Are Steemit Friends real Friends?

in steemit •  8 years ago

It's something I've been wondering. And, honestly, I'm not sure yet.

Some of you, I think, would get along great with me in real life.

There are a lot of Pokemon Go enthusiasts here.

And I think they'd be fun to hang out with.

There are people sharing recipes and pictures of food.

And sharing recipes, too. You know I'd love to hang out with these guys.

Most importantly, there are tons of people on this site who are passionate about writing.

And these people make me feel like I'm not alone.

But are they real friends?

I want to believe it, but I worry about how competitive Steemit can be, as a platform. I get so much more comments and dialogs going here than I do on my regular blog. Maybe this is the better platform.

But then I worry about the money aspect.

With everyone working so hard to become a "Steemit success story" (and I do not exempt myself from that category), does anyone have any time to just be friends? I worry about that.

It might be easier to overcome that issue if we had a way to keep track of the people we follow. But would that even be enough?

I'd like to know everybody's thoughts. Please comment. Please?

Thanks for reading.

Like in real life, you will meet at lot of people here. And again, like in real life everyone does have to work for a living and have to compete. Despite that, you do make friends and I expect it to be the same here. I think I have made a few friends here and you will too!

Ah.

I never thought to compare Steemit friends to "work friends". Of course, the place where I work has a very noncompetitive atmosphere, so the friends I have there are more like regular friends than work friends. *Shrug* Maybe I'm just inexperienced in this arena.

I only have one true friend on here so far but thats only because i know them in the flesh but i think as the platform gets more people coming on and steem is more spread out you will build bigger and better friendships here just a matter of time and you could also invite your friends from other social platforms just my 2cents

Thank you for your comment.

I, too, feel that Steemit will only improve as it grows.

But can you blame me for being a little impatient? So many of my former social media bastions---Twitter, in particular---are going down into the briny blue. We don't have that much time to build our own platform before all the others have been sunk.

But at least I still have a lot of commenters here, even if following people is still a largely undefined exercise.

Interesting post. I think real community takes time - beyond an introduceyourself post. I think at the moment there is still a lot of chaos on the site. As you mentioned, you like Pokemon, writing, food etc. As the site begins to be able to support more niche content you will become more familiar with similar users.
But the format of the posts is inherently one-to-many, similar to youtube posts. The follow features and private messaging (both on the roadmap) should help with this though.

Thanks for your comments.

I'm glad that other people are thinking about these same issues, and even more glad to hear that follows and private messaging are in the pipeline. Where did you hear that?

Also the release notes on github or the steemitblog are good for more official info and the slack channels.

Well, my wife is on here, so I have a real friend from steemit. Real friendships can totally be made from here.

That's great.

I wish I could get my real friends and family on Steemit. But they don't even come to my own website. It's kind of hard to introduce them to anything new.
