VOTING AND COMMENTING ON STEEMIT: WHY IT IS ESSENTIAL TO PLATFORM GROWTH IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

in steemit •  7 years ago

CHAMATH PALIHAPITIYA, a former Facebook executive remarked in one of his interviews:
The short term dopamine driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works.”.source
An agenda driven platform that globally distributes any agenda as the truth in order to promote or diffuse into society any idea at a grand scale becomes a political tool for those that hold any power over it, may it be it the form of monetary value, social value or political value.
A selfie based, likes and thumbs up driven culture that fails to think for itself and buys into disseminated agendas, is at our doorsteps.

Corrective forces in times of social herding and thus social mindlessness don’t always save societies. In fact history is replete with falls of great civilizations more often than it gives any glimpses into societal sustenance and stability.
The lessons must be learned by any society wanting to pass it on to newer generations, in a state better than what existed for themselves.

STEEMIT is designed to be an incentive driven, blockchain based, public platform. The system is completely based on user generated content, commented and voted upon by its community, in a manner that is of permanent record and free of advertising and other monetary, agenda or political bias.
Those with heavy investments into the platform, have incentives to vote upon important, meaningful, positive, impactful, creative, helpful and accurate content. The community, as a whole, is kept as bias free as possible while accepting the strongest viewpoints in any direction.

The platform seeks to incentivize any contribution to the platform. Voting is limited to minimize abuse and thus promotes thoughtful voting and discourages fraudulent use. Voting is rewarded and with constraints in place, it removes mindless clicking and favors content creators that produce great content.

Commenting on posts is also rewarded as comments are voted upon as well. This incentivization goes a long way in building an interactive community. It is also seeks to bring out thought provoking discussions, which are some of the best I have ever seen on the internet. The wisdom of the system design lends itself to becoming the best discussion platform on the internet.

I would like the STEEMIT community to take these aspects of voting and commenting just as fundamental to the platform as great content creation is. A great comment leading to a great discussion and fostering new ideas infuses this community with a socially improved structure. If we as Steemians are going to succeed over other social media platforms then we must act responsibly with every vote and every comment.

It has taken me some time to recognize STEEMIT as a media with very important and long lasting impact on our society. As we grow this impact grows. If you are a Steemian, you are part of something very positive and very special. Your votes and your comments are part of the foundational structure. If this is your home, build it strong.

Not only those with "heavy investments", but those with a desire to have a community online without most of the hate, drama, and dribble of some of the other online communities. Extremely important post, people need to not be so concerned about commenting on a post. We need more comments.

Thanks brother, I have grown more fond of the platform. I think I posted one 2 liner on Facebook months ago.

I'll make it up one way or another my friend! Thanks man.

I am a rarity I guess, I did have a couple post to google blog thing about 6 years ago, but I don't think I have anything on facebook. I have an account my wife made me, but I don't think I ever did anything with it.

Comments on steemit seem to be more genuine from people. Like the person that left the comment and the vote actually took time to read what someone had written.
