Steemit, is it worth participating or just a waste of time?

So is it all a waste of time or will it prove to be one of the greatest ideas of our time?
I first came across Steemit, through my brother, 8 months ago, and the thought of making money for what I was already doing on social website such as Facebook seemed like an excellent idea, so I was very egar to get involved. It was a struggle for me to first think about what I was going to bring to this new community, so I just decided to be myself and post about the random things that I do in my daily life as I've always been very outgoing and spontaneous.

Of course I felt the pressure to try to provide a post that was popular as this could earn me some money, as that is my goal just like you. My first post was called "Washing up - how to do it properly" which is my expert guide on how to maximise your washing up capabilities.

The post made me $17.07 and I was quite pleased, I can recall rubbing my hands together saying "Yeah I'll have some of this" and I was thinking that it wouldn't be long until I made some real money. I then followed up with my second post:
"Laundry - how to put the laundry away properly" for which I was amazed when I recieved 60 upvotes but only $0.20 cents.

What is going on? I said to myself, this can't be right, OK lets go again. My next 6 posts received less than $1.00 combined and was a serious dent to my pride more than anything else.

Is Steemit worth it?
I then started to question this whole Steemit idea and the idea you can make money.
I was putting the work in but I was getting no reward, no recognition and no attention. At least when I was on Facebook my ego would be boosted from likes on my posts the attention I received. I'm a success on Facebook I thought, and even though I'm not making any money from it at least I had my pride in tact. So i decided to leave Steemit alone and go back to what I was use to.

The return to Steem...
A couple of months go by and I start hearing more and more about Steemit and other crypto currencies. I start to dig a little deeper into the world of crypto and realised I massively underestimated crypto currencies, especially Steem as Steemit was the ideal place for me, as I have so much that I can bring to this community.

Then realised I need to take Steemit more seriously and apply myself to the platform and create my own space where my followers and potential new ones, trust and enjoy reading or watching my posts. This was never a "Get rich quick" place where you can just anything and earn money from it, you have to build and build and build.

Now that I'm back, I'm truly loving being part of the community as I'm taking more time out to not just post, but to read and engage with others on the platform. This is what Steemit is for me now my only regret is that I didn't take the time to understand what Steemit was in the first place and as a result missing out on 7 months.

Not anymore more as I'm here to stay :)

If you leave for a long time, do you have to do something special to come back again?
Also, does your reputation go down?
Thanks.

I didn't have to do anything speacial to return, just log back in. I think reputation will stay the same as there haven't been any posts to make it go up or down.

Thank you very much for answering, appreciate it.

Welcome back @notdavemate, don't you leave us no more!

I am a newbie here. Reading your content enlighten the doubt I have. It helps me not to expect too much on Steemit without understanding first how it really works.

I'm also a newbie, trying to figure this thing out. Very glad to have come across your post. Thank you!
