Hey Steemit
I've noticed that there is an old comment of mine from 8 months ago that still gets upvotes from time to time.
It just recently got another upvote about 30 minutes before this post. Apparently I said something truly amazing back then. I was just explaining how re-steems work; it must be showing up high on Google search or something like that.
It's a shame I can't make any more money off these belated upvotes. One thing that would be cool is that if old posts could become eligible for future payouts. Of course, only new accounts could vote in it, previous votes would be locked in from previous payouts. Since only minnows are voting on it, I wouldn't get much, maybe a couple pennies at best, but better than nothing!
Maybe I should put an Ad there....
Edit: Ok I put an Ad there!
At least that comment is out there getting you more followers, who then assist you in future earnings. Adds in steemit posts... hmm.

Yea, that's a good point. At least it directs people to my blog, maybe that's good enough.

I think it brings up a really good point though..the nature of Steem in it's current form means you always have to focus on putting out new content! But there really is a HUGE place in the internet for rock solid content that never expires...for example, tutorials, recipes, how tos, diy stuff, advice...all kinds of things. If you spend a ton of time compiling something that is useful for years and years on end, it'd be cool for that to continue paying out.

Indeed this is true, but the difficulty is in the implementation of allowing for that to happen, while simultaneously preventing abuse.

It's a cool idea, but it has it's "issues". Whales would be able to power down, power up a new account, and then re-vote for the same content (over and over). Also, the rewards pool is fixed, so over time there would be less and less (as a percentage of the rewards pool) available for new content. That said though, having some form of long-term revenue model would have it's plus sides too. I think a lot more 'big time' content creators would see the value in moving here if there was more potential to earn.

I am still in love with the idea of having an author/creator landing page where we can have a bio, our stats and up to 10 of our favorite posts which we get to highlight. Those 10 posts should have the ability to continue earning. I don't think something like that would hurt the rewards pool at all. I'm also getting feedback on some of the tutorials I wrote like 9 months ago! A little residual income would be awesome.

Hi @merej99 - I haven't heard from you in a while. I've missed seeing your comments :) I totally agree on the bio/profile page part! I do think that there would be a way to balance out the rewards between short-term and long-term posts. The main hurdle is figuring out how to prevent abuse with power down + re-voting over and over. That, and it may make the blockchain memory requirements a lot higher. It would be nice to see some type of solution implemented for "long term content" at some point though.

Did you see how Golos forked in a system where users can pay to keep content active? I'm curious if this will be popular and possibly find it's way over to Steem.

The 4th bullet point in the article explains a bit, although it doesn't seem to have the exact fee set. Perhaps it's a parameter set by witnesses and adjustable over time?

Quick question..Is the rewards pool always fixed? IOW if a million new accounts come on next week, does the rewards pool still remain unchanged?

rewards pool doesn't not expand with more users necessarily but with a higher price. Presumably though, if Steemit exploded in popularity, the price would rise to match.

It changes based on the marketcap. If the price of STEEM goes up, then the rewards pool is bigger. If the price of STEEM goes down, then the rewards pool shrinks. It technically has nothing to do with the number of users, although one would hope that a large increase in the number of users would likely translate into an increase in the price of STEEM :)

Very good. I thought that was basically how it worked, but when I read in your comment "Also, the rewards pool is fixed..." I started to think I must have been mistaken. Thanks for clearing it up for me :) I appreciate it.

It'd be bad with the current system, yeah. But I believe we need some kind of advancement that allows long-term revenue. Most posts on any site are most popular when they are new, but still the ability to continuously earn money on the content you create forever is very attractive.

Oh man.
I wrote @dantheman back on this issue on a post he made months ago. Edit, here is the post and it was in Jan.
I wrote a novel out and explained why I feel this content should not be locked down with an expiry date and compared it to a book deal or movies, that all get royalties with no expiry date.
I liked my comment, so much I actually turned it into a full blog post that was posted on my page maybe 2 mths ago? It was a beaut.
A beaut that will not get me paid because it is locked down with a publishing expiry date as the author while the content remains on Steemit and the company can say look at all this great content we have here!
Oh man. LOL.....

It would be great if old posts and comments could still pay us something, but I can appreciate it makes the reward computations impractical. Even 7 days seems short, but there had to be some sort of compromise

I am new to this and this is how I found out that you don't get income on a post after the initial 7 days. Bummer... But still, thanks @neoxian, @timcliff , @barrydutton & rest for your insights. I'm sure there are reasons behind this mechanism like the issue with potential abusers and others, but it would be nice if there was some kind of option allowing for a limited amount of passive income like that suggested by @merej99 for what @timcliff called "long term content". I guess we get to see new posts more frequently because of this mechanism. Correct me if I am wrong...

I don't understand why they make it like this, so after 7 days your post is shown but you don,t earn anithing. It is not fair and i see many amazing posts here and people see the posts in every day because they have good info and someoane vote and somane not just because they now the vote value is nothing. I think now it is a bit hard to change this but i see a thing that can be done. They can make the old posts earn money forever but just a percentage lets say 10% or 5% and 5@ to be used for something, maybe advertising or i don't know so in this way everybody wins. I am not expert in this but i think it is a good ideea.

hmm, this has me slightly upset tbh. Lots of good content is gonna go undervalued/ unrewarded , could there be another way to prevent whales self-voting with alternate accounts?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Well, after thinking for a minute I fully understand the reason for such a system, there really is no way to stop one from creating new accounts and powering them up , you'd have to monitor "suspicious" transactions and track voting activity and IPs of the suspected sock puppet accounts, too much work (and arguably low priority) for a platform this small and new.
But maybe after it explodes in popularity.
