i won’t forget those words from gary vaynerchuk from over a decade ago at one of my favourite times at southby (sxsw) - it was the best year i was awake and alive and so inspired to all the new ways of working that were starting to roll out as companies were desperate to use social media to amplify their products and show that they were social. it was good times, good people, good food and lots of learning.
i won’t forget what gary said to me in this video when he quite obviously knew i was trying it on to get him to see what new geeky gadget i was hyped about getting from one of my brand sponsors at the time. he totally did something that i was not expecting and it was about the recovery that made me realise a lot of things and i’m thankful to gary till this day for showing my error of my ways.
i learned to win at situations like this because i could back it up, because i did the background, i learned the thing, i found the use case. i shifting my thinking from trying to jab too much before i could hook. personally i think it was because i was too loaded on coffee because that person from nine years ago is not the person i see anymore.
it changed my whole thinking about the hype of social media and really about learning the substance of the exchange. no selling, just facts, just application, what it does, how it does it, does it make my life easier, is it cost effective, is it sustainable, does it last. i’ll always consider this little videoblogging moment from one of the power houses in social media with a smile and a grin.
