Afghanistan is in the process of withdrawing foreign troops, including the United States, and the Taliban are fighting for control of the country's provincial cities. Lashkar Gah could fall to the Taliban at any time.

The BBC reports that US and Afghan forces have stepped up their attacks. Meanwhile, locals told the BBC that Taliban fighters had taken over a television station in the city.

Maj. Gen. Sami Sadat, commander of the Afghan army from Lashkar Gah, told the BBC that the Taliban's takeover of the province would pose a serious threat to world security. He added that what is happening in Afghanistan is not a war. It is a war between freedom and totalitarianism.
The southern Helmand province of Afghanistan is one of the centers of US and British military operations in Afghanistan. The BBC reports that the capture of Helmand by the Taliban will be a major setback for the current government of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, if Lashkar Gah falls, it will be the first time the Taliban have seized a provincial capital since 2016. The BBC reports that the Taliban are fighting for control of not only Lashkar Gah but also three other provincial capitals.

According to the BBC, the Taliban are trying to take control of Kandahar, Afghanistan's second largest city. If Lashkar Gah and Kandahar fall into the hands of the Taliban, it will be a great victory for them. The Taliban have been fighting for control of the western city of Herat for the past few days. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has blamed the withdrawal of US troops for the Taliban's offensive, saying "this is a sudden decision because of our current situation."

The United States has said it is withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, but has said it will support airstrikes by government forces.
