As I've been saying since I joined, if you wouldn't write it for free, you shouldn't be writing it just to get paid. I don't say this because I don't think people should be compensated for what they do, I'm just saying that my feeling is that money being the only reason people are contributing to Steemit is a recipe for disaster.

I'm a new steemer. I am working on my intro and expect to post it this weekend. I've probably spent way too much time wording , and prepping it. I'm kind of a perfectionist that way. I was encouraged to start steemit by a freind who just got into it. He spouted praises constantly about the money that could be made, but I was more focused on the exposure to my store and a repressed desire to write creatively. Once I get rolling , I hope I'll be able to stop long enough to eat :-)

Excellent article, thank you for writing this. People seem to lose sight of the underlying principle that this platform represents. Most assuredly it has its flaws and undercurrent of manipulation from a number of sources... but let us all remember, nothing like this exists, this is a first. And all pioneering endeavors throughout history are fraught with difficulty and turmoil. Let us hope that these issues will simply be a small bump, remembered and learned from.
No pain..no gain.

The only problems that exist here are created by us. We are both the hero and the villain.

If we can catch the issues like these early they can be comparmentalized and extinguished. I don't want to just survive here I want to thrive.

An excellent post, and every point you make is spot-on. Do the things mentioned in this article, and you will find your audience. With an audience success will come.

I have followers who I can almost always count on for an upvote, and sometimes a comment. In turn, I regularly go through the posts of the people I follow and upvote and comment on them.

I also go through the "new posts" section, usually once a day, and find some gems from authors here who are new (or new to me) and upvote the ones I find interesting. We often end up following each other.

Engagement is almost as important here as original, quality writing.

And, yes, for God's sake, don't get involved in the drama. Those posts can be amusing (and even informative) to read, but don't contribute to them. You don't want to risk your reputation. It's too hard to build, and too easily broken.

The Steemprentice channel on chat is an excellent resource. It wasn't around when I first started writing here, and I was left to figure out things on my own, including analyzing posts that did well, WHY they did well, who had hundreds of followers, HOW they got them, and even how to upload images to this site and cash out my Steem Dollars. I figured it all out on my own. If Steemprentice had been around then, the learning curve might not have been so steep. Thank goodness I'm already a working freelance writer (and have been for years), and know some basic HTML, or the curve would have been even steeper.

Make use of Steemprentice. They're here to help you, so you don't have to struggle to learn all of these things on your own.

The diversity at steemprentice is great. We really have all bases covered.

Thank you! I'm always tentative of touting myself to others, so the praise is very much appreciated and made me smile. :)

I'd love to have a little more financial support to reward the mentors for sacrificing their time and efforts. Even though it's not about the money it's nice to be able to give such rewards. Up to now the SD's have gone towards the mentees, specifically for those that are progressing their skills, but haven't had that first post that 'pops.'

I know what it's like to 'slip through the cracks,' especially when new here and how much little rewards can do to maintain motivations. Anyhoo, I'm babbling now, lol.

I couldn't agree more. I actually went back and re-read my introductory post, and I got that same feeling of cautious optimism and joy at having a platform to call my own. I also rekindled that excitement I felt at being a part of something brand new. This is great advice, man. Once again, you hit it out of the park.

These groups are awesome ideas. They need more help and awareness from the community. I could care less if this post made a dime but I really want to see the community step up and help support these initiatives.

I wish I'd taken more time to look around the platform and learn the norms before posting my intro, I was just more concerned about the tech side and if I could post successfully. Then I saw articles and other intros topping $1000. Nonetheless one of my earliest posts is about staying on here because it's a free blog that is ad free, and that's a gift. I'm in it for the long haul even if the money side goes to rock bottom if for no other reason than to not pay webhosting on sites that are more creative than income producing for me. I forward three domains here now actually for different projects.

Thanks for making me take that trip down memory lane. I just checked my first post and it's funny to see that I linked several articles that helped me learn markdown and were useful for getting started, from @ash, @steemychicken1, and @andrarchy ... it's great to see that I feel the exact same way still, although admittedly Steemit brought the poet back out of me. I've been trying since that day in July to help others chill out about rewards and financial gain and just focus on community.

In this two month old's opinion it's blossomed beautifully, and the current projects helping newer users is a testament to how it's only gotten stronger here... and more popcorn-y ;)

Steemit seems to have a funny way of answering questions without having to ask, thanks to articles like yours. This site basically fell into my lap the other day...and I think I'll just continue to let things simply fall into place. Good post! As a veteran (lol, ~4 months makes me a vet) I agree that Steemit should be reevaluated often.

re: engagement: Commenting on other people's posts is great for the site and good for you too. Getting to know other people here means you get to see the good stuff and others get to see your good stuff. I have followed many people after just curiously clicking their name on one of their comments on one of my posts.

Lol as far as the 4 months goes it's like dog years in the universe of Steemit. We consume so much knowledge and grow so fast here it's hard to imagine it's only been a few months.

Drama promotes decay, not growth.

That is a light bulb going on in my head right now. OMG, an idea I've never had before. One of the things I appreciate most about your writing and approach is that it's clear you intend to connect and are willing to reveal your heart. I'm aiming there, now, but wasn't at first. Steemit has helped me be more honest as a writer.

When I wrote my first blog post I was biting my nails in an attempt to not offend some imaginary aggressor. I was trying to live up to an inner vision of perfection. I had thoughts like "I promise I won't waste your time." I was intrigued by the social angle, but was unsure how conversations would happen. Mostly, I hoped no one would be randomly mean to me and that faceless strangers would pour money on me and sing my praises without my having to rub any elbows. What changed that was the caliber of person who I started to meet. I think there's a type who is drawn to Steemit and it happens to be my favorite kind of person. Now, I see posts as messages rather than products. I owe all that personal growth to Steemit.

You know that's what attracted me to here.

Everything is written as a means to sell something most places. Here people seem real. Even if I don't like them or their writing I can appreciate that. I respect that.

I'm really new to writing so I feel like I have a lot of room to grow. I'm finding I love it. If I'm not honest then this is just a "job" I'll learn to hate.
