Homesteading With My Sons - My Steemit Birthday

in steemit •  7 years ago

I'm super stoked that it's my Steemit Birthday today :) Yes, it's been one year since I was birthed through the great Steem womb.

It's been an amazing year so far, and I could never have had so much success here if it wasn't for YOU! Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for being interested in our family's life! Thank you for your kind words, and your generosity, I've written about it a couple times now that YOU all have helped our family through some pretty tough times. Through the Steem blockchain we are finally able to have a bit of financial breathing room.

So what better way to celebrate than show you all what my beautiful sons and I have been up to in high harvest time. They bring so much life, and are the greatest helpers I could ever ask for...

Kiedis, 7 years old. He's my best and most enthusiastic gardener, but he's a bit on the clumsy side, shhh don't tell him I said so. He's so great at planting and harvesting, yet he squishes a lot of plants too hahahahhahaa. Of course I never say anything mean to him about it, I wouldn't want to discourage him from helping me do one of the most important jobs in our family.

IMG_8138.JPG

I need him so much, look how he can get into all the tight places!

IMG_8134.JPG

This was Kiedis' haul, great job Son!

IMG_8143.JPG

Next I'd like to introduce you to our eldest son, Eddie who is 13.

IMG_8147.JPG

Eddie is so amazing especially with the chickens. He spends a lot of time with them, has names for almost all, and in general refers to them as "his babes". Here he is filling up their water, again, they go through quite a bit of it in the summer time. He also helps me with carrying the huge bags of feed, straw, and cleaning out their coop. I don't know what I'd do without him, and neither would his babes. Every day he catches them, carries them all around, brings them in the house, and lets them roost on his arm. When he gets home from school the first thing he does, before even saying hi to me, is go and see how his babes are doing.

Eddie and Don King, in the house...as usual.

Eddie and Mr. Pendock, or as Ed calls him "My Big Man".

And last but certainly not least, our youngest Son, Stryder, who just turned 6.

We're both pretty excited at the amount of tomatoes he harvested today! He's super great at getting into all the tight places in my big greenhouse jungle.

Beyond Vegetables...

Another big job that we've been working at lately is harvesting all the seeds we need for next year to ensure that Food Stays Free.

Spinach.

That's a lot of seed hey? We will be mailing a bunch out to friends and family to make sure their food stays free too. Another reason to collect seeds, for SHARING!

IMG_8144.JPG

Radish.

IMG_8166.JPG

That's a lot of seed from one radish hey? Well, that wasn't even the whole plant! I still have about half left to still get the seeds out of, but why rush things right?

Thank you so much for witnessing a piece of my heart, the largest piece...my beautiful, incredibly talented children. Thank you also for being on Steemit, it's only just begun...our amazing journey here, a social media platform that is literally changing lives for the better every single day.

Actually @lyndsaybowes, it is us who should be thanking you for letting all of us into your family. Without your sharing and inspiration, this community is uplifted and we all benefit. On a personal side, I think you for the guidance you gave me.

Happy Steemit BDay...it looks like you had a wonderful year and really helped steemit along. I hope your year 2 is as good, if not better.

Thanks for being on here.

That is sooooo kind and sweet of you to say! :) I've been enjoying getting to know you too! :) :) :) :) Thank you O:) (Angel)!!

You, Are amazing Miss Bowes!

I am aiming to have my Veggie garden looking like that within a season!

I have to limit everything to pots though, thats why I have a majority of the plants as my medicinal herbs! <3

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAKE DAY for Steemit!

What a wonderful day that was. And I am honoured to know you <3

Ooooh yeah working with pots is no walk in the park if you're trying to grow a tonne of food. Mmmmm medicinal herbs though... yummmy :) <3 <3 <3

I'm super happy and honoured to have crossed paths with you, and so glad you're back here, it was too quiet in that #truth room I tell ya!!!

hey, I don't know know if I have ever gotten all the way here to your blog before.
We know each other only over there on TP's meme posts.
lol

Congrats on the everything I suppose, great looking crop of kids, great looking crop of tomatoes, and great looking seeds.

I am worried about the sustainability of what I do now.

There's just too much advantage for me to dedicate myself to making sure I have a good medicine crop, and where I live veges are cheap.
And I could be having (and do quite a bit) non commercially grown ones too. But these crazy peasants use heaps of chemicals on everything

so I eat tons of sprouts these days, that I make of course.
but that's a lot of seed.

Now, during summer I have been doing only lentils and soy/mung beans, but they are 50% of my diet, taken with my eleven secret herbs and spices, and my marijuana olive oil
delicious too

Hi @spaingaroo! Thanks for the lovely comment, yes I remember you from when I first joined the truth room on Discord too, haven't seen you there lately though.

It sounds like you are living a wonderful life, getting as sustainable as possible, looking for more ways, and supporting Local too! So, do you live in Spain then?

Yes, I live in the mountains of inland Andalusia, in a place with spring water and a lush river flat where heaps of people grow their own veggies and there are nut and fruit trees galore.

As well as olives of course.

I wrote about the olives recently, but I should write about all the free food that I do get, or could.
I used to pick up walnuts on my walks, and there are many many trees. just picking up the ones that fall onto the public thoroughfare is a good supply.
(all these things are seasonal of course)
There are also pomegranate trees galore, and nobody bothers to pick them, and a fruit that needs cooking called Membrillo, and another that produces a really strange fruit, called Caquis, that also usually mostly go to waste.
They are a real job to use and to eat, and so people just don't bother now.

But they are important source of vit C in winter when the trucks stop running.

The almonds are commercial crops so not for me to take, as are the cherries and peaches and apricots and similar.

And most families have a veggie plot that one of the grand-dads tends.
when those guys die, I am not sure what is going to happen to many of them.

The over the road neighbour sometimes brings me a bag of stuff, as she did the other day after I was raided, she came and knocked on the door, with a big bag of a mix of peaches and tomatoes.
All from someone's market garden.

good on her, didn't quite make up for my loss, but I am still eating peaches now.

haha
I highly recommend it as a place to live though

Oooh my goodness, it sounds like absolute HEAVEN!!!! Thank you so much for that vivid description. I have to come visit one day. And I'm so sorry hearing you were raided, that is not cool at all...

Congrats on your anniversary here on Steemit!
And it's nice to see your beautiful children.

Thank you so much Linda, it's sure been great getting to know you, and what you're all about too. You're a very brave woman who I admire :) <3 <3

Happy birthday Lyndsay! Great to see the important skills you are passing on to your children. Keep it up! :)

Hey so good to see you my friend xo :) Been waiting to hear a jam from you!

Hey, I know, I've been slacking in that department. I'll get it together soon!

Happy steem birthday Lindsay! I've been following you for several months now and I love all of the great content you bring to the platform. Thank you so much for giving us a glimpse into your life and for sharing your experiences! I love our community here on Steemit and I love all of the interesting people and content that has brought us all together. Steem on!!!! 💕

I'm glad to hear you've also been having a great time here, it'll sure be nice when the rest of the party gets here eh? We gotta get em off FB!! :) :) :)

What wonderful boys you have!! And handsome too! You must be very proud. I know my 7 year old is a lot of help in the garden, especially in the strawberry patch!! Happy steemiversary!!!

Thank you TiredMama :) Yes, I am soo proud as you must be too. HAHAA ooh the strawberry patch, always BARE here :) :) :)

Congratulations Lyndsay, on your one year steemit birthday.

It is so good that your boys are so keen to help in the garden.

Mine helped when they were younger, but the interest waned as they became teenagers. I'm grateful the youngest one is still interested. I do feel it is so important to pass on knowledge of how to grow your own food.

Your teens will be happy later in life to have that invaluable experience under their belts. Self worth comes from doing things by ourselves, being able to grow and understanding how to feed yourself is huge. Hugs to you and your fam, I'm so glad we met!

Hi Lyndsay thanks for this. My children probably wouldn't admit it now, but as you say they will be glad they have some knowledge of growing later in life.

I wish the schools would pick up on this sort of learning about growing and food production as well. The schools here in the UK don't do any of this now.

Just an update while I am here on our surplus eggs and veg that I mentioned a few weeks back. Having a Food is Free table at our gate proved difficult as it is half a mile from our house. But we have found a better way I think of passing on our surplus. We have recently met two local families with young children who have fallen on hard times due to redundancy. We are supplying them with eggs and any surplus veg each week.

I know it might sound a bit awkward and Victorian. But it seems to work well, and it is good to see the surplus food go to a good home.

Thank you for inspiring me to do this.

OOh I LOVE IT!!!!!!! That really brings a smile to my face hearing how you are helping those families, and such beautiful produce and eggs, so much better for them than grocery store crap, or even worse, the stuff at the food bank. You're too sweet!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Sharing is so much better than wasting or throwing away food. Maybe a cool T-shirt slogan... Share don't dump

I love it!!!!!! We'll hand them out to grocery store CEOs!

The best kinds of helpers are those we raised! They are learning first hand about where food comes from and how to be generous. These are important life lessons. Kudos to you.

Thank you so much CeciCastor <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

@lyndsaybowes congratulations! It's like you're mining beetcoin instead of bitcoin :D You're blessed with a great family and you're a key component in the Steemit family. Glad to know you!

Thank you very much <3

Happy cake day!

Thank you very much @kryptokayden, hey did you ever end up getting into that serial flaggers mind to find out his inner workings? :) :)

Awesome post!!!:) Love getting to see the whole family, and it is great to see you have been here for one whole year! I wouldn't even know what to do wth all the vegetables you guys get lol

Thanks Dillon~ and trust me, they go fast with our family of 5. Eddie eats as much as Brendan and I'm not far behind LOL!!! Also it takes a lot of tomatoes to make sauce with too. Every year we hardly make it into the winter without being out of everything already. I have faith we'll have enough potatoes this time to last through winter.

Do you guys grow anything there, or will you be?

Oh damn!! Well good for you guys:) very very healthy living, and I love it!! My mom has a garden that I steal zucchini out of, but I was gonna actually go chantrell mushroom picking and vlog it, because my grandpa has them all over his property! I'm sure you guys get them in canada too:)

Oooh Yum yum yum, that'll be a great vlog!!

Happy Steemit Birthday. You have made great progress.

Yes, persistence is paying off, thank you so much, and it's been a real pleasure getting to know you GardenGirl!

Likewise my friend

Look at all the things you've accomplished in a year and look at how much you grew this summer! It's an honor to be part of your life here on Steemit!

And such handsome boys too - some of your best work!

Yes, I have certainly been BLESSED this summer on Steemit, and of course my biggest blessing in life is my sons...and my husband XOXOxoxoXOXXOXO. I'm equally honoured to be a part of your life, a witness to your amazing writing, and photography, we'll have to have a smoke together one day hey Winston? :) :) :)

That would be fantastic!

Happy Steemit bday #1! Love what you guys contribute. Sorry im a day late but the Bowes family is always on my mind and that brings many smiles :)

No worries on being a day late Michael! :) I always love hearing from you, and wouldn't it be grand to all hang out one day? :) :)

We will someday. Nova Scotia is so beautiful I wanna go there. Ill come when its summer tho!

Yeah, I would definitely recommend coming in the summer, or the fall, we have a beautiful long fall season, doesn't really get cold here til the end of January <3
