I think you are confussing hydropinics with genetically modified strains, i dont know about weed, but hydro is a perfect method to provide a boost of nutrients to the plants so they produce better and that applies to all plants.
Also it is an utter complication and mostly justified in areas where the climate wont allow or space is a issue.
You can do the test, use the best organic soil in the universe and try groing the same seeds one in that soil one in a perfect hidro setup....
I did that with chery tomattoes 2 years ago to see... same plant (I cloned two plantlets from a plant i had)
The hydro one gave me tommaotes the size of a golf ball, sweeter and tastier, the soil one gave me normal tiny cherry tomatoes... Also the hidro was like a forest and the soil one was the usual spinly ugly plant you need to cage.
You are probably correct, I can't tell you for sure, tbh.
Maybe all hydro strains are modified (in the UK, where illegal)
I haven't grown it anywhere else.
