Why I Upvote Almost Everyone

in steemit •  7 years ago

If you've been following me for a while, you'll notice something about all of my posts: they get a lot of comments.

And I upvote most of these, even though a lot of them are made by accounts that comment on every post (you know the ones). A lot of these are people who don't even bother to read the post. And some of them are outright bots.

Yet, as long as they upvote my post, I upvote their comments.

And the reason is simple: you make more money that way.

Look, whenever you upvote a "hot" post by a popular author, it's always a craps shoot. You might end up claiming a large curation reward, but it's hardly guaranteed.

But if you are the only person to upvote a comment, well, you get 100% of the curation reward, and even if that reward is relatively small, there may be hundreds of comments to upvote, meaning that your rewards can add up in a big way.

As a general rule, I am the only person upvoting the comments left on my posts, and even though I only collect about 1/4th of the final dollar value of the comment, that value is still big enough to collectively amount to something when I have 20+ comments per post.

And I've noticed that a lot of other Steemit posters don't do this. They prefer to hold back their upvotes, only bestowing them to the best commenters.

What a waste.

And I don't even have that much Steem Power, yet I consistently make about a nickel for every upvote. And, statisically speaking, that's a pretty large amount to be making reliably.

In any case, it's a better system than those people who spam upvote their own comments. Nobody flags you for upvoting other people. In my estimation, it is the best way to exploit the system (and it helps a lot of other people, too).

So that's why I do it. And that's also why I don't mind bot commenters. Heck, some commenters who I originally thought were bots ended up being real people who occasionally have interesting things to say about my posts.

Anyway, that's one of my secrets. Maybe you can learn from it (or not, but I think it's worth a try).

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

Have a great day

Well, now I want to comment just so you upvote me! (Just Kidding)

I've never considered this before and I think I might start trying it (though I have a low SP at the moment and probably won't get much back). I still refuse to upvote begging or spam comments though...

It's just one of the ways to stack Steemit's rules in your favor.

If you don't have a lot of Steem Power, then getting lucky with a hot post by a popular author may be more valuable than upvoting all your comments.

However, another benefit of upvoting commenters is that you tend to rack up your follower count pretty quickly, and this can lead to greater profit on your posts.

I happen to be in a strange situation where I'm a low-end dolphin. Making $.05 per upvote makes a lot of sense for me, as long as I get a lot of comments that I can upvote. Hence my system.

I'll be honest, I'm not holding my breath that I will get anything back in terms of money. I'm just enjoying the community and relationship building. Steemit gives me a chance to hear voices from outside my regular social and professional circles and the relationship building has helped me to find a lot of interesting people!

A censorship-free social media platform will do that, yes.

Lots of comments, lots of upvotes build inspiration to do better. Curation helps both sides well. You described it very well.

@talanhorne,
Dude you understood the use of Upvote! If we hold stake, we want to learn from it!
I do three things to earn from this platform!
#1. Daily posting
#2. Commenting to a set of followers
#3. SP rent and Upvote

1/4 Curation is a good thing! We can earn a lot by using it and all upvote bots also earning by it! Great thinking friend! Wish you a great success as well!

Cheers~

Hello @talanhorne,

Thank friend @talanhorne

Now, now. You have to upvote me first.

I have to have some rules, after all. But since my upvote is likely more valuable than yours, you're getting the bigger end of the stick, anyway.

Great post thank you so much for sharing @talanhorne
