The body of a small Gangetic dolphin has been recovered from the Karnafuli river in Hamidchar area of Chandgaon police station in Chittagong. The baby is about one year old, 3 feet 5 inches in length. Ranger Md. Ismail Hossain and Forest Department worker Ajay Dev were present.
Manjurul Kibria, a professor in the zoology department at Chittagong University and a co-founder of the Halda Research Center, said there were no signs of injuries on the dolphin's body. The dolphin is thought to have died after being caught in a fisherman's net.
The dolphin has been taken to the Halda River Research Laboratory of Chittagong University for conservation.
Earlier on July 15, the body of another adult dolphin was found in the East Gomdandi area of Boalkhali.
Since 2016, 29 dead dolphins have been found in different parts of the Halda River. Of the 29 dead dolphins found in Halda since 2016, seven have found no signs of injury, according to the Halda Research Laboratory. They have assumed that they have 'normal death'.
One of the rest was killed for stealing fat. Researchers believe that three of them were trapped in rivers and others died when they were hit by a boat.
It is known that oil is produced from the skin of dolphins. When the dolphin is caught, the fishermen cut the skin of the dolphin and put it in different containers. After a few days, the skin is decomposed into oil. Later, the fishermen mixed the fuel with charcoal and sprinkled it in the river. This caught a lot of fish in the fishermen's nets.
Besides, many rural Kabirajs also buy these dolphins at high prices. Later they make oil and sell it in the market, which is sold at Rs 400-600 per kg.
It is to be noted that the Fisheries Protection and Conservation Act, 1950 does not mention any guidelines for the conservation of dolphins or dolphins in all the fishery resources that have been mentioned.
