Don't give up so quickly. The key to enjoying Steemit is to ignore the garbage and engage with a community. Use the search function or the list of tags to find topics that interest you, upvote the content you want to encourage, and comment so people see you're making your presence known. Steemit doesn't know what to show you as a new user since you don't have any 'preferences' yet, so you've got to work with it for a day or two, otherwise it just shows you the most recent stuff posted. :)
Once you find people who post things you like, Follow them so their posts show up in your feed. If they Resteem content, check out those authors and build your list of people so it customizes your feed and you see more of the stuff you like and less of the nonsense. :)
Make a post introducing yourself, who you are, and what you plan to talk about using the 'introduceyourself' tag so people looking for new folks to follow can get a sense of your style and what you like. If you want a template for how an introduction post might look, feel free to use mine for inspiration:

Posts here pay out 7 days after they're posted: 75% goes to the author, 25% is split among the people who curate, so even if you're not writing, you can grow your account by reading and upvoting on other people's stuff.
Don't give up. Dive in, explore, find people whose interests you share, and start having fun. Once you lose the whack-a-doos, Steemit becomes far more exciting, trust me. :)
Also, resist the urge to go Upvote crazy. You start with 100% power, and every vote you make drains a little of that strength. You regain 20% of your lost vote strength every 24-hour period, which means at most you should make 10 or 11 upvotes each day to maximize the impact of your votes and their return on curation. Once you get a high enough reputation and Steem Power (around 500 Steem Power, you can check what you currently have by checking your Wallet), you can change the % you give for your upvotes so you only spend partial power and can thus upvote more content without draining your own. :)
Thanks! Okay, maybe I'll give it a try later in the week or something.

Excellent! And don't feel like you have to post here all the time or anything. Most people I follow do 1-2 posts per day at the most, and some like @jeunebug go weeks or even a month between postings. I personally aim for once a day, though it's not always possible, so just do what works for you. :)
