Vote Throttling - The vote slider and its possible impact on Steemit adoption

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

Remember when Facebook rolled out reactions?

It was well received because it filled a void in the current implementation of the 'Like' button, but let's assume for a split second that the rollout went a bit differently. What if you reacted to a post on Facebook and saw this:

How do you think Facebook users would have reacted to the rollout with this tweak added?

Would it be...

Great! Now I can let the world know precisely how much I like, love, dislike, whatever a post.

Or perhaps...

What the hell is this?

I personally think it would be the latter because adding the slider complicates what otherwise is a very simple process. Facebook users don't want that level of detail with respect to how they react to a post.

But what about on Steemit?

The vote slider is a great feature that I think adds value to the platform for power users; however, at the same time it detracts from the experience for new users and users that are not familiar with the voting algorithm (who does fully?). Thus when voting the user is not really sure at what level to set their vote.

What is the current status of my voting power?

Should I conserve my vote?

Being forced to address questions like these every time a user votes adds just a tiny bit of mental stress to the act of voting. This is why I think for the average user it is not the best addon. The vote slider may reduce issues associated with bot voting and give those that know what they are doing the ability to fine tune their vote, but overall I think the average user is not too interested in these things.

They just want to read a post and cast a vote if they like it.

Therefore if one of the primary goals of Steemit is to obtain mass adoption, perhaps it may be a wise idea to reconsider the vote slider.

Just my 2 cents.

What do you all think?

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

Sometimes it is just better to not think about money, just vote with your heart, if you like what you read.

But my heart can't decide. Do I upvote your comment with 50% or 51%?

Edit: I went with 68% :)

I just ignore it and keep voting as I please.

That's fine, but if I understand correctly leaving your power at 100% means you only have 5 votes per day that impact payout. I could be wrong. I'm just not sure given the complexity of the system.

Yea that is wrong. If you vote 20 times a day and at 100% nothing changes from before.

Basically what happens now is that if you leave your vote at 100% one vote is like 5 votes before, but then because you vote 20 times each vote is worth less because your voting power decreases. That then amounts to the same thing as voting at 20% each time or what you used to do.

However if you vote only 5 times each of your vote is worth more than what it used to be when u voted only 5 times in the past.

Good strategy.

I think you wrote a good post and are asking the right question.

I think the problem you outline won't be as much of an issue as you think. We all will get used to it. It's just a bit new right now.

First off not every use gets this slider. You have to have a certain amount of SP to get that slider only. So new users won't see this and won't know that their targeted vote is 5. If they vote 20 times each vote is worth the same and all their voting power gets distributed evenly.

But power users like whales and dolphins have a better tool and way to vote more precisely. It's a great way of making it simple for beginners but giving the pros all the tools they need to be effective.

It is also very important that whales can vote more precisely given the financial impact their actions have and how important their ability to vote well has on how much value the platform provides.

I wrote about this in the article below:

I am in agreement with a lot of what you say - especially that it is a very valuable tool for those holding boat loads of steem power. Regardless of whether or not the feature is good/bad, it could use some TLC from a UX designer.

Yes, hahaha. It was not communicated in at he best way.

I do think we are still a young community and this thing is under development and in beta, so I think it's ok. I also think these features will be tweaked more.

Without a doubt they will over and over again. Thanks for your comments!

I'm still trying to figure out how to play this "game" properly. I have a hard time with the fact that often when I cast my vote it appears to do "nothing" for the creator of the content I took the time to read and happen to appreciate.
I think a sliding scale will add more confusion, annoyance and time to the process.

My point exactly. It is a bit off putting to those that don't understand the inner workings of the system.

Don't take this the wrong way, but because you don't have a lot of SP, your vote won't do much. It is mainly the people with a lot of Steem Power that will add a lot to the payout. For people like you and me, we should just vote on what we like. This helps the people with more voting power find good posts, because they (hopefully) notice that other people are liking it, so they check it out to see what it is about.

Thanks for your reply @timcliff. I'm not offended...I'm just dumb and learning Lmao
It's my own fault. I haven't taken the time to read all the fine print, so to speak, to try and understand how the platform works in its entirety. I think I am a typical newbie, and I appreciate your help.

Welcome :)

just add a smiley face to the slider. arund 1% is a neutral face and 100 is a big cheezy smile

Do you need to have a certain amount of steem power before you can use the slider? My profile doesn't have one yet.

Yes.
I think it is min. 1 Mvests aka about 311 Steem as of right now.

I have no answer for your question. Anyone else?

I don't always Steem
but when I do I Steem full-throttle

It's a step, but I think could use improvement. IN @blakemiles84's post today, I made the following comment.
"I like this. But I think I'd like to have the slider a one step process. I can slide it if I want, and then click it anythime on that article.
A floating upvote tool was recommended by someone. Was that you?
Seems like having the slider vertical on the side, along with the upvote button and amount like you proposed, floating so it's always in reach, would be a nice convenient improvement."

No that wasn't me, but I like it. I agree removing the two step voting process would be a big improvement.

It's a good idea... But it would need some tweaks.

I think one big problem may arise with the original design. And it is one that is plaguing sites like IMDB right now. People may vote based on what they think AND what it's current vote is at. Aka: I didn't like this post, I'd vote it a 4. However, it's voted a 9! I will vote one to drop it down closer to my vote. (The Logic is clear... And dumb) This problem leads to a ton of unnecessary 1s and 10s. (BTW, this post is a 7-8 for me, haha not 4!)

A solution for this is hiding the total from the voters, and only showing it to the author.

Another, less obvious and less important, problem may be the difference in thought; so what I think is a 6, you think is an 8. Although it's a problem, I doubt it would be a large one... Just good to enlighten the few that didn't already think of this one. (It's really small... Although it could be important, most likely it will not be.)

(Edit: Yes, I wrote this as if the slider didn't already exist... Haha, not yet for me at least. Hope my "improvements" help... Possibly.. Thanks)

That "how much do you love this post" was hilarious. I actually started laughing out loud at the restaurant I was at when I read it. Made my night and added a bit of humor to the whole voting debate 😀

Glad you found it funny @timcliff. I am not the best writer, so sometimes some subtle humor helps.
