I saw Steemit about a year before I actually signed up.
It was being offered up as an alternative to Facebook. I looked at the ads in my Facebook feed and never gave it a second thought. It didn't quite make much sense to me at the time. Fast forward to a year later and I am learning about cryptocurrencies and about how to earn some of it myself. It was through this endeavor that I came across Steemit again - not realizing at the time I had already snubbed it the previous year. Now that my head was in the crypto space - things were starting to make more sense to me.
I was still so new , that my blogs weren't getting much traction and I had very little reach. Even now, with 500 followers, I still don't a huge amount of votes , responses or SBD - but it's a lot better than when I first started. A couple of times I've gotten curried and had really good payouts. I was very grateful for this and really appreciated the recognition. I continued pumping out blogs - mostly about real estate and increasingly more about cryptocurrency. It's not like I know a lot about crypto - in fact , I know very little. Still, I would read up about things happening in the crypto world and would report on them - trying to learn along the way.
Then I discovered contests - and starting coming up with my own contest and had some fun running a weekly one called Block'Em Sock'Em Crypto Cage match where I pit two cryptocurrencies against each other over the next week and contestants guess which one will be the winner by gaining the most value. It was slow at first but started gaining some momentum. It was through these contests that I started to meet some really cool people like @beeyou and @davemccoy that brought me into their fold and invited me to join them in their NewbieResteem Initiative. It's a group of Steemians that look for opportunities to reward Newbies and encourage promising new bloggers in the Steemit community.
Before I joined the Newbie Resteem Initiative - I was more focused on trying to earn as much SBD as possible. I wasn't reaching out to as many people - I wasn't trying to help promote other peoples posts. I also wasn't getting s lot of hits on my blog either. Once I let go of the pressure of trying to earn more SBD and started looking for ways to help out others - things started to turn around for me. My experience on Steemit became much richer. Admittedly, my SBD did not start growing and my posts didn't earn to much more than they already were already. But when I say richer - I mean the experience itself was better. I started forming friendships with others and that made it a lot more enjoyable. I got to know people and started reading their blogs and found out that they have really great ideas and share their passions with the world in a away that makes me want to do more myself. I see some of the things they are doing and I get inspired. When we discuss ways to make contests better , more interactive , and reach more people - it really gets my brain going and brainstorming with others has always been so much fun for me. So the focus has shifted from trying to earn SBD to creating a great experience and helping others to do the same - the Steem Dollars will come with time.
What I've Learned about Steemit
Just like real life
Some of the big takeaways from Steemit is that being successful at it is a like being successful in real life. Mind , you - I am not saying I am successful at either of these. But - I can see what it takes to be successful and I am trying my best to attain that. But much like in real life - it is about serving others first. Those who build successful business over the long term tend to center around being a resource for others. By putting others first and profits second , income becomes a side effect of your other efforts. When people can trust in your product and know that you go above and beyond to provide the best products or service they will keep coming back. In Steemit - when you are helpful to others by providing great information you are rewarded for it. Blogs that provide helpful information or useful tips are what really catches people attention. Most of the highest voted and highest earning posts are all articles that either bring some kind of perspective to situation through detailed analysis and explanation or they are step by step instructions on how to do something or get better at something. That's because people find these useful. Other blogs can be useful by being entertaining or making people laugh - that's great too if you have the flair for it. The point is that all these Steemians are serving up something that readers want to gobble up.
Creativity Abounds
Steemit encourages people to be more creative - I've seen many articles and blogs from people who have a passion for writing or photos , but haven't found an outlet to express it in till they found Steemit - mostly because this is such a friendly community that timid artists can feel more comfortable sharing their work here in an welcoming and nurturing environment. Many people use this as an opportunity to learn a new skill like drawing , playing guitar or taking up photography.
Moving up the food chain
Let's not beat around the bush - becoming a whale is hard work. It takes a lot of dedication or a lot of investing. Either way - they have to earn their way into it one way or another and for minnows and red fish - it's long road to the top. That path is going to require dedication to the platform by being consistent - most people who joined did so because they DON'T have money and are looking for a way to earn some - so investing anything other time is not an option for many. That means that to rise to the top in Steemit - you need to be posting on a regular basis and the post need to be quality post that inform or entertain or both. And just when it seems like your getting nowhere - it's time to double down and keep cranking out what you can.
More than just a good story
It takes more than writing quality posts. Networking is important. Getting to know people in Discord ( a chat application) has been a big help for me. - I started meeting people that have similar interests and checked out their blogs. Meeting the right people can connect you to others who would be interested in the same subjects you write about Make relevant comments and inquire more about the things that excite them. Normally they will follow up with your blog to see what your writing about and if you've put out good work then they will take notice. Interact with the people that leave comments - I always thank them for their comments and engage them in conversation. As you are doing this , your quietly earning Steem power for all your comments and upvotes too, so it makes good sense no matter how you look at it. Plus, you are garnering a following and encouraging interaction with you and your blog.
WILL BEG 4 VOTES
No one likes beggars. The vote beggar is the lowest form of life on Steemit - if there was a classification , it might be Bottom feeders. Most of the time however , it;s not their fault as they usually don't know any better because they are still so new. The big giveaway is that their reputation is usually 25. However, it doesn't take long for people to correct them and they usually stop after realize that it's considered in poor taste. Most of the positive repsonses they get come from other newbies who don't know any better either so it can perpetuate and get out of control and this is why we continue to see people begging for votes and offering to r trade " follow for follow " even though it makes up roll our eyes shake our heads.
To Hot to Handle
Flame wars happen here. People get burnt. I've seen some pissing matches between whales and I steer clear of them. I've read about the damage that can manifest from these angry downvoters if you find yourself on the wrong side of an issue. They can pull you right into the muck and drop your reputation like a thermometer in Siberia. While I hate the idea censorship through fear - I haven't seen them get into it over anything I have enough passion ( or knowledge) to stick my neck out over so I don't get involved myself. It's a shame that even on Steemit we're we are supposed to have shared interests - there is still turmoil. I hope we can get to point where these issues can be resolved peacefully.
New Perspective
Steemit makes me look at things from a different perspective. There are so many sides to every story and Steemit is full of human interest stories that come from all over the world. The insight I get from the stories is breathtaking - I'm watching people vacations, learning how people cook their native food , learning how homesteaders are raising their animals, seeing people learn to play musical instruments for the first time, appreciating artwork from new and seasoned artists that like to share their work - there is just so much to see and discuss it's hard to get to everything that I want to.
Thank You to everyone supporting me
What I really want to say is THANK YOU. Thank you reading me. Thank you for following me. Thank you for the comments . Thank you for the re-steems and for the curries . To all of you that have helped encourage me and supported my efforts. Thank you.
I 'd like to give a big shout out to #beeyou for introducing me to the Newbie Resteem Initiative and to #davemccoy for bringing into his circle and allowing me to be part of a really cool team. I also want to mention @themanwithnoname for helping to inspire me to pick up creative writing again and by the way check out his blog- if you love a great story - he really knows how to weave a tale. To #bitdollar and #reazuliqbal for supporting my posts and really reading them and upvoting them and commenting - I have always enjoyed dialog with you guys.
Other Steemians really contributed to helping me with contest ideas and helping to curate my work and gave me some great advice and feedback - people like #royaleagle, #mudcat36, #plushzilla, #amariespeaks, #simplymike, #coolguy123
Thank you to all of you for helping to really make my time here enjoyable.
Please be sure to check out my others articles on real estate, investing , and cryptocurrency ( and some other random dog stuff)
I always upvote comments to my blog posts
You are one the first few persons whom I know from Steemit. About 59 days ago, I saw your competition post for Crypto Cage Match on feed, someone resteemed it may be. I upvoted and participated. I was totally new to Steemit. I loved that you upvoted my comments, it inspired me. I am not a good writer but wrote about my experience with you and Steemit here.

Don't give up @sinlg - 3 months is hardly any time all to gauge ANY campaign. Just continue to write things that you're passionate about and try to reach out to others and keep meeting new friends. I checked out your blog - it looks pretty cool - it seems like you have a lot of interests you enjoy writing about.

I think you nailed it on the head with it is about community more than it is about the almighty buck. There is something for everyone on steemit, there is even something for the troll accounts, but I wont say what. ;-} It takes awhile to get them steemit legs settled under our asses, but once we do, we get moving and making waves. Wont be long before you have 1000 knocking on your door.

Thanks for all the support - The more I connect to the community, the more fun it is here. It really has made a difference using Discord to get to l know people better - it's kind of a shame that Steemit doesn't have a chat feature or direct message feature - that might help people to connect on a deeper level - it took a while before I figured out to use discord - that would be one way that Steemit could help to create a stronger community. I'm looking forward to hitting 1000!

Sooooo, do you want to go vote for vote, or follow for follow, LOL Ah no seriously, some really great tips here for new people, I am just about to hit 500 followers myself and this was a great post to come across. I like how you have broken down the different sections.
I will also be following you now as I like the sound of the blockem sockem crypot spot you have. I'll have to check that out. I mine monero at present on a small rig and trade coins then after. I have moved a good chunk to steemit and just this week set my purchase order for EOS so I can get an early adopter advantage on the new platforms that come out on that.
Keep up the good work man and Steem on!

I think the point you made about Steemit being just like real life is so true! After all, we are people interacting with each other and the normal rules about being respectful and kind to others certainly puts you in a better place than if you decide to just be selfish and do things for your own interest. Even a decentralized system relies on people coming together or else it will fall apart like everything else.
I really enjoyed how the events of your life inside and outside of Steemit are combined to great effect... the MacGyver Challenge was just one example but it shows that you are definitely keen to help people and it's great to know that you are working with people who share the same view :)

Thanks for the kind words - I find that many things seems to be a microcosm of life - and it always boils down to having respect for others - if we can be respectful to each other and be willing to help others out whenever we can, we would have a much better world. That's one of the the things I like about Steemit - it's unlike any other platform in that most people are kind to each other - as opposed to YouTube where conversations devolve into angry hate speech very quickly and no one is sharing real information - instead they trade insults - you rarely see that here - though I have seen some pretty hateful posts - the general conversation in Steeemit is for the most part fairly cordial.
I enjoy sharing my experiences - I'm really that you like reading about them. I plan to keep looking for new ways to be engaging and to promote more interaction between users.

Thank you so much for the kind words - I hope that you were able to find something useful to reflect on and stick with Steemit - I think that we can replace facebook with this if we can get away from the financial mindset and work more towards community building.

I've been thinking about that a lot today, and I agree. The financial rewards are enticing, but really it's about the quality content that it inspires. That will help our social media evolve. I'm letting everyone know to make the switch!

Thanks for sharing your experience on Steemit. You've definitely fallen in with a good crowd.
This place is still very much rough around the edges, and some people could use a lesson or two in manners, but I do agree with you, for the most part, it's a place to meet like minded people, or not, but still be able to share your ideas and walk away amicably after the exchange.
It's been eye opening to me to see how most of us seem to go through the same stages of Steemit—that first excitement of being here, then some headwinds, then some reality setting in, then some kind of disillusionment, followed by some level of doubt, frustration and maybe some anger.
If we hang in there, though, we tend to come out the other side, a little sadder, but definitely wiser, and we start to find our way.
In other words, reading this post was like reviewing my own experience, and checking each stage off the list. Hopefully, I'm done with the stages and can concentrate with dogged determination on improving my station here. Okay, I'd settle for grim determination. :)

You're very welcome - and thank you for reading my blog - It's interesting that you mention about how everybody goes through similar stages - I noticed the same thing myself - but I only know the pattern up to this point - would love to hear a whale's perspective and how the pattern continues on up to whale status. I suppose if we keep at it and continue to find ways to provide value to our readers than it is simply a matter of time. Again - another aspect of real life - success doesn't happen over night - or in six months - I know with the internet we tend to expect things to happen quicker -but we still need to put in the time. Some people are able to bring over their audience - but even those guys had to spend years building up their audience.

Now, that would be interesting to hear from a whale's perspective.
It would also depend on what the definition of whale is.
My suspicion, though I haven't confirmed it completely, is that there are not yet any whales from Steemit only, or at least not blogging, commenting and curating. Investments elsewhere brought here and the STEEM distribution are how they became SP whales.
And, I would imagine, so did most of the orca, since you need around 50,000 SP to become a low level one.
I would say that the majority of those who were not associated with Steemit but were more or less early adopters are still in the Dolphin range of SP, between 5,000-50,000. And I think some of those probably invested to get there, too.
Two years just isn't enough time, based on what I've read about how things were before, versus the way things are now, to become anything more than a whale without investing big time or being part of the distribution.
Still, it would be cool to hear from their perspective, to see what it feels like to be their stage, since most of them would have moved on from blogging to other ventures, including bots and delegating SP.

Awesome post, @jorlauski.
As it happens, I was just replying to some comments on a post that questioned whether SteemIt was rigged or not.
I was trying to make them aware of the fact that the community is so much more important than the money, and then I bumped into your post, which sums it up perfectly.
Interaction and networking are the most important factors on this platform.
Achieving SteemIt success depends on how you look at it. In my honest opinion, I’ve already achieved SteemIt success. Not because my posts bring in a lot of money, but because I have met some amazing people, who are spporting me, and are helping me grow as a person every day again. To me, that’s a lot more valuable than money can ever be.
And what we are doing with @newbieresteemday and @newbiegames, helping each other and others to find there way here on SteemIt, is far more rewarding than a $50 payout (although that would be nice for a change - lol)
If SteemIt will survive long enough, one day, we might be able to change the tides: there is an entire new generation of Steemians with a different mindset. The more we grow our accounts, the more influence we’ll have, and maybe we’ll be able to turn things around.
Thank you, @jorlauski, to be one of them!

Thank you @simplymike - It funny how we connect to things when we are thinking of them - some people call it synchronicity and it happens to me more times than I can count. Usually my life is a series on synchronicic event after another.
Strange how we get so focused on money when on this platform - it;s like just the opportunity to profit changes the way we look at things - I mean no one is one facebook trying to count how much money they are making per post ( except the spammers) they are just happy to have likes and to make a lot of friends - but add money to the equation and suddenly people feel like failures for not making more money - instead of focusing on what social media is about - socializing.

When money comes into play, people lose all sense of community, and greed takes over. Unfortunately, that’s how it is, and that’s how it will always be...
I don’t even want to see the figures of how many people are quitting daily these days. But hey, that’s more chance on exposure for us, right?! ;0)

Hey..I just saw this post. I will be back to comment when I have some time, but really good post. I am happy you joined our Newbie community and appreciate all you do for everyone. So happy I stumbled on that crypto contest on my personal account, and brought you over to this account. :)
Actually, I think we met with the writing contest from freedomexist...have not had a chance to enter one recently. Those were fun!

Lol, I did comment anyway. didn't I? I like how you wrote your thoughts about steemit before and after you met our community. To be honest, I am still here because of the members of this community. They are an awesome group of individuals. Life outside steemit is busy enough and being here on your own can be quite boring. I'm happy to have a group of friends on here to chat with and I know are supportive of one another. I know we don't have many opportunity to chat but it's not because I don't want to stop by your crypto contests anymore or read your posts. My goodness, time on here flies by! Most days, I come on and exhausted after just catching up on comments. I keep coming back though because of the people I've met on here. :)
I haven't had a chance to join contests anymore, but I know freedomexists had been powering down. So he/she may be taking things slow? The contest would be fun! Just don't get mad if I can't join. I truly hate writing nowadays. ;)
