Conversation Starters

My Mom Couldn't Cook!

I will be posting one conversation starter a day for the next 50 days. Come and talk with me and my friends. Practice your English if you are struggling and we will help you improve through example and kindness. My Daughter bought this activity game for her children and I thought this would be fun to play with on Steemit.

First Opener

My Grandma taught me how to garden and preserve all kinds of food. My Grandpa and Uncles hunted the Pacific Northwest forest for deer and elk and fished the Pacific Ocean for salmon, crabs, and flounder. My favorite foods were her walnuts and hazelnuts she picked and dried. She could cook and can anything, but I will always remember her basement full of canned Bing cherries and dried nuts.

I would stay with Grandma Dorthy, my Mother's-Mother and crack dried walnuts and eat her canned cherries from her trees she had growing in her backyard.

My Grandpa and Grandma lived in North Portland, Oregon and had a huge two story "salmon pink" house. Yeah the house was an ugly color but it was well cared for. Everything was neat, clean and the grass was always cut perfectly.

Keeping the lawn trimmed was Grandpa's job, he ran a car body shop with my two Uncles and Grandma sewed clothing for people she had known for ever. Grandma made enough money sewing clothes to buy a house and flip it. With that money she bought another house and did the same thing until the day she passed. Grandpa died first in his 80s over 20 years ago. Grandma lived until she was in her early 90s and passed eight years ago. Between the two they lived a happy comfortable life. They weren't rich but they were secure and happy working for themselves.

@ghiyats, give me the name so I can look them up...

I am learning so much and having a blast..thank you <3

Makanan Indonesia kan? I saw food like this when I lived in Indonesia.

My grandmother was always the cook within the household! She made so many traditional Mediterranean meals, and my mom tried to learn but never could!

@snrm, ohhhh mediterranean food, some of my favorite, share one dish with me so I can look it up! I cook often for my daughter to give her a break and I love to cook for my grandchildren.

That's great stuff you decided @reddust. I'm always enjoying with steemit family. Waiting to your new conversation starter. Nice cooking experience sharing. Best of luck.

What's your Favorite food made by your Mom or Grandma @dragonking?

Milk toffee :D

Your Grandma or mother made milk toffee, I am not very good at making candy so I respect anyone that can!

because the woman is a housewife.

Yes

Wah lezat bangget! Did you add a lot of cabe?

@reddust, some of my favorite food from Indonesia is Indomie. I am glad that there is an Asian market in our city. My children love it when we treat them with Indomie.

My Mom wasn't much of a cook when I was young but improved over time. She eventually made the best turkey dinners with stuffing to die for.

Stuffed turkey always brings back memories of the holidays...I couldn't cook either when I first started feeding my family but I remembered my Grandma's example, if she could do it so could I...

wow even you also donate your steem doller to the poor people.nice thats great.i saw your image.thank you very much for donating to the poor people.

@blueorgy79, I grew up in a Christian culture even though I am Buddhist. Both traditions teach that real wealth comes from giving. I have reached my goal with my blog and account so now I practice giving. I am still learning how to be generous...

What is your favorite food your Mom or Grandma made?

My favorite food is Date cake made by mom.
Very best task you organized for improve English to steemians.
Keep going...Steemit will help you.

Thank you @madushanka, I love anything made with dates <3

Sound being awesome.

From your story you really learnt a lot from your grandparents.... I only saw my mother's father and my father's mom, I couldn't learn from the because I didn't understand my tribal dialect they spoke. They both can't speak English.

@tobex, are they still alive? My husband's mother can't speak English, she is from the Netherlands and I can't speak Dutch so he translates.

My mom's dad died 6 years ago, but my dad's mother is still alive, though she is now very old and falls ill often.

great, I'm interested in practice, and if it's family

Yes your are part of our Steemit family @elfrances185. What is your favorite food by your Mom or Grandma?

shellfish

We ate shellfish as well, but not one of my favorites....We would go to the Oregon coast and dig them out of our beaches...We had some really big ones that looked like cow tongue....they were so ugly but tasted amazing breaded and fried. I can't remember the shell fish name .... :-(

even so it's fine, tasted this delight

the food I like best is timphan.
it is typical food of aceh people

Yummy 2.jpeg

You are making me feel so hungry and I am going to try and make some...OMG this looks so yummy

Thank goodness you are happy.... I am so grumpy right now because I am so hungry...hahaha

hhhhh.
are you happy with me ... ??

of course, humor is hard to see on the net sometimes....we are doing what women have done since the begging of time! Sharing our food and family stories and teasing each other <3

hahhha ...
what is your real name @reddust

I am going to be a sad party pooper.

I have never had a meal made by any of my grandparents.
And my mother, sad to say now, didn't really know how to cook.
She thought Allspice meant just adding more of all the spices.

I learned how to cook mac-n-cheese, hamburger helper and betty crocker cakes from her. (and then, I do not remember her cooking, it was always one of us kids)

Since then, I have found an Italian, and I have learned more about spices and cooking then my mother probably every knew.

My favorite food is banana chocolate chip muffins. ( I made a post with its recipe a while ago)

That's okay, my mom wasn't the best at cooking or being a Mom, but hey you and I survived.... <3. I started out with boxed food as well but found out it was cheaper to cook from scratch ;-)

Wow...Good staring job @reddust. My favorite food is fruit salad my mother made. Thanks to my mom.
Waiting to see join more steemit family members with you.

@kingsberry what kind of salad? I can't wait to see who will play with us!

Banana, Pineapple, mango mixed salad.

Oh, my mouth just started watering, I would love some fruit salad <3

sure...It's glad to hear @reddust.

I would have enjoyed knowing your grandparents. My grandma made a lot of great dishes. I remember her graham cracker crust custard pie and her hot oatmeal with raisins for two starters. Mom was not much of cook. Grandma outperformed her. LOL I used to bake with Grandma as a child. She would let me make imprints of my hand for hand cookies. Thanks for a good article. @reddust.

@enjoywithtroy, I had the same experiences as you, my Mom wasn't interested in cooking. Oh I remember the custard pies with graham cracker crust, I don't eat much sweets anymore but I remember the days <3

Do you know his food?
couscous-marocain-poulet-ultra-simple-L-aLTWLf.jpeg

Called Couscous my mom makes it every Friday its a tradionnal in morocco, its so delicious .

@askmee, I've made Couscous before and the topping looks amazing. I've heard Morocco's traditional foods are absolutely amazing! Now I want to get a cookbook and cook something different.

I suggest to watch videos of this man , he traveled to different country only only for tasting delicious food , he talks arabic

sorry I just replied to it I just woke up

Hello @reddust

What a modest grandma and grandpa you had, and I knew you must have loved them to the core going by your tone in narrating your experience with them.

Unfortunately, I have no favorite food from my 'grandies' as they were all dead before I was born.

Sadly,
@eurogee

Oh that is sad but you can smile from our stories and I will give you a hug <3

Sure. I just smiled ✌️

Hi @reddust.
I envy you. My grandparents on my mother's side were already sleeping in a deep rest when I was born. On the other hand, my dad's parents didn't show their care and love to us, their grandchildren, to the point that my mother decided to send us to her native province where I met my genuine grandma (sister of my mother's mother).
I used to went to her house and ate all kinds of traditional food she cooked and prepared for me. Sometimes, we took a bath together, laughed heartily, and sang songs in the wind.
I miss her and it is sad to realize that I can't go back and enjoy the moments we had .

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

@xhunxhiss, I have been grandmother and mother to several young children and adults who didn't have anyone to care for them.

You are blessed to have lovely memories to cherish and you made me smile sharing the memories taking baths together, singing to the wind. I feel a big kindness welling up in my heart from your story.

:) happy life!

Your family...

What's your favorite food made by your Mom or Grandma @papma?

fried banana with cheese

I've never eaten fried bananas with cheese. I will have to try it, must be plantain kinda banana. Not the sweet yellow bananas we Americans are used too.Plantain.jpeg

we use banana abee its name if in aceh

serveimage-1.jpeg

I will look it up! I found tiny little bananas.

IMG_20180221_185720.jpg

This is really interesting, the favorite food make by my mother is usually, fried rice with salad. I love it so much especially when mayonnaise is added.

Oh I love fried rice but I gain weight easily so I can only eat it occasionally. I love salads with lots of tomatoes and cucumbers....

Favorite food is hard to pick but I’ll have to go with tuna Alfredo.

That is a specialty my mom came up with when she was creating in the kitchen. Her homemade Alfredo sauce was always a hit and one day we decided to add tuna and our tastebuds said thank you.

Favorite food from grandma has to be her strawberry pies. There is nothing like fresh picked strawberries from the garden in a homemade pie.

Oh your family knew how to cook! I can't imagine Alfredo sauce with tuna, I am going to have to try it. We grew a lot of strawberries in Oregon, that's how I earned my school clothes money picking strawberries. All these lovely memories are making me smile, thank you for sharing @lydon.sipe

Yes they did! My mother earned the nickname ‘spice queen.’

Thank you for the conversation starter my wonderful friend! :)

You are welcome @lydon.sipe (hugs)

Great idea
my mother coke something we called it Bastila in Morocco very delicious food the best for me you will like too.
btw i already post my first painting 😍

##Upvote/Resteem###

What was your favorite food made by your Mom or Grandma @steem2000?

Well my favorite food of all time in any category (sweet and savory)
Is Sour&Sweet chicken.
The last time i ate this dish was 3 months ago
It was really delicious, i love chinese food
I made the dish myself it took two tries to make the sauce,
but i managed to do it
And after that i felt great
Because i love cooking the backstory and modification of a certain dish/ingredient

It's time for me to go to bed!

Thank you or sharing some of your memories and I will be back tomorrow to share some more!

@reddust,
Wow this is great! You went to back, to your childhood! I think I do have such a great stories in that time too! One day I will reveal on STEEMIT! Great writing my dear friend!

Cheers~

It's awesome childhood story I enjoyed your post thank you dear@reddust

every thing is favorite what is made by my mom.

Oh lucky you @mafi001, but if you want to play, you must pick one food or dish!

Family time the best time :D yay

This sounds like a suburban family. Your grandma died at a good age because she was so conscious of what she ate and made most things herself. interesting family you have. I love women who have gardens

wow thats really an interesting post!

this will be really interesting thing to do on steemit :)

Interesting conversation starter. My favorite meal was Grandmother’s pot roast and mashed potatos, with a bowl of fresh peas from the garden. It was a family affair every Sunday. I guess it was kind of a traditional english meal. They lived in Pennsylvania on a small farm, but worked in town until they retired to the farm. There is a lot to say if you think about it. 🐓

The time with the family is the best. Blessings dear @reddust

@reddust, I love seeing so many Indonesians interact with your post. I am going to share some of my favorite Indonesian food. I hope that is ok.

  • deng-dang balado
  • rendang
  • sate madura
  • martabak manis

Oh how I miss all of these wonderful foods!
