Is incentive structure of steemit is fair? What can you and whales do about it for curating better content?

I don't know much about the where's whales come from , from content creation and curation or buying huge power from open market of steem dollars and powers ? If first case is true then it's fair but in case of second case yes definitely their is an unfair playing field if those power holders don't use the power for right content and use them to make more money or to become more powerful. When you are newbie and trying to search content of your interest you end up up voting content that you don't have interest in (less serious ones in my case) or masala ones because you think that up voting will give you more steem power even voting to garbage contents. Normal people have no patience at all to wait the right content and they want to make quick money by doing anything. In content creation patience is the key and right opportunity will definitely come but problem is no one want to wait. If you open new content section then you will see total crap , people are sharing pictures of hot models, pictures of dogs and cats and memes ,YouTube link of sensational videos, no one want to write few lines which originated in their own mind. it is my advice to all the users that please don't chase the power do the right thing you have interest in and you like such that you can do great discussions on the topic than gossiping about it. Up vote right content by at least reading (even longer ones) or watching about it, that's the only way you can benefit yourself and this portal and I have feelings that this portal can beet other ones in longer terms because of incentive structure but only thing is that if people will value their time worth spending on it and that comes from good content. I request to all whales that please donate a little bit to the good writers such that they can also curate interesting content.

I think the bigger problem is the firehose of plagiarism spam of late. People take public stories and just copy+paste onto Steemit.

The problem is twofold. One, they're benefiting from someone else's work at almost zero effort. Two, it creates a legal risk for Steemit and puts all our Steem and SBD in danger.

Yes you are right and this plagiarism will not allow good content to be trending because after posting less people will Be able to see the post and post become unpopular if not upvoted or promoted by any whale.

That's an interesting point, would be good to know who could be legally held responsible. The platform or the user? Or both?

Steemit is not the first or last website to host a lot of content that is in violation of copyrighted materials, but since every single piece of content is monetized, it could potentially come under more fire at some point.

Unlike Reddit where content is linked to, people directly copy/paste onto Steemit. In countries like the UK where blocking/banning particular domains is actually something the legal system can require an ISP to do, this could cause a huge problem for us.
