10 Tips for new Steemit users I wish I knew when I started
I've been very lucky to be part of the awesomeness I call the Steemit Community for the last weeks. I thought it would be nice to share a few tips for those who just joined this amazing community. If any veterans have any additional tips, comment and share your tip as well!
I'll admit that when I joined Steemit I was actually only reading and was only about to read the amazing content there is out there. But when reading, I actually wanted to dive in and share and write posts myself! I'm very happy I started doing that because I made lots of new contacts through them!
I hope these tips will get you started and gives you insight on how to do it!
1. First and foremost, get an understanding on how Steemit works.
This is what is important. You don't have to do it but it's quite handy to know how it actually works. The easiest way to do that is to read the Steemit White Paper. It took me three reads to get a good understanding of how it works and get the knowledge of it (and still not an expert of it) but it felt that I really needed it to be better at this!
Furthermore you can ask the community! Every veteran knows how it works and you can engage with the community and ask questions because everyone is happy to help you out! You can also browse the 'Steem-help' tag that has several posts on tips and tricks!
2. Introduce yourself using the #Introduceyourself tag.
I forgot to do it at first. Huge mistake! This is your first impression, and first impressions matter! Take your time to stand out of the crowd and sell yourself. This is a great way to get attention and get followers that will read your content.
When choosing the tags for your introduction post, include the 'Introduceyourself' tag and you're good to go!
Keep it short and to the point. Make it around 3 paragraphs so that people can read a short but good intro about you!
3. Proofread, proofread and again proofread!
Don't bring sloppy posts to Steemit. Your English should be on point and bring your A game. Your content should be taken seriously. You don't have to be a writer to be good, just have some knowledge about grammer and if you're not sure, ask a friend to give it a quick read!
4. Engage in the Steemit Chat
The Steemit chat is A-MA-ZING! It's my favorite part of the community. You can chat with other Steemians and can start building relationships with them! Just engage the users and talk to them. The best way to start is in the 'General' channel. The purpose of this chat is to have conversations with other Steemians and share knowledge and interests. In other channels you can post your blogs but it's more interesting to take some time and go into discussions. In the longrun those discussions will help you with quality followers ;)
5. Experiment
What do you like? What do your followers like? Experiment with various blog posts and try out new things! This is the moment to try new stuff out! Perhaps you want to go in depth on a subject or just give a quick update. Everything is possible!
Don't be afraid to make mistakes, it's human! Just let your good intentions come forward ;).
6. Don't overwrite
When I first started writing instead of reading, I wanted to post, post and post some more!! I was overly excited. My tip.. Don't! Don't post more than 4 blogposts per 24 hours. You can be penalized for posting frequently. The steemit community stays and if you're intending to stay longterm, you have all the time to post what's on your mind! A good amount of posts are 1-2 per day.
7. Will you be with me?
No, not that kind, haha! Start building relationships early on! Steemit is a relation driven platform, it is lonely at the bottom if you just post and leave again. Talk talk talk and engage. Promote your content and share other valuable content of others. Read other blog posts and comment on them :D. Leave a comment and share that vote, even if it's just $0,01 cent! It's the gesture that counts. Everyone had to start somewhere.
My focus is to leave 5-10 meaningful comments each day. Since I've started doing that I have made a lot of new friends here and see my engagement of my posts tripple! Just drop a comment and say! Hi there!
8. Experiment with tags
You're probably not an Online Marketeer and not much experience with SEO (Search Engine Optimalisation). Not to worry! Just experiment with tags. Just have 2-3 tags right ;) There is plenty of content and just check out others on what they use and do some research!
Reading the tags of others will make you more knowledgeable, but it can also give you a lot of ideas for the future!
9. It's not all about the money, money, money
Don't be disappointed if your first posts don't do much and don't make that much money. In fact, my posts only made $0,04 when I started! It feels crap and a bit discouraged. But not to fear. When you engage with the community it will all go right and will go up to $0,50 and higher! It takes time. It won't just come overnight! You have to be active and social and then you will see results!
10. Don't upvote every post!
Your upvotes matter, even if they are not worth much (yet). Make sure your upvote content that is relevant and valueable. That's how you make friends as well ;). Also the more you vote, the less your votes being worth. You can check the worth of your vote here: https://steemnow.com/
The thumb rule is to vote 10 times a day ;).
Alright! That's it! That's a wrap! I hope you found these tips useful. Let me know if you liked it and perhaps some of your own!
I also made a post about getting more followers that might interest you. You can check it here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@rkrijgsman/how-to-get-more-followers
Very nice post. One tip I would add is, buy as much Steem as you can (but no more then you can afford to loss). Steem may never be this low again. I wish I would of brought a lot more when it was 7 cents.

Also a great tip! Just curious, what's your take on Steem and why to buy it. I'm writing a post on why minnows aren't buying Steem. What's your top reason why they should buy it? :D

It's a good way to give your SP a bust. There is nothing better then voting on something and have the price go up. And now is the best time. Say that Steem is at a $1.75 and you spend $200. You will have added 114.286 steem to your account. Now lets say in a year from now Steemit is popular so everyone want in, and steem is at $17.50. Now these new people spending $200 on steem will get 11.429 steem. And as a bonus your $200 investment went up 10x. No guarantee this will happen though.

"Hi there"!
gosh darn, just can't do it.. have to add more...! lol
nice little summaries you've put together. I've been telling people similar things for months. Best way to gain traction is to interact meaningfully with the community, and definitely with those who take the time to thoughtfully comment on your posts as well!

I really appreciate how you have laid this out and I will follow your ideas and your profile. Steemit is so far very overwhelming to me and I think this focus will help me get started. A lot of the other posts I have read for help go WAY over my head, and I can understand you very well.

First three months ALL my 200 odd posts earned less than $2 COMBINED!! .... the trick is to try and get dolphins or higher to vote for you and then RETAIN their vote. If you check through my past three weeks posts ... you will see I somehow lost my whale votes after the hard fork..earnings dropped like a stone ..25% of what they were. {sigh} ... We soldier on!! I shall follow and support you and we see how it goes.

Damn that's hard! Shows some real character that you kept going despite your low earnings at the time! Respect for you! :) You weren't in it for the money and that's really nice. Moneys comes anyway ;)
Such a shame that you lost 25% of your earnings after the hard fork. Hopefully they will get back on track in a few days. You are still doing great though! Keep on blogging mate ;)

Hah, I only GET 33%, lost 67% but is a temporary setback. I continued because I was learning new skills, and I had committed to a 'two year' plan. Also it forced me to learn to use my camera properly, next I need to learn to use an editor as it appears that the community only appreciates 'photoshopped' pics.... anyway...this is a good spot to play, beats other social media hands down.

It's always nice to learn new skills :). Photoshop is pretty decent (& quick) to learn as a new skill, but it's just a shame that the community only likes photoshopped pics. The real ones are actually capturing the beauty of the image way better and tells a better story.

One question : why the money I get on my post sometimes goes down ?
What could be the reasons ?

Good question! That happens to everyone and it has several factors. First and foremost it's about the upvoter and how many other votes he casts. Also about the value of the SBD (check at coinmarketcap). So what you have to do to keep it up is network with people, let them upvote your posts and resteem it to keep it relevant and then you keep your payout on a steady level ;). It is hard work but pretty rewarding in the end!
