So are upvoting and flagging currently not anonymous? On Hacker News, they certainly are. And there's both downvoting (for posts that don't contribute) and flagging (for spam and other posts that violate community standards). That makes the most sense to me. I'm new on Steem, but I've adopted the policy of flagging all "upvote/follow" spam. Especially when it appears multiple times in a thread.

Flagging is not anonymous. Under the payout it shows your name with a - instead of a +. I got a troll who flagged all my articles because I flagged what was a copy paste video that was very sexist and racist. Besides the content it should've been flagged.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Damn, that is arguably a design defect. Because it facilitates retaliation, and flagging wars. I've only flagged blatant spam, but now I'll think twice.
