Posts Vs. Commenting? Which One Is More Important?

Posts vs Comments 2.png

Yesterday a Steemian wrote in the comment section that he is a beginner here and that he is a bit confused because on the platform itself and on youtube people are saying different things about how to get successful on Steemit.

Or let us say: How to start the journey right, getting more followers, and of course bigger financial rewards.

Is it better for a beginner to focus first on writing articles like this one, or to focus more on commenting? This question I will try to handle here.

And again, there is no one best rule.
What I am sharing with you is based on my experience and observation.

Familiar with blogging.png

This was my starting point. I was already familiar with blogging and writing that's why I focused directly on publishing my content. It was not that someone told me I was just led by my skills.

In this stage, I researched on this platform and also on youtube what other people are saying about some Steemit Hacks. ;) We all are looking for them, right?

I found out that commenting would bring more rewards and followers than publishing your own content. I tried it out.

Indeed comments brought me some new followers, but I didn't get higher rewards compared to my articles. I have to say that I tried to summon the rewards of many comments, not only from one compared to one article.

In my case, I can say yes, I got more followers via commenting but the rewards were sobering. But again this was in my case, it has not to be in your situation. Maybe I was writing not great enough comments.

Some Steemian told me that he gained an attractive amount via comment rewards and also more follower compared to his articles.

Focus on what now?.png

I can't give you the best solution; this is something everyone has to find out for himself. But there is something I can definitely tell you; something that will work for sure. Curious? You have to wait a bit. First, I want to show you something more I observed here.

I recognized that both actions, publishing articles and commenting brought two different types of followers out.

friends.png

Through meaningful comments, you build faster friendships here. Through these comments, conversation happens, and some of them will be shifted into the steemitchat where the conversation continues.

Through comments, you make connections on a deeper basis.

For example: When a user sees you always bringing meaningful comments, he gets curious about you and upvotes you by time. Some upvotes arise just through sympathy.

This includes me also. When I see a person is commenting a lot, I am willing to reward her or him for that. Many authors are doing that. Through comments, you're making friends, and this is so important.

Follower.png

Through your published content you attract real followers.
What do I mean by that?

People follow you because they have an interest in what you are sharing. They are interested in your voice. They believe they can get something valuable from you. This could be an advice, how they can make something better, or getting interesting information about a specific topic. It's like they are getting something to eat.

This is more on a professional basis.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it is always like that, far away with that.

These people don't want to miss a post of you because they expect something valuable for themselves. Something they can implement into their own lives.

Let me try to explain it in another way.

Friendship Brand.png

Through meaningful comments and everything that happens out of that, you are building friendships.

Through your quality posts, you are building your brand.

Imagine an author looks on your blog because he saw you always posting great comments, but he sees no real structure in your blog. But he finds you sympathetic, and that's why he/she will follow you to support you in time which is great!

The other case is that he/she sees your blog and see that you are writing about something he is really interested in. He reads one post and discovers that he can learn a lot of you. He starts following you because of your skills in a particular topic.

Am I saying its always that way? NO! Far Away with that.
I am just trying to draw a picture for a better understanding.

What is more importnat now.png

I have a clear opinion about that.

My answer is BOTH!
And this is the best case, the best combination but also the hardest!

You need friends, who support you but you also need a brand which attractst followers. I would say that a brand is a bit stronger for the long run.

But it's hard to do both equally commenting a lot and writing interesting contributions, puhhh tough work. But this is, in my opinion, the best combination.

I don't know many people, but some people represent this type of user.
@charles1, for example, is one of them in my opinion.

Bildschirmfoto 2017-12-21 um 17.58.10.png

Since June 2017 he is a member here.
Look at his number in the middle. This number represents the total amount of comments you made. He did so far over 13.000 friends.

Then take a look at his feed. I would say he is writing awesome stuff.

I know my opinion is subjective some of you might disagree, and that's fine.

The second example for me is a user who is still no longer active here. But I hope that he will come back one day.

Bildschirmfoto 2017-12-21 um 18.02.34.png

This guy has made a huge climb in a short amount of time, and his last activity in case of publishing is over two months ago and look what he achieved. When he would have done his road the last two months with the same intensity, he would be already on the Steemit moon! But it could also be that he pressed too hard an burned out. I hope not, but it could be.

By the way, he is until now the only one who could fight against me regarding thumbnails in my opinion :D (just kidding)

Conclusion 2.png

Like I said there is no best way or rule to achieve the goal you've set. But we can say that both commenting and posting are essential. Which weight you give to both it's up to you.

But what I would recommend is this:

Start with that where you feel more comfortable with. Don't stress yourself. Play around and see how you find yourself in this ocean. Make some experiments and observe the output. And again don't stress yourself. This site is still young and the fact that you are already here gives you an advantage.

both are important post and comment with quality in itself.

I would say, you already said everything! :D

In my opinion you should have at least 1 post, which should be your introduction, so that the people know who is commenting on their posts.
You should put much effort in you’re introduction and make it interesting.

The problem with just commenting but not posting is, like you mentioned,
The people see your comments, visit your blog and it is empty..
So I think they will nor often decide to follow your blog.
But if there at least 2,3,4 posts which represent your blog, the people will know what they can expect und start to follow you.
When I started I also thought I will build at first a base of followers, so that my post with much effort go into the empty space.
But then I decided just to start also posting.

I think at the beginning you should make a mix of both but concentrate more on comments. The frequency of posts can be a bit lower at first.
If you have enough time, you can also use the first posts for training sessions.

So didn‘t expect, I have something to add before starting this comment and now we‘re here 😁

I follow EVERYONE. People are freaking interesting and there are a shit ton of view points that can be so interesting and hobbies and best is I LOVE DEBATING People and I love it EVEN MORE now that I realized I am NOT ALWAYS RIGHT! Ha Ha Took me to AGE 46 to wake up and realize I could be wrong, most VALUABLE GIFT I EVER recieved. Earth is Flat . NASA Lies. Boston Bombing a HOAX. Our government is a Corporation and EVERYTHING , I think I really mean EVERYTHING is a freaking LIE. Sorry for rant, good comment

Great and detailed comment my friend. thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. :)

Well written! And yeah your thumbnails are really an.eyecatcher :-)

Thank you, my friend :)

@modernpastor Wow, what a great post, found you from @rehan12 I was following him and he #resteemed your post which I will also do to bring awareness to this genuine post. Once again awesome write up and you answered alot of hidden unknowns and just makes me wanna work harder at creating quality content. Thanks again, #HappyHolidays!

Thank you my friend.
I am Happy that you liked it. Also Thank you to @rehan12 for resteeming my post.

Anytime brother!

Some people can write posts as much as they want but won't be seen at all.

I guess you need to do both, but it will be really time consuming to rise up. Unless you are lucky or just awesome enough to catch attention right away, then your path might be paved as well.

I try to post at least once a day but upvote a lot of other people's content. If I still have some time left a write a comment like this here, or maybe two.

I think you are going well that way :)

I definitely agree it's hard to say that one option is better than the other. Both are necessary to be successful here. However in the very beginning I would spend much more of my time on commenting l. I will still post so that if people come to my page and check it they can choose to follow me if they find my material interesting.

The blog page as you say become your brand so Ita important that when people visit your blog that they get a very good overview of what you are all about

Both are so important if you want to build your steemit account or profile.

This cannot be overemphasised

And then, it's also pertinent that you make good quality posts and comments

Thank you for a great post. I only have one question since im pretty new here. What is the point of resteem? I'm not a blogger and have not been writing anything before. I have been leading co workers the last 6 years motivating and teaching tips and tricks. My idea is to use this combined with my hunger for learning about self-improvement so my plan in to comment on good posts, making friends and once or twice post a post about what's on my mind that day!
Have a great day and lovely Christmas
Best regards @everydaycoach

Hey @everdaycoach :)

thanks for your comment.
The Point of resteem is like "sharing" on other platforms like Facebookk. You are resteeming the post you like with your followers.

I hope you have also a great day and also lovely Christmas :)

Yup youre right thank for this write of yours it learns me a lot

Thanks for the advice, I don't understand steemers though. I see quality content get very few few if any upvotes. Then someone just posts a recipe & they're getting hundreds of SBD.

Thank you :)

Both matters if they are have quality in itself.

I enjoy reading posts and replying, bur wen i get a great upvote for a reply, i feel so so good... replys my niche...

thank you, my brother :)

"And again don't stress yourself. This site is still young and the fact that you are already here gives you an advantage." Thank you for this article. I found something I can take.

wow!! @Resteemed

As a person with no previous experience blogging experience I would say comments are more important in the beginning in order to get some exposure and for people to get to know your personality. I'm not saying blogging should be neglected but rather it shouldn't be the primary focus.

great said. thanks for sharing your opinion :)

you are right both are good but i think as a new user creating an awesome content is the best.

I'm always honest, so you can believe me: This article is awesome, stunning! You are showing the experience of an "old hare" (said in German).
When I saw the headline (and it was a question), instantly there were thoughts running through my brain, what my answer could be.
But while reading this post, almost nothing left for me to add.
The only thing I want to add is my definition for success on this platfom:
Success can be measured in payout, but also in true friendship gained.
And the last one is perhaps more importand than the money.

Greetings from Munich!

when i could get red i would get red^^
i never expected a comment like this.

thank you very much for your honor.
and yes, you are right. success is something everyone has to set up for himself.

Greets from Salzburg.

It's fun how you see things in creative perspectives. There was a subtle difference between the followers we typically get, but you were able to magnify that and give a thorough explanation. Now, this got me think as to what type of follower I want.

Hmm, I really love commenting, because it allows me to connect, and since I still haven't figured out what to post, I might stick with more commenting for now. I'm taking your suggestion of not stressing out over this. Lol.

I am glad to hear that.^^ Go your way, it's a good one:)

Both matters if they are have quality in itself.
thanks for sharing...

I think you made a good point here. I personally made more by commenting than posting videos so far. That will eventually change so for now I'm just having fun with it until the right audience arrives :) Greetings!

Absolutely true as you rightly pointed out.
Both commenting and posting are pertinent to building a brand on Steemit.
Long term friendship comes from both and this ensures a sustainable investment as well as follower base too.

That's it my friend :)

I can see myself in everything you post, honestly I am learning a lot and I follow your advice all the time. I also share what I learn here to newbies like me and its a rewarding feeling that I may not give them power up but I gave useful tips and that is something.
At first I bank on commenting since it helped me move up and gain followers and just the other day your topic was frequency of posting I am now starting to do that as well.
But what's important is you are happy with what you are doing, most of the time happiness comes from things that are intangible. I am enjoying this since as you've said you will gain new friends with same interest as yours.
Thank you again for this awesome advice @modernpastor. Resteemed.

in the beginning of the article you have intrigued me intriguingly, so reading, I became more and more absorbed in thinking about the arguments that you reserved for us in the end. But I am pleased and agree that an excellent comment is not bad, but it is important not to forget to share with your readers your thoughts and excellent content. You need to find what works best and share it with your readers. Thanks, I wish a productive day

Exactly, I see it the same way. Comments are powerful, but it's important not to forget your followers and they are waiting for your next post, hoping to find again something valuable.

As someone who's new to blogging and to the steemit platform, I think commenting is where I'm comfortable at.

Being able to observe and understand how others, more experienced bloggers, structure their articles and at the same time interacting with the community and platform is helping slowly to understand better. I guess this would be similar to the metaphor you used about an apple tree in your previous article - "To grow takes time never forget that."

Again I really appreciate the content your putting out here, lots of great tips 👍

I think it is also important to note that before someone starts commenting away, they should have a decent amount of blog content for people to reference. There is a benefit to starting to build relationships, but if you only have two posts, it will be hard for people to decide if they want to follow or not.

My experience so far on steemit has thought me that if you want to get followers who are higher than you, you use comment while if you want to get followers below you or same level, you publish quality posts

it was very useful for me a minnow here thanks a lot for sharing this interesting post

You said it really well !!
its all about building and giving back to the community as well
Both the aspects of stemmit is important whether its post's or comments :) and most importantly i think the consistency

Very good ... it is a pleasure to read.
And I think we all get strange comments sometimes :)

Oh yes, my friend we do ^^

You are welcome :))

Those are nice and reasonable advice's :)
Hope the new users will get benefited from it :)

Even I got to know many new info's :)
Thanks for that

Re steemed !

Hello @modernpastor,

I think post is more important, because it makes you known in the community which is important for your success here.

Commenting is good too though, i just did.😁😁

Thanks for your comment my friend ^^

I like commenting and posting both.

I condensed it down to BE YOURSELF. I reteemed this interesting insight that many will read and miss the point I think . This (dollar money)system forces EVERYTHING to become a transaction so thats how most think.

I am finding it incredibly hard to STOP the "forces" of greed pulling at me when I consider what each of my next actions will be here on steemit. The SAD part is I like to SAY I am no longer motivated by money because things turned out ok for me and I don't have a ton of cash but I have more than ENOUGH income and ALL the FREE time I want, so I am a HYPOCRITE, I truly get excited seeing the financial rewards and the upvotes and comments pile up.. So if I REALLY do not need money and act this way, I CANNOT IMAGINE people who are struggling financially not being influenced by $$$$$$$ in their actions.

I LOVE this PLACE. Twitter woke me up to CENSORSHIP and made it SUPERREAL when they shut up a PUNY little voice like me, but we are ALSO UP AGAINST OURSELVES and GREED.

I have already learned I do not want to promote a single piece of shiit (as in do it just because it looks to be a profitable decision) on this site (after doing that when I first got here), and your post has made me reconsider this greed that is pervasive in its influence on my actions. uggggggghhh I LOVE this place, I have been doing so much thinking. People need to be freed from their slavery and have some time and energy to contemplate things, thats one of the main reasons I woke up, I do not work. Sorry for the book,.

One more thought. I read the posts and yes it is a fact, monetary reward is a REAL draw and possibly the strongest reason I and most other people are here, I think freedom of speech comes second for most, for me I like to think I am here because twitter drove me away, but gab.ai exists and I could post there but I have no interest, I do not know if you cn follow my ramble here so easy but I see AI very very soon rendering ALL money more and more OBSOLETE, there are only so many jobs that can be lost and the system , whole house of "money" cards will fall just like the matrix movie. Self driving cars and trucks I think will be the catylyst but who knows new discoveries are happening at an EXPONENTIAL rate so the value of money in my mind will constntly be falling from here on out AND falling at a fast and faster rate as tech progresses. Good times, thanks for the trip.

Another great post i saw in Steemit to encourage minnow like me as well. Yeah, i've tried posting some articles based on my skills and experiences as commenting as well. It was tough actually by doing two things at the same time. Might have to practicing on by using markdown style as a tool from now on. Upvoted and resteemed hope your post can encourage more minnows. Thumbs up!

Thanks for the read man! Being new here no lie that actually was some great information for me! Keep up the good work man! Thanks again! #StayGreen #GattisStatus

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I must admit I too am new here and trying to get my head around what exactly i am supposed to be doing. BUt maybe, as you say, try things and see. Which is what i am trying to do.

Mostly, I want to attract people who like what i write as I do have a lot of words that i like to share EVERYWHERE :-) I am not always the best at commenting on other people's things but I get the feeling that it is necessary to do both or else, no one will even know you exist. Anyway, your post gave me food for thought. Thanks

I understand you sister.
Its the same by me. I am also more the writer than the commenter, but i learned that it is essential here :)

@modernpastor I joined seemit two days ago and was looking for some help on how to use this platform, your post is very helpful to me.

can anyone explain how can I increase my reputation ?

Hey my friend :)
Sorry for my late response.

Your reputation grows when higher ranked people upvote your posts and comments.
It's like a confirmation from other that you are bringing value into this community :)

You are really hitting the point here! It's more like networking, not just writing or commenting. (That's btw also the way I found you :D Due to a lot of different chat activities)
