Steem was built to be transparent. You can see everything on Steem. This removes the barrier for non-technical people getting into blockchain.

Interesting. I'm all for transparency, just don't see any particular purpose for making the balances public. Seems like it's a great way for hackers to target higher balance holders. No?

Well, with most blockchain wallets, you can see what everyone's balance is anyway. Even if it wasn't so easily accessible on Steemit, you would probably be able to find them anyway with enough technical know-how. I think the idea was to put everything out there so everyone could see it.
