Minnow Votes Project - some thoughts

in steemit •  7 years ago

Happy Sunday Fellow Steemians,

I wanted to share some information about a project @markrmorrisjr is heading-up. It's called the Minnow Votes Project, and its ultimate goal is to increase minnow visibility and put the power of the vote back into the hands of the people and not the vote bots.

When I first read about this, I was immediately interested. In the few weeks I've been on Steemit, I've seen some really awesome content and I've seen some really not awesome content sitting at the top of the trending feed.

I very quickly learned that the trending feed is the last place I want to look for new and interesting Steemians. In fact, I was pretty bummed about the content I saw on the trending page. I questioned whether or not Steemit is the right place for me, because as I saw it then, if the content on the trending feed is what is popular on Steemit, then I have no reason to stay. Not only am I uninterested in most of the content, but I also don't want to write anything like most of what I see on the trending page. Thankfully, I stuck it out and started browsing under tags to find content I like.

I don't really think that's what the trending page should be though. The trending page shouldn't be the place that current users actively dissuade new users from browsing (I've seen this in posts). Ideally, it should boast the best and brightest content on Steemit at a given time. That's where the Minnow Votes Project enters. It's a simple act of bringing people together to create community and make Steemit better in the process.

If this is something you might be interested in, I highly suggest you check out @markrmorrisjr's initial thoughts here and latest updates on the project here. He does a much better job of explaining the aims and scope of this project than I can do.

This project may not be for you and that's okay, but if it is for you, we're glad to have you join.

Happy Steeming!

I agree in that the trending topics are so not interesting. Some of them may as well be the daily farm and ranch news report. I cant believe how some of the same people post complete junk like screenshots of thier supposed crypto coin forcasts every single day. I am beginning to see their game and I cant imagine that lasting forever. Steemit is still new and there are people who have figured out how to game the system. If I spend too much time on the trending page I can get really cynical.
My hope is that talented people like you will eventually rise to the top and some of those junk posts will loose their advantage. I have to believe that the good guys will win if they can last long enough. My concern is that someone else will find a way to better steemit with a new platform and coin and all of the good guys will jump ship. In the end I always go back to my reasons for being here. I needed more motivation with my daily disciple of writing and I wanted to write about a more variety of topics. With that I will leave you and say thank you for your contribution to this brave new world of steemit.

Since I've only recently come to Steemit, I hope that a new platform doesn't come along any time soon. I want to grow my blog organically, and for a while, I believed that very few users on Steemit wanted the same thing. Seeing things like the Minnow Votes Project and other posts about the desired demise of the vote bots gives me hope that others also want to grow their blog organically. I think It can be done, but we'll definitely have to stick with it. Like you say, it's still a great place to write and fine-tune those writing skills. The longer I'm here, the more I like it.
