Well, some inject millions into their accounts and have their first post plastered on top of the trending section. I won't mention a certain c4v3 tr011

And others try to cheat their way up through bots like Utopian, abusing certain efforts by others to get their own undeserved boosts.

I really despise those who reply to a top comment with irrelevant stuff just for attention and its 100% okay to flag those in my opinion.

Self-voting a comment up for the same effect onto others posts is pretty much the same.

I personally don't mind self-upvoting as long as the comments have value. At the end of the day what maters is the quality. I do hate irrelevant comments and repeated spamming. I was really sick of it and after writing an entire post about it, I was checking my own tags and stumbled upon this. Glad to see you guys doing your best to preserve the quality of steemit.

Hmmm, I'm personally unsure about this. I do sometimes self-vote my comment to the top when I see there's 60 more people and I really really have something to say to an author that I know doesn't read every single comment on their thread.

But I've seen some who arrive 8 hours later and just post a few marketing quotes and boop, attention boost.

This is the reason I said I don't mind. Almost anything can be used for good or bad. Bitcoin/Monero does fund assassinations and other crimes. But they can also be used as tools to empower people. It's about the way you use them.

This post is certainly not new but it is gold. Not only on steemit, this applies to all platforms! So many people feel that they are entitled and everybody in this world MUST help them. Don't know where they got that mentality and they are the ones bringing up the future generation too!

100% agreed and you couldnt have said it any better. Just like any other social network platform, noone owes us a view, comment, or like. Just think there could be thousands of people who see this post and not even comment or upvote it. Imagine how many great posts we go through per DAY. Not liking or not commenting doesnt mean the post is worthless. Alot of STEEMIANS need to know that and get down off their makeshift soapbox.

I agree. I can accept relevant comments that say 'by the way, you may be interested in what I'm doing', but just spamming the system will get you flagged. Up voting your own comments is a little arrogant. It's up to the community to decide what behaviour is acceptable

I did not upvote my comment for more than a year, then I realized than I did not used all of my upvotes and I though that those upvotes could be better used to produce renewable energy. I also realized that many whales are upvoting there own comments. By the way, you may be interested in what I am doing.

Given the diversity here on Steemit I'd say it's more important to "build" your audience. For instance, I'm into Hip Hop, so I search the hashtag and interact and get to know the community, then I share and hashtag. Creat initiatives for your Steemit Community and help build each other up. I'm sure everyone thinks they produce great content, and who are we to judge them? Just my thoughts :) Check #recordpool for an initiative we're working on for the music community here!

Just going around dropping random comments where you feel like it because you believe your cause is worthy is no different than me walking into your living room while you are watching Game of Thrones to tell you my son needs heart surgery and we could really use the money to save his life. It's no different than me sending you an email to buy Viagra because you may or may not be a guy that needs it and you happen to be on the Internet.

The concept of audience "ownership" seems to be the piece most often missed here on Steemit. You own the audience you create for yourself. You "own" that audience because you've engaged with it, attracted it with your value. (Not that you own it in the sense you can control it, but in the sense that you've gathered it.) And you're not entitled to the audiences of others because you haven't done that work. But you're pointing it out and others are, too. Hopefully the message will get through eventually.

I can see the long climb I have ahead. Personally it sucks donkey balls. But I am at a crossroads. I did not arrive here by chance. Work to do. Not trying to redefine myself. Just trying to let go of diseased narratives by exploring old wounds from the past. Finding the things that anchor me to the unsuitable and surgically remove them. My job as I move forward is to make sure I do not become a raptor and I will see if the community sees any value in what I post. Ciao for now. More on this later...

Amen to that @themarkymark! It's one of the most important lessons I've learned from marketing:

If you want to EARN more, whether it's money, assets, views, or an audience for that matter, you need to GIVE people a certain amount of value. Could be education, could be a product, could be entertainment, but there's no such thing as something for nothing!

I like your point of view, and I think that this is a common misconception around new Steemians. Many just think that by posting they will get 2000 followers and $100 on each post. This article will orient them in the right direction to adding value to the community and succeeding as a content creator.

lol just now I realized that by liking my own post my worth of liking goes down for other posts. That is a good reason to stop and a great explanation why my likes were not worth anything sometimes while I did not even liked an article yet that day except my own new post. I now 3 months after date, but hey; I agree! :)

I totally agree that you are not owed anything and you have to earn it - My gran always told me "nothing worth anything ever came for free" and boy was she right!! I am now on my second day in the steemit community and will continue to try to engage and be "interested and helpful" as far as I can. Steeming on!!

Sadly, I’ve seen this same trend take place (garbage posts &!comments) on many other paid to post sites. Sadly, the sites could not last as a result. I am confident that Steemit’s platform is different since the community helps separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. Hopefully we are all using our power responsibly.

I feel bad when i take my time to comment on a post and get nothing in return but the fact is i decided to write and nobody asked for it. So I decided to keep writing and commenting for I found joy in doing what i do and not because of the money. This is the similar thing I have been doing on facebook and twitter so what has changed with me doing similar on steemit. Our fate rest in time and our reward comes from God.

" I thought that a 5 lines comment with a ugly logo was a little bit less intrusive. I underestimate how many solicitations whales are receiving.

In 2004, I have studied the Peak Oil problem and I decided to work to promote solar energy. I built a photovoltaic car shelter for the French Institute of Solar energy in 2010.
I experimented how difficult it is to raise money to invest in solar energy.
In 2014, I have discovered Solarcoin and I though that crypto could be a way to do it.
Last year I discovered Steemit and I published many post about solar energy, the economy and the unemployment.
In may 2017 I created the @solarcoach account, which is devoted to solar energy promotion and investment.
I joined VIVAcoin and as a TQ holder, @tradeqwik upvotes all of my posts.
Last August, I created TOPSOL , a bitshares user asset to invest in solar energy.
Last week I discovered @treeplanter project and I get inspired for a new way of communication for @solarcoach.
Marketing is not my best competency and if anyone of you with better competency wants to help me to promote solar energy with better, smarter, more adapted means, you are welcome.

This has been a real issue though. A lot of peeps thinking this is some sort of get rich quick platform so they don't wanna put in work and provide value.

Apart from spamming lots of post with links to personal posts some guys also go as far as begging for upvotes and follows mostly newbies.

It's kinda sad to realize that some people don't see this platform as a community and not more than a place to get paid for upvotes.
