Bagan is an ancient old city that was the capital of the first Burmese empire but it does offer something fresh to its visitors. It is located in central dry zone of the country, on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River. It was founded by King Anawrahta who converted to Theravada Buddhism in 1044 and he started building some of the grandest temples of Bagan, like the Shwezigon Pagoda as an act of making merit.
