TOOT - Is Flagging Posts That Are Offensive To Me Censorship?

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

So tonight I had the pleasure of being called Out As A Flaggot by @skeptic Mass Flaggot Post along with a few other Steemians. Inc @stellabelle , @neil-rothbard , @sigmajin , @sokoloffa , @artem-sokoloff , @justiceforall , @cathynsons , @lawofattraction , @geny , @cameron-here , @steemingnate and @hajevoy60

This is my reply on that post.

Thanks for the mention @skeptic , to be fair I have flagged very few posts in my 5 months on Steemit. A couple by accident because of the page layout on my phone and I believe I rectified all those I became aware of , others that are blatant attacks on others and some blatant plagiarism or extream xxx pornography which I doubt is their own work and not attributed. I would like to know any user that has left Steemit because of my actions as I have done my best to encourage many people to join and look forward to them sharing their knowledge and stories. I see you have an issue of seeing flagging a post as censorship., maybe it is but Steemit is a community that uses upvoted to support content it sees as valuable and flags to push down on content which the reader find unacceptable, both of which are personal choice and your calling me out is as much censorship is as me flagging something I find disagreeable.
As for my luck, I assure you that is what it is. I try to enter as many times as possible and it is a 50/50 chance in most cases.
Thank you for making Steemit a more diverse place.

Do you think @skeptic is right?

I joined Steemit in June but didn't nothing until early August. Since then, I have been an acitive member of Steemit , I think I've been a good steemian , I read and upvoted lots of posts, followed over 1000 accounts , made over 1300 comments , resteemed many posts , invited many people to the ecosystem And yes I have Flagged a few posts too.

The one that seems to upset @skeptic is a post by an obviously related account that had the goal of posting xxx porn and aggressively pushing a porn agenda (under the guise of free speech)in the Steemit timeline with no nsfw warning or care for the community. This is a diverse community with all manner of views , values and ages and we do have a growing number of young people on here.

Am I really a flaggot ? Or do I have a vote in not just what I support here but what I personally find unacceptable?

If it was a question of taking simple offense to something then I would say yes, flagging is a form of censorship. However, no one who does not want to see a very ugly vag and giant diseased c**k, at any time, especially now while consuming porridge, should not have to see even a thumbnail of that. There should be some option to have this stuff shunted well.

In the case you mention, the poster was deceitful, in that the pornographic aspects of the post were meant shock and surprise ... as @hilarski mentioned, if proper flagging and title warning was used, one could simply avoid .. even MUTE the poster so they can be bypassed in the future. If deceit is used to draw people into a post with no such warnings, then they should be flagged into oblivion imho.

Thanks for your input. The poster has reposted the content with a less confrontational image first and I have no issue with it. The problem with saying just mute it is you don't know what to mute until you see it.

that's true .. I never use mute, it is pretty much useless - would be much better to have a method to avoid / bypass entirely

I don't think flagging should be free of consequences. At the very least I'd like to see the amount of flags generated from an account right on their blog, to be able to avoid snowflakes. Ideally a flag would cost SP or STEEM to discourage its usage and instead foster conversation.

Agreed I'd be quite happy to pay for a flag but there could be unintended consequences from that as well.

As long as the category is clearly defined I have no problem with any type of content. When they don't warn the community then by all means a flag is warranted. I don't flag anything but that is my personal choice. I would not get bent out of shape over it. There is porn on every social network.

The post in question was led by a very close up pic of the business ends of a couple that was a bit of a shock while eating my breakfast. Simpily putting an advisory image in first on the post , the xxx pic wouldn't show in the new feed, those who are interested can click to enter, so to speak.
