracts ... nothing :)

First it looked like a good way for minnows to gain attention, but itll probably work out better for the already rich and established.

I don't think that's not the point. In the short term, it might work for minnows, in the long term, it's meant mainly for advertisers, it's going to be great for everyone on the site.

Currently you can promote any post, even those past the first payout phase. The problem is that if it's in it's second payout phase or beyond, as soon as someone votes on the post, the promoted status gets completely removed.

Proof that steemit is a scam!!!oneone

I kid, I kid.

Thanks for this important notice!

When I've read this comment from @dantheman

anyone can promote any article at any time.

I've send a 15 SBD to try a new feature

And it didn't work out for me!

money's gone tho

Yep, that's the bug. It gets reset/removed as soon as someone votes on it.

Jesta does the person still get the promote $ amount, even if the status gets reset? Sounds like zaebar's money in the example went somewhere. Thanks!

No that's not how the system is designed, no one gets the promoted SBD amount, it gets burned.

Upvoted for visiblity.

I need a hat apparently.

Very kind!

I see that when post comments are viewed in stand-alone mode they also have the Promote button. I tried to promote one and obviously it isn't showing anywhere. Bug?

You can always powerup the poster if you dont want your steem to get burned through promoting :)

Good to know. Thank you @jesta

Okay.

Good catch, people like you are what keep steemit working at full-force! Thanks for the assist, I'm sure the news will get to the ears who need to hear it. Keep up the good work and nice job at being able to notice the small things that make a huge difference!

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Just tried it out on one of my new posts.
https://steemit.com/poker/@cloh76/how-to-play-texas-hold-em-the-right-way

and found. The more SD you use to promote the post the higher in the list your post is. Is that correct? It also means it will show higher in the categories which you have tagged your post with. Example: It wont make much of a difference in the main page since a bunch of people will be promoting their content, unless you throw a lot of SD at it, but in the tagged category, it will show up higher because of the smaller number of people for each category promoting their content.

Yeah it's likely that in some categories $1 SBD will get you on the top of promoted for the day.

thanks for the info. just that now I have to pray that no one votes on my older posts... at least they can be shown and the money is not a total waste...

an update and additional info: I just got an vote for my promoted older post. it did vanish from the promoted page and the 'boost payment' goes to zero. also, the last voter's contribution counts. so I receive a $0.03 (not bad with a single vote) for my $1 promotion fee. lol. fun.

Can someone please explain how this works!? Its the first ive seen of it, and know nothing about it!.? Also wondering just how complicated is it? ! Or please give an easier explanation of what to do for newbies! THANKS! Sorry it just seems a bit overwhelming!

Thanks for the announcement, hopefully we can get this issue resolved,

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Hi @jesta thanks for the info, is there any post with info about how this new feature work?
Edit: forget this bro, now i see how this work i think is very usefull.

i think we simply need 30 promotion as well. It will be harder to compete in the 30 day space because you have to compete against post of 30 days.

ideally i would like to have separate payments for each phase but even just allowing to pay for it after the first pay out would be fine as well.

I'm not specifically for or against the idea of a 30 day promotion, or promoting posts past the first payout. It could work many different ways, some good and some bad.

My only concern right now is making it so people don't just burn their money with no positive benefits :)

That's very good to know; thanks!

Thanks

hm i promoted a post that passed its 1st phase. thats why it doesnt show in Promoted.

Yep, that's the bug. It looks like someone voted on it shortly after you promoted it, which reset it's promotion status. That's what I'm trying to warn people not to do, but it looks like you ran into this bug before I even got the PSA out.

it was a test :) i spent 3 sbd. i dont think it would change my life if i kept them lol

Hah it's a great attitude to have. I did the same thing earlier when I stumbled upon it. Steemit's one big crazy exciting beta test we're all a part of, stuff's going to break sometimes! :)

yeap. waiting for your magic to happen: fixing the bug ;)

@picokernel actually posted a bandaid fix to the problem (hiding the button) while I was still testing things, but neither of us actually have the power to make code appear live on steemit.com. So we have to wait for the core devs to implement that fix, and then wait for the actual fix to occur within steemd.

I wish I could fix it all myself, but right now it's beyond just me :)

Thanks for making that clear - I made this mistake on a couple of posts and they vanished - was wondering what happened.

This is yet another great Tool for our Disposal and yet a great way to help push your content to a different section. One where there is not so much overcrowding. An opportunity to be seen is always a Good Call.

Thank you for this. I have just promoted an old post of mine as a test for 1 SBD, but had no clue that older posts are handled differently!

Thanks! Was looking for an answer to this.

thanks. nice post. upvoted

So, should I promote my own posts if they're new? I don't get it.

Well I just promoted a post that was 6 minutes old. The system took my 1 SD but didn't move the post to the promoted section.

it could have been promoted but just way down at the bottom of the promoted list. 1 SBD isnt much compared to other posts that are being promoted by 2 SBD - 100+ SBD

You know you're absolutely right. It was buried deep in the basement.

I had this issue playing with just one SBD but a reimbursement would he nice! =P

How did your potential payout go from 1900 USD to 400 USD? Did some influential people remove their upvote?

Yep. The issue has been resolved, so votes were removed. It's is understandable. Right now visibility and payouts are joined at the hip, and sometimes they really shouldn't be :)
