Cutting my 'career' short on Steemit was not my intention

in steemit •  8 years ago

I seemed to be gathering steem on here. I was doing well and enjoying my journey. That is, until I posted this:

https://steemit.com/challenge30/@michelle.gent/open-letter-to-steemcleaners

That stopped the momentum dead.

Nope, I'm not complaining, I'm getting readers here and recognition from @screenname on a regular basis, getting mentioned here: https://steemit.com/curation/@screenname/the-daily-tribune-most-undervalued-posts-of-jan-13---part-ii

And it's still all good. I hadn't joined this in order to make a living (I thought it may have been possible at one time, but it wasn't essential to my participation) I joined because I really believed this would make a difference in the blogging world. I still do, but perhaps not for me any more.

I pointed out one flaw in the activities of one group and there you go - ostracised, ignored and therefore, rewarded less than I had been before.

Still, as I said, my journey has been rewarding. I've made loads of friends and contacts and I'm curating now, too. My blogs are not making anything like they were and so they will now be taking a back-seat.

No more stories or articles from me, I'll do my writing elsewhere.

Three hours work to create a crafted, edited and considered post, as well as sourcing photos appropriate for the subject, to gain 200 upvotes, but just $3 isn't a good investment of my time.

Those that do have a large stake and therefore a big voice in this and cannot take criticism when it's pointed in your direction, take heed, driving away people that have invested their time, talent and creativity in this platform won't do you any good in the long run. To develop and grow anything, mistakes are made and if taking the huff is your way of dealing with the criticism, rather than learning and altering, then you'll come unstuck.

I don't have much invested in this - $300 right at the beginning - so I can walk away and start again without a backward glance and no regrets. A week later and that may not have been the case - phew.

I suppose this is a reverse-introduceyourself.

I'm sorry to hear about your quitting the site. I don't like to hear that your expectation of a certain level of rewards lead you to later disappointment. This is certainly something I will take under advisement when making future platform decisions.

One thing that we're all going to have to cope with on a truly open platform are haters, trolls, and jerks. They're going to be omnipresent on the internet, and even moreso here as we somewhat cater to the underserved by the more moderated parts of the web.

I wish you well and continued success with your writing.

Best,
-jp

Oh no, I'm not quitting.

I didn't have any level of expectation of anything. Remember we spoke about it at SteemFest?

I think it is the trolls and jerks that have coloured my vision on this. The best way to deal with trolls and jerks (I've not met any haters on here) is to stop interacting with them. The way I was interacting is through my writing and posting on here. So, leaving that part out, there won't be any chance of encountering the trolls and jerks.

I'm enjoying the curation part, mentoring new users, hopefully steering them in the right directions and so avoid the aforementioned trolls, jerks and haters and make their experience that little bit better.

Thanks for your well-wishes, meeting you and the rest of the people at SteemFest was one of my highlights of last year - and it was an awesome year!

I'm still going to be around, and I'm on a couple of the chat channels too. See you around <3

I was thinking today, now Christmas is out of the way, we need to have our next UK Steemit Meet Up. Let's see if we can come up with some solutions or fresh ideas over a pint .

We certainly do!

I think @sneak will be open to any new ideas we come up with too. He may even be able to get over for a drink one day - open invitation @sneak!

Right, well we need to get chatting with the other UK peeps, find out who wants to come and plan a location.

Can't wait!

🍺🍻Cheers to that!🍺

Sorry to here this. I liked reading your stories and realling totally understand how you feel. I have gone for seriously addicted to merely interested in Steemit. I do think it has a future but something is not smelling right here these days. I hope it changes soon.

I do think it has a future but something is not smelling right here these days. I hope it changes soon.

Could you elaborate?

For me,
A bit to much Facebook the last month, but i think it will pass.

Just that it's gone from an wonderful community vibe with lots of sharing to petty bickering to schoolyard bullying to outright hostility and threats. There are so many interesting people who've stopped posting and the newbies are not being encouraged and supported like I used to see.

That's pretty normal and expected as we grow from a very small community to many thousands of mostly-strangers. We're working on a number of different ways to bring back that sort of vibe on a smaller scale within sections of the larger site.

A real shame. For me Steemit is a 5-7 year project. It was never about making $zillions from day one. The money making was a total bonus. Steemit and Steem hasn't even scratched the surface. Ask me in 2021 if I still believe in the technology. Can I suggest that you take time out do the things you want and come back at a later date. We will all still be here. Stephen

I agree. It's never been about short-term for me either.

I'm a little too-outspoken sometimes. I freely admit that and I suppose I knew that I risked the support I'd been getting, but I also felt it needed to be said.

I probably upset some people with my opinions, but hey, if someone can upset you by making observations, perhaps you knew, deep-down that the comments were right?

I'm keeping this account open, just not posting my writing on here. I need to concentrate more on writing my books anyway, I've been neglecting my characters.

I give you 2 weeks and you will be back. We'll be all here waiting with open arms. Stephen

I curate stories in #fiction and I'm not giving up on curating from this account. I'll still be here. I just won't put my writing up here.

It's a personal choice and one I'm saddened to make.

I think that Steemit is still in the infancy stage. The rewards people were getting at the start seemed over the top to me. I know you can't compare it directly with ad-supported sites, but something has to set what Steem should be worth. I feel I'm getting a reasonable return for my blogging. There are some trolls, but I try to avoid them.

It's a shame if you feel it's not worth sharing your writing here. It ought to be the perfect place for it.

Yes, it is still in its infancy and that's the main reason I'm staying. I'm not here for the rewards, honestly :) The problem is, rewards is exactly what gets your name up and out there, into Trending, Hot etc.

A reasonable return for blogging was more than I asked for or expected. I got nothing on Facebook, I get nothing on my blog.

I also got the message, the unspoken one, that because I spoke out about something, it all ended there. Take a look at my blog. I went from the occasional $50+ to the regular -$1 but +100upvoted post. The block-voting is an awesome and revolutionary device, it helps curation guilds and new users alike, but in the hands of someone that has an axe to grind, it can quickly put users off.

I don't need to blog on here, I should be spending the majority of my time writing and that's what I'm going back to. If I don't feel my work is valued, I don't need to stick around. I've been writing for a good long while and though I've not yet made it 'BIG', I do have a number of followers, as the graph on that post shows.

It's a fact that you will only make real money if one of the few whales likes you. Even with a few thousand SP I can't gift people much with a vote. I've been lucky to do as well as I have, but I won't be giving up the day job

Haha! Same here!
