You can purchase STEEM with BTC on a few exchanges like Poloniex and Bittrex. Unfortunately, when I checked today, withdraws and deposits for STEEM on Poloniex is disabled due to the hard fork that just occurred.

You might want to wait a bit before purchasing any as it's in a bit of a funk right now.

    Hi! Brilliant news to hear! both you and @raange suggested poloniex, so I shall try that one. Do you know if there are huge transaction fees? I am also wanting to get in to Dogecoin, heard that will pop!!! thanks again!

      have a look at civic, currently still in ICO (inital coin offering) stage but buying at $0.10 and i have an article on it on my blog.
