As I've been saying since I joined, if you wouldn't write it for free, you shouldn't be writing it just to get paid. I don't say this because I don't think people should be compensated for what they do, I'm just saying that my feeling is that money being the only reason people are contributing to Steemit is a recipe for disaster.

I agree.

Let's curb stomp that idea.

As long as we have support groups in place we're headed in the right direction.

Like your name by the way, I'm a Brandon as well lol.

Thanks for the read.

I'm a new steemer. I am working on my intro and expect to post it this weekend. I've probably spent way too much time wording , and prepping it. I'm kind of a perfectionist that way. I was encouraged to start steemit by a freind who just got into it. He spouted praises constantly about the money that could be made, but I was more focused on the exposure to my store and a repressed desire to write creatively. Once I get rolling , I hope I'll be able to stop long enough to eat :-)

Dang. I wrote my intro in about five minutes and only spell-checked it. That could explain things.

Need some help?

Join us in the chat in the #steemprentice channel.

I spent some time there last night and came away a bit less ignorant. I've definitely got a lot to learn and will be back.

Well, don't be a stranger man. I got your back.

Just like anything . You get out of it what you put in.

It's addicting. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Come see your fellow steemians in the chats.

I don't mind an inbox.

Feel free to PM me your link when you're done. I'm always here to help.

Thank you. Will do

Excellent article, thank you for writing this. People seem to lose sight of the underlying principle that this platform represents. Most assuredly it has its flaws and undercurrent of manipulation from a number of sources... but let us all remember, nothing like this exists, this is a first. And all pioneering endeavors throughout history are fraught with difficulty and turmoil. Let us hope that these issues will simply be a small bump, remembered and learned from.
No pain..no gain.

The only problems that exist here are created by us. We are both the hero and the villain.

If we can catch the issues like these early they can be comparmentalized and extinguished. I don't want to just survive here I want to thrive.

Thanks for the WONDERFUL comment. I'm following you just on that alone.

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

An excellent post, and every point you make is spot-on. Do the things mentioned in this article, and you will find your audience. With an audience success will come.

I have followers who I can almost always count on for an upvote, and sometimes a comment. In turn, I regularly go through the posts of the people I follow and upvote and comment on them.

I also go through the "new posts" section, usually once a day, and find some gems from authors here who are new (or new to me) and upvote the ones I find interesting. We often end up following each other.

Engagement is almost as important here as original, quality writing.

And, yes, for God's sake, don't get involved in the drama. Those posts can be amusing (and even informative) to read, but don't contribute to them. You don't want to risk your reputation. It's too hard to build, and too easily broken.

The Steemprentice channel on chat is an excellent resource. It wasn't around when I first started writing here, and I was left to figure out things on my own, including analyzing posts that did well, WHY they did well, who had hundreds of followers, HOW they got them, and even how to upload images to this site and cash out my Steem Dollars. I figured it all out on my own. If Steemprentice had been around then, the learning curve might not have been so steep. Thank goodness I'm already a working freelance writer (and have been for years), and know some basic HTML, or the curve would have been even steeper.

Make use of Steemprentice. They're here to help you, so you don't have to struggle to learn all of these things on your own.

Just kidding.

I agree. I had to learn most on my own and I reached out in the chats for help. Luckily a few great people helped me out.

The diversity at steemprentice is great. We really have all bases covered.

@sykochica deserves an award for starting the group.

Thank you! *blush

Yes, @sykochica, I agree with @kryptik. Starting the group was a fantastic idea, and you deserve tons of kudos for it. It's helping a lot of new Steemers, and that is a good thing.

Also, @kryptik, I'm way out of the loop on modern pop culture and slang. I have no idea what the guy in your meme is trying to say. Lol! I can guess, but that's about it. Anyway, it's cool. I know you're a nice guy. :)

Thank you! I'm always tentative of touting myself to others, so the praise is very much appreciated and made me smile. :)

I'd love to have a little more financial support to reward the mentors for sacrificing their time and efforts. Even though it's not about the money it's nice to be able to give such rewards. Up to now the SD's have gone towards the mentees, specifically for those that are progressing their skills, but haven't had that first post that 'pops.'

I know what it's like to 'slip through the cracks,' especially when new here and how much little rewards can do to maintain motivations. Anyhoo, I'm babbling now, lol.

Thank you @stephmckenzie :)

@kryptik Loved the part "I bring popcorn not a pitch fork" great post!

Great post. Couldn't resist to resteem, cheers.
Tim

I couldn't agree more. I actually went back and re-read my introductory post, and I got that same feeling of cautious optimism and joy at having a platform to call my own. I also rekindled that excitement I felt at being a part of something brand new. This is great advice, man. Once again, you hit it out of the park.

I think it would provide a lot of value for people to go back and re-read their first post. It's a great way to feel optimistic and positive about things when you have doubts or are feeling jaded.

Great comment as always!

I very much enjoyed reading this. Self-pitying steemit suicide note, spot on and a tad funny all wrapped into one.

Glad you enjoyed it!

These groups are awesome ideas. They need more help and awareness from the community. I could care less if this post made a dime but I really want to see the community step up and help support these initiatives.

How did you feel when you first came to SteemIt?

I wish I'd taken more time to look around the platform and learn the norms before posting my intro, I was just more concerned about the tech side and if I could post successfully. Then I saw articles and other intros topping $1000. Nonetheless one of my earliest posts is about staying on here because it's a free blog that is ad free, and that's a gift. I'm in it for the long haul even if the money side goes to rock bottom if for no other reason than to not pay webhosting on sites that are more creative than income producing for me. I forward three domains here now actually for different projects.

You know, I've never even thought about that angle.

That's a really awesome idea.

I lurked for a couple days before I made the leap. I remember thinking, "should I?".

I'm glad I did. You know for years I was on Reddit and didn't say two words. Bring me here and I can't shut up.

Thanks for making me take that trip down memory lane. I just checked my first post and it's funny to see that I linked several articles that helped me learn markdown and were useful for getting started, from @ash, @steemychicken1, and @andrarchy ... it's great to see that I feel the exact same way still, although admittedly Steemit brought the poet back out of me. I've been trying since that day in July to help others chill out about rewards and financial gain and just focus on community.

In this two month old's opinion it's blossomed beautifully, and the current projects helping newer users is a testament to how it's only gotten stronger here... and more popcorn-y ;)

  ·  9 years ago (edited)

True that! Us two month olds have to stick together ;)

I posted as a regular guy before. Now I post as a confident writer.

I can't thank SteemIt enough for that.

Steemprentice really deserves a lot more attention then what it is getting.

I agree. We are an extremely positive, supportive, close-knit group. It's like a small town community.

Thank you for the "heads up" on a few things. I am new. I too did not come to seek my fortune. Steemit seems to have a funny way of answering questions without having to ask, thanks to articles like yours. This site basically fell into my lap the other day...and I think I'll just continue to let things simply fall into place. Being yourself seems to be very important here...and I think I'm good at that. Have a great day.

It's important in all aspects of life. A lot of people struggle with accepting Steemit because they feel it's too good to be true.

Feel free to come join us in the chat and say hi.

Well Well Well.

"I might not even make 2 cents, but I could care less because I am here to give my 2 cents.".

Wow.
You got a new follower thats for sure.

You like that line? ;) Lol.

Thank you!

A follow is the ultimate display of respect to me. I will no doubt be checking your work shortly.

You as well @mindfreak

Good post! As a veteran (lol, ~4 months makes me a vet) I agree that Steemit should be reevaluated often.

re: engagement: Commenting on other people's posts is great for the site and good for you too. Getting to know other people here means you get to see the good stuff and others get to see your good stuff. I have followed many people after just curiously clicking their name on one of their comments on one of my posts.

  ·  9 years ago (edited)

I've started following that trend myself. I follow great commenters.

Lol as far as the 4 months goes it's like dog years in the universe of Steemit. We consume so much knowledge and grow so fast here it's hard to imagine it's only been a few months.

Your upvote means a lot to me man.

I really appreciate it.

Agreed! Most of the people I follow I originally found in the comments sections, not so much the feeds.

Great read! Come mid November I will have a ton more time to lend a helping hand if needed on your projects.

They aren't "mine" lol. @sykochica and @acidyo deserve all of the credit.

kryptik - you were one of the first people I met on SteemIt. You are doing god's work :) We'll be in touch about the other things shortly ;-)

Thanks man.

You are bringing exciting things to this platform with SteemVerify. Confidentiality is a necessity for some people in different parts of the world.

I'm happy to see we are both adding value to our community.

Great post man! Glad to see you're not tired of my questions....yet. We country folk have to grind, its a way of life 'round here.

You help me as much as I help you.

Thanks for that man.

It is hard not to get caught up in some of the drama. LOL. I try to stay out but some of it is kind of interesting.

Like I said leave the pitchfork at home. It doesn't help to have a dog in the fight but it's a great substitute for TV.

Excellent post and great advices :)

Thanks! I was wondering where you've been!

How's school buddy?

Loved this post!

Thank you!

I love my community.

I love food too. I'm going to have to check out your work.

Well, the engagement is what I am looking for, not money. But so far the results in that department are a bit on the low side. :-D
Do keep trying, and well using other means to find it. And now, that I have a keyboard, I am ready to take on the world.

Lol I feel your pain. I use a tablet for everything Steemit.

There is plenty of posts promoting user engagement but them seem to always not do great. I don't know what the deal is.

Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Well, my translations would fare easier. And I'll probably be able to redo that big post that got destroyed by the bug, before I could post it.

hello, good point :)

Hello, thanks for reading!

Can I still get a reward at projectnewbie? :p

If you find a new author you sure can ;)

Great post! 100% agreed, I look at any money made on here as a bonus for doing all the things I would normally be doing on other forms of social media. Plus you get the added bonus of reaching a far wider audience as this platform builds.

Drama promotes decay, not growth.

That is a light bulb going on in my head right now. OMG, an idea I've never had before. One of the things I appreciate most about your writing and approach is that it's clear you intend to connect and are willing to reveal your heart. I'm aiming there, now, but wasn't at first. Steemit has helped me be more honest as a writer.

When I wrote my first blog post I was biting my nails in an attempt to not offend some imaginary aggressor. I was trying to live up to an inner vision of perfection. I had thoughts like "I promise I won't waste your time." I was intrigued by the social angle, but was unsure how conversations would happen. Mostly, I hoped no one would be randomly mean to me and that faceless strangers would pour money on me and sing my praises without my having to rub any elbows. What changed that was the caliber of person who I started to meet. I think there's a type who is drawn to Steemit and it happens to be my favorite kind of person. Now, I see posts as messages rather than products. I owe all that personal growth to Steemit.

You know that's what attracted me to here.

Everything is written as a means to sell something most places. Here people seem real. Even if I don't like them or their writing I can appreciate that. I respect that.

I'm really new to writing so I feel like I have a lot of room to grow. I'm finding I love it. If I'm not honest then this is just a "job" I'll learn to hate.

Three cheers for the positive things here.

We are a revolution in the ways of thinking and connection.

A penny for your thoughts!

Thank you kind sir!

You're a great soul man. I know we all "don't exist" but I feel like you make our group a better place.

Thanks for the continued support.

What we experience is our shared thoughts; our very own creations.
